I AM MAXIMUS wins the 2024 Grand National

I Am Maximus was an emphatic winning favourite of the Randox Grand National, storming clear of his rivals to give the all-conquering Willie Mullins a second victory in the Aintree showpiece.
Successful with Hedgehunter 19 years ago, Mullins was responsible for eight of the 32 who headed to post in Liverpool, but I Am Maximus was well-touted to follow up last year’s success in the Irish Grand National.
An impressive tune-up in the Bobbyjo Chase saw punters latch onto the Grade One-winning eight-year-old and Paul Townend rode the 7-1 market leader with supreme confidence down the inner as I Am Maximus showed no sign of previous jumping frailties.
In a race with early drama when defending champion Corach Rambler unshipped Derek Fox at the very first fence, there were a plethora still in contention heading down to two out, where I Am Maximus was inching into contention.
However, the complexion of the race would change at the elbow where I Am Maximus scooted clear of the Rachael Blackmore-ridden Minella Indo and the staying-on Delta Work, who picked up second place in his third attempt at the famous race.
It was a first Grand National triumph for Townend, while owner JP McManus was striking at Aintree for the third time after Don’t Push It (2010) and Minella Times (2021).
Mullins said: “It was an excellent ride. I had said before the race that we didn’t know how good this horse was, today he showed that he’s better than he had been. I thought he still had a little bit from the handicapper after the Bobbyjo and he’s proved it today.
“Paul was excellent, he kidded him round the inside, he got chopped up a couple of times and probably didn’t jump as clean as he could, but he was looking for the gaps and when he eventually got it he was all right.
“I could see Paul’s body language and he was happy, so I was happy then. I don’t think I said anything until he got over the last and then I let go (and gave him a cheer).
“He’s a tremendous horse. He has his own way of doing things, he’s quirky and immature but he’s learning all the time. It’s extraordinary how we came to have him. Nicky Henderson had him before me, Michael Grech moved his horses to Ireland and Nicky said to me ‘make sure you get him’ and it was fine advice. Nicky could see the talent that he had and we just had to nurture it, so thanks to Nicky and also Henrietta Knight who organised all that.
“To win an Irish National and an English National is impressive.
“I think he could be a Gold Cup horse, but we don’t know how good he could be because he doesn’t do it at home. He’s quirky, but he has huge ability and until others get the better of him, we won’t know how good he is.”
First prize in the National is £500,000 - a sum which firmly puts Mullins in the driving seat for the British trainers’ title, with both Ladbrokes and Betfair making the Closutton handler an odds-on shot against Dan Skelton and Paul Nicholls.
Mullins added: “Now we’ve won the National we’ll have to give it a good go, we are there with a chance so we might see you all in Sandown, Perth, Ayr - where is there!
“I’m buzzing here now at the moment and it’s huge. As far as I know our team is back in full order with no injuries or anything and I’m happy that we have a full compliment of horses and riders coming back in.”
A jubilant Townend said: “At halfway he was a bit careful with his jumping, but we just built his confidence back up again and then going over the last two I had the four horses in front of me that I wanted in front of me. I was hoping when I pulled him out that he’d pick up and go and he did.
“This is a special place, you grew up building Grand National fences built out of whatever you could get your hands on. It’s a dream to win it. You build a course and your ponies probably know when it’s National time as you’d have the green fences out! It’s just a race that captures the imagination.
“The feeling passing the line is up there with the best I’ve had, but it’s a different feeling. Grade Ones are extra special and tactical and in the Irish National and English National you need a bit of luck, the feeling winning this is unique.
“It’s a special feeling when they start picking up passing the elbow. You honestly don’t hear any of the noise from the crowd, at that stage you’re in full drive and you’re not thinking of anything other than getting to the lollipop stick (winning post) before something passes you.”

    • Well said. I accept the issues that come with racing because nothing is without risk, especially when you are dealing with a sport that works with half a tonne of animal on little legs. I also understand how well these animal athletes are looked after. By the way, I accept the risk to jockeys too, because as much as we accept horses falling, we should remember jockeys are injured too, sometimes in ways that change their lives. All that said, no one wants to see horses injuring themselves or worse if it can be prevented. Nothing will eliminate all risk, but I think if obvious risks can be reduced it’s better. We live in a world where the ‘ban it and abolish it’ crew have a lot to say, and each time horses die in the National their voices get louder. They conveniently forget other race meetings and other sports where there is risk to people as well as animals. I think if the National is to survive it has to move on and adapt. In the 19th century one of the fences was a brick wall. That doesn’t exist now and the race survives. I bet people said then the race was being changed too much too, but if we want to keep the spectacle of the National, man and beast working together to try to win the ultimate contest, it must evolve, or the race will go and the snowflakes in society will have won and they won’t consider what happens to those incredible animals, bred to race and win.

