I don't think it would be very effective in actual combat. It doesn't have the stomping power of a mace, and it's not a bladed weapon either. If the swordsman can mitigate the power of the blow even a tiny bit, then they can just tank it and go in for the kill. That's if we're talking a duel, but of course in war a three segmented staff like this would be even more useless. I'm convinced this only works for exhibition play-fighting.

The wrap around is what makes any flail type weapon deadly, it one of the advantages against swordsman even with a shield, the flail end can wrap around and hit around a shield, so when parrying or blocking, you must do so at the chain (that is if it the end piece isn't long enough to reach you, and you must not block it the same way you could block a strike from a sword, in the case of nuchucks, but with a block it would still hit your arm as it goes around) but if in the case of fighting against a three section staff like this, you can't block it at either chain, you will get hit blocking it, you must parry, dodge or duck out of the way or block it right at the end piece, but you must keep every part of your body out of the path it is swung or you will get hit This is difficult to say the least if you are unused to fighting someone with it, a three section staff has excellent reach like a spear, can execute straight strikes as well and effective at close or long range, so against a skilled fighter, don't even think about 'Closing the distance' as you would with other melee weapons, but as with any weapon the best way to train to fight and defend against it is to train to use it; the best way to get a feel for the range and capabilities of any weapon: sword, flail, dagger or firearm is by knowing how to use it, and being familiar of its capabilities

I was thinking the same thing. I can't help but think if the swordsman had accepted absorbing the hits with his shield and drove forwards with confidence he would have been more effective.

He just need roman`s shield and helmet and he easy block 99% attack of this triple nunchaku or shorter shield+spear to block and conter attack immediately...

They are probably operating under the assmuption that getting hit with one would be detrimental to your health.

It is easier said than done, when encounter this 3 sections pole, I assume the opponent is quite confused where to strike. The pole can strike either left or right, shot or long range, while the middle section is very good at defending. Any attack can be fend off by simple push. In fact, the guy with this 3 sections pole is not even a skill user, but still, he already inflict quite a lot of damage to the opponent. Very interesting drill indeed! give us a good view point of what a true fight is about. I will say, when I have to encounter a guy with 3 sections pole. Fight in a confine space may be the best way or with a long spear.

watch a movie called 36 chambers of shaolin. its about the invention of the tri form staff in china. in japan it was typically to my understanding shorter, and the "flail" should be tetsubo.

also it is basically a heavy quarter staff vs. a buckler/medium size shield; just hammer it and you will fck up the hand and arm underneath in like 3-4 hits, which if he is so defensive is only a couple of seconds... if he is this afraid all you need to do is just hammer him until he breaks (and he will pretty fast, like 1-2 hit connecting from distance to a limb and its basically over, else within 8-10 hits you've done so much blunt impact dmg the fight is also over.^^

And moving in reduces the staff’s usefulness a fair bit, a big part of the advantage is the space it can create along with the amount of range it’s got. Just gotta get whacked real good once to get a stab lol- 1:16 is a good example

Honestly capturing it to disarm would probably work best. The range on that weapon is real, and this was obviously point sparring. of course the sword is more lethal than a stick, but this wasn't a gladiator match.

having said that edged weapons need almost perfect edge alignment in order to cut (especially thin blades), which is not the case for blunt weapons because they're not edged weapons lol.

honestly, all I was thinking while watching this is "Looks hard to block, I'm gonna take one hit of that on purpose and bullrush inside their reach" this feels like they really let the person freely display what the 3 staff can di rather than actually try and stop them

In training.. sure the guy 'should' rush. I'm going to play devil's advocate here and explain. So the three section staff outside of training would be made of more dangerous material. The guy training against the staff may grow used to just protecting his head and rushing forward- ignoring the blows to his legs and body. Now when that same fighter tries this out of training he will have his sternum, ribs, and legs broken because he did not respect the danger of the sectioned staff posed.

