  • Here's the breakdown: The MC1R gene controls melanin production. In people with brown, black, or blonde hair, this gene functions normally. In redheads, a mutation in the MC1R gene leads to production of pheomelanin instead of melanin, resulting in red hair and fair skin. This same MC1R gene is somehow linked to pain receptors in the brain. The mutation may affect how these receptors respond to anesthesia. Studies suggest redheads: Need about 20% more general anesthesia for surgery. Are more resistant to local anesthetics like lidocaine. May be more sensitive to certain types of pain (like heat and cold).