Its Still a unique course, the reduced Field Meant that riders spread out more, there were a lot of Horses made mistakes but with more room jockeys adjusted better. And the Chair took its toll through the Meeting. The winner I am Maximus and 2022 winner Noble yeats made mistakes at second bechers, but its a Safer fence now. We have to ask ourselves in the 21st century, do We really want to See loads of fallings, injuries and fatalities ?? I hope thats it now with Modifications. It was a Good race, still unique obstacles nice amount of Finishers and no casualties. Well done Aintree

Of course it is safer now for the horses, but let’s stop pretending it is the same race we all used to love and get excited for. Half the battle used to be could you get round without falling. That edge is almost gone now. RIP Grand National.

Should humans stop eating meat ?….I’m not sure what has been done to make things safer for the ones we eat. Just another example of the extreme minority, and it is a minority, being allowed to get their way. I find it astonishing how weak the people in charge are, in all aspects of life these days it seems, that they pander to the whims of the minority. The minority would happily takes us back to the stone age if they could. But then there would be no tv, no phone, no internet, no ANYTHING we are used to. If several horses had died in the national today then people instead of saying its boring would be calling for it to be banned instead. Its a fine line.it had to change because of the horse deaths in the last 3 races people don't have to watch it if they think it's boring. No one is forcing them .I don't think the national will be banned because of the money tied up.in racing. This is all about money .I think the way people think about horses is like they do with dogs. They are seen as companions and held in affection.not like cows and pigs sheep .I'm sure a horse belonging to you died on the race course you would be in bits over it. But because its someone else's its makes it easier to watch. • Ah how can English trainers expect to win big races in Cheltenham or antry if you don't enter them. They might as well move all their best races over to Ireland. I'm actually Irish myself and I have to say that if our trainers keep winning the big races in England irish as well as English punters will loose intrest in your racing because the element that made Cheltenham espically fun is gone out of it the good humoured competition between the race goers. I only looked at afew Cheltenham races myself this year and the Irish roar is even gone out of it.

    • Well said. you have articulated it very well. There were no fallers and some really decent horses were in with a chance of winning. If there had not been the historical modications, I feel the GN would have been banned. Anyone who doubts me, please look again at the 1987 horrific fall of Dark Ivy just to name one; there were many more including two Gold Cup winner. So they all jumped Bechers yesterday - bloody good job too. Wonderful sight to see bold jumping horses sail over what used to be a nasty, trappy and very dangerous jump that caught out some quality horses over the years and ended their lives - we owe them more than that, so I am very pleased it was a safer race. "I am Maximus" is very classy horse , and next year he is being aimed the Gd Cup.

      @BertSmithLondon@BertSmithLondon24 күн бұрын
    • @@BertSmithLondon I don’t see The Chair as being like a hurdle;,it is still a very formidable fence. The most signifiant change is to Bechers. That huge drop has gone and also the ditch has been filled in; it was a horrible death trap if a horse and jockey misjudged it: remember Alverton? If anything Valentine’s is the bigger jump. Another good thing is no fallers means good horses are not brought down and often badly injured.

  • In Hindsight, I agree with Ruby Walsh, it was Enjoyable, still the most testing with the distance and the different style of Fencing. It is far less Dangerous than Yesteryear, but that was inevitable. Hopefully They will leave it alone now. A lot of the Atmosphere went when Security meant no crowds at Bechers to Canal Turn and the Four Following Fences, but Sadly it was Animal righters and Bomb Scares that made this Neccesary. One Thing tho I Think They should bring back the four reserves System, now theres a maximum 34 runners late withdrawals could cut the Field too much, only 32 ran this Year. The Fences Seemed the Same as last Year, the Smaller Field and the riders Fanning accross the width of the course was the main reason there were fewer casualties. It is still a unique race tho.

  • Welcome to the Animal Rights Grand National. Zero fallers, 4 unseated, 7 pulled up, and the remaining 21 runners all huddled together as they turned into the home straight. An inevitable consequence of the horses getting stronger while the fences are being made easier for them to jump. Nothing special about this race anymore, so it's the last one I'll be watching.