@@lelouchlamperouge5910 It's really not like a whip, I know theres alot of people claiming you can't break bones with nunchuk which you most certainly can, a sectioned staff would have even more power than that. What's worse you don't think a whip can break bones lool. Whips that were meant to kill had weights on the end of them... Which in skilled hands could break the sound barrier, and your face and skull or whatever else it happened to hit. Whips with weights were essentially a bullet on a string- saying they can't break bones is foolish.

@@kcwliew technically yes but in the video he doesn't seem to do that. And if you think about how you swing a stick, if you want power it's not just a case of rotation, you move the stick in an ark using your whole upper body, like a baseball bat almost. I'm only speculating here but I would imagine having that bar in the middle makes it difficult to get any real power when swinging the end sticks on their own. However, one thing I didn't consider in my original comment was that you could 'fold' one of the end sticks over the middle one and just use it as a 2 section staff. This would be a bit cumbersome but would enable you to shorten your swing radius for closer ranges, but still give you respectable power on the swing. I would love to have a play with something like this as regardless of the criticisms it looks fun to use and I bet if you tested it on a dummy, a full swing from this would be strong enough to practically remove the face from the skull.

It was tried several times in this video. The staff-user can step back just as the swordsman steps in. It's a really uphill fight for a sword to have to cover that much ground just to get into attack range. A blunt weapon would honestly have more ease.

@@kinn11 therein lies the problem yeah. But I wonder how much force it has in that scenario. But it's the same issue as always with modern fights like this. They play to the first touch, whereas in reality all touches aren't equal, especially with a blunted weapon. Sometimes combat, like chess requires you to sacrifice a lesser hit so you can inflict a greater one. This argument has been made many times in other videos for sure and never resolved.

Depending on the system you train it can be used many ways the end of the staff can be used to block and attack or you can swing it around your body to block and attack or close one end of stick and use it like a nun chuck or close all 3 and hit with it

I personally wouldn't call that impressive or practical. Not trying to be "that guy" at all, but his movements were WAY too slow and he was missing catching it. A few aggressive, fast lunges would ruin him as an air breather.

It's a shorter than a polearm but has several big advantages: 1). It's unpredictable to people unaccustomed to facing it. With polearm, you know how it'll move and what will happen if you block it a certain way; with this thing, most people probably don't. 2). It can wrap around a weapon or a shield, so distance, not parrying, is the best defense. 3). If an opponent closes the distance, the weapon can be used almost like two batons to block and strike back, as opposed to a polearm that has limited close-range mobility.

@@OceanHedgehog They can be parried, although they way that you parry flail-type weapons differs significantly compared to most weapons. Rather than blocking as far out as possible as against most weapons, the chain/rope and weight will wrap around with a flail from the sudden stop. Rather, you want to block either very far down (angling it such that the haft extends too far away to wrap around and hit your, or hit you hard enough), or at the base of the tethered weight (to break the stability and inertia and to make it unable to reach you by the angle). Or, such applies to single-articulated flails. This thing probably differs a bit, although I am sure a more complicated version of the same principles apply. That said, yeah, these things are nigh-impossible to defend against if you do not understand _how_ to, and as they were always relatively uncommon, that understanding was fairly rare.

Only works if your opponent is at a distance, not to mention they are sparring. In a real situation a professional would take a glancing blow to get in close and it would be over.

@@Uouttooo There was a Discovery Channel show YEARS back that test the damage output on weapons and one of them was a Nunchaku. The readings IIRC from the Nunchaku was that it was far less than what most people thought. Sure I bet it would definitely hurt against an unarmored opponent...but on a battlefield where most opponents in the past wore armor and at least a helmet...I dont think that is the kind of weapon you want to bring with you. Its not going to be enough to stop a determined armored swordsman to rush in and stab you.

Exactly. It would be a different story if that sword was sharp. With dummy swords the nunchucks are scarier but IRL I think he would be a lot more cautious and lose the advantage.

@@timothyboland2629 the main issue I have with the staff is the adrenaline. If the dude with the sword is pumping adrenaline, how many of those strikes would it take? That thing unleashed a lot of strikes, and there would be more under his adrenaline. That sword was made for stabbing, and all it would take is one stab. This is one of the best fights they've put out.

@PJ Rivera you're right. The staff needs to be made of something that can break bone, which would remove speed. If it was steel, it could break an ankle, but the whole staff would be too heavy to fight with. A hit to the wrist, with a steel one, could break the wrist. A real fight between these 2 weapons would be like that trans woman fighting the cage fighter.

This is one of the answer to your attack suggestion 0:51 and it can be done in multiple directions, the staff doesn't need momentum if you know how to use it with footsies, it's just slower than nunchuck but hits harder and does not ricochet back at you badly unlike the unreliable nunchucks. Also the rapid twirling can change direction upon hit, it's an attacking feint to zero in on reactions. All twirling attacks with weapons are meant to make the ignorant think "all show and can't work" so you can make them sucker no.1... Assuming you know the dirty tricks of what weapon twirling is for that is.

Maybe... but none of them would kill you. The sword on the other hand... far more lethal. I'd prefer spear or heck, even a knife. I can take a good whack, I just need to get up close and end the fight.

What do you think happens when you 'rush in' to someone who knows that they need to leverage their range? Do you think they'll just stand there?

@@frankwashburn6680 how would they avoid being charged at and stabbed tho? Idk anything about this type of stuff but I can't really think of any scenario where he'd get a hit deadly enough to incapacitate the sword fella before getting stabbed

the lethality of the blows is irrelevant in a fight, only stopping power matters. and those cracks over the head would stop someone for sure, even in armor, as blunt trauma to the helmet was the most common way of dealing with heavy armor. to be honest, if you tell me i have to fight a guy in full plate id rather go for a staff than a sword (not a sectioned staff, though, to high a skill gap)

@@pyramid_scheme_termination3655 not necessarily against an an opponent with a helmet, which was OP's point. but as I said, that is irrelevant because even the normal wood variation would cause trauma to the head from a helmet impact, probably a severe concussion. additionally, if the staff was made out of steel it would weigh significantly more than is acceptable for wieldiness.

Most weapon based systems from around the world reward aggression. Simply because you absolutely cannot get hit, so whoever takes the initiative is by default in control of the fight. The Germans call this "seizing the vor", and venetian rapier master nicoletto giganti refers to it with his concept of obeyance, or the idea of forcing your opponent to commit to certain defensive actions that you can exploit.

@@sorendk1 There are defensive styles in armed combat too and if the deffender is skilled enough he can provoke some action from his opponent to let him reveal his intent and break it by better timing, but when the attack is strong and technically good and it is sophisticated technique - covering attack like "master cuts" then you can still lose if you are defending, unless you are superior at judging distance.

He maybe scared, but you seem unaware that you planned tactic is not nearly as effective as you indicated. While better than staying out of sword range and just getting hit, the slow lazy arcs are a trap. Trying to charge in was done in the clip early and resulted in getting hit.

@@ehisey Thing is, with a weapon like this getting hit isn't a death sentence usually, and getting in quickly also mitigates the hit. If you're at the range where they'll strike using the full reach of the weapon, quickly darting in and taking the hit further down the weapon means much less damage. And because they committed to a full reach strike, you're going to be able to land a quick but likely fatal blow before they can really do anything. The weapon may be good in both close range and further away, but you can't instantly transition from a finishing/just finished full reach strike to a proper close range attack that's going to successfully stop the stabby man in time. It's a similar principle to defending against a roundhouse kick in unarmed combat, you rush in and grab/block the leg close to the body because the force is much weaker there and then counter while they're still committed. Obviously the parallels aren't exact. And the counterplay to that is to not overextend, which makes it harder to get a good opportunity to push in, but there's two problems there. One, that pulls back a lot on your reach advantage, since you aren't using the full force of that reach due to its exploitability. Two, this guy doesn't do that. There are multiple times where he makes a big long swing that is telegraphed enough to easily make that rush in, even early in the clip. The other guy just doesn't capitalize at all.

@@jonathanrussell8998 You dont seem to realize that getting in close is not getting hit by a lesser part of the weapon. it is designed to be hit with just the near section at full power. From actual first hand experience fighting with and against this weapon, you can very quickly swap from long to short, as the typical long strike is only the middle (which is held) and the end section. This makes extremely fast to swap to the near end for defense. When used to strike at the full 3 length distance it is 9 feet, which is very hard to close faster than the wielder can recover.

Yes. In reality i think Thats why a variation of that thing Was a farming implement and not a weapon. It was rather what farmers used to whack their harwested produce to separate it from the hausks etc. So they had it in hand and could use it for self defence.

Very high skill cap. I feel like the video doesn’t even explore the potential for a more ambidextrous approach. They’re always leading with right hand to strike. I imagine a more skilled practitioner could be spinning around more and able to strike with counter clockwise left handed attacks as well.

Effective against who? Compared to what? Just saying, swords are much more versatile because they have solid form and a bladed edge. Hell, you can get more versatility and force out of a staff of the same material. I'm not denying the pain the weapon can inflict or the skill of the user, I just doubt it would be nearly as effective as most other weapons.

The fact that he leads with the shield and tucks his head like he's afraid to get hit instead of moving his shield and sword at the same time tell me he doesn't do a lot of shield/sword training. The staff is a neat weapon, but I'd like to see it up against a much more competent opponent wielding more conventional weapons.

You also gotta keep in mind they're not in a real fight and how much energy you'd have to put in wielding one weapon or the other. The three-section staff requires a lot more energy to be wield than a sword. Specially if you're trying to actually hurt your opponent.

I mean, this is "martial arts", with emphasis on the arts. Kendo, Fencing, etc are not about realizing or effective combat. In a real fight somebody with a knife and armor could just jump at this whimsy staff, get him on the ground, and start stabbing wildly with the knife. This staff thing is only useful if the target wears no armor. Take a bunch of strings, and then a strong fan, and you have the ultimate weapons when it comes to these kinds of "martial arts". Long range, and no way to avoid all of the strings. No way it'd be lethal, but "a hit is a hit".

@@muuubiee I wonder if armor is really needed. I train in escrima. In the beginning your really scared to get hit. After years of training you get hit a lot. Anyway I wonder how hard most shots really are. I'm sure some would stop you but many look very light. Just a thought

I doubt it would be an effective weapon in self defense, or in battlefield situations, flails are everything this thing wants to be. In a competition though, smart.

I like how in 36 chambers he uses the two end sections as sticks also. Super versatile weapon. When you pull the two ends the chain does get very tight and is solid for blocking glancing blows but it would not be viable for something with more mass. Like all weapons there are weaknesses to it, like the chain is on this one. I have been using the 3 sectional staff for a little over 20 years now. I love it and this person is really skilled with it. I have never attempted to do any sparring outside of the kung fu two man sets tho. Bravo for making this work.

In real life, with two people who have the same level of training, the person wielding a staff (stick without a blade) would die every time. Hits by a unsharpened stick (staff) may cause pain but the bladed stick (sword) causes life threatening damage every single time it strikes.

Bludgeon weapons are miles better than a blade against a heavy/plate armored opponent. Asides from later can-openers, a hammer can seriously daze or cause internal injury on a hit - and that's the most you can hope for to incapacitate or disable such an opponent. After all, the extra metal only adds to the ringing as it hits.

Maybe because it is a blunt weapon? If you compare it to a bladed weapon well it works kinda differently.. but I dont think it makes the blunt weapon 'ineffective'. If you use such method of comparison, sword would be ineffective against guns and bombs.

Careful getting close to this weapon. It is a pretty effective short range and grappling tool also. Long range is 6 to 9 ft, mid range is 3 to 6, and 0 to 3 is the grapple to short distance, so it is a bit of a pikc your poison and figure out which range is the wielders worst.

@@ehisey grappling someone with a dagger or even a sword while trying to maintain your grip on a 2 handed striking weapon sounds like straight suicide. I would be shocked if any of the close range strikes were debilitating. Painful, sure, but not debilitating. The challenge for the swordsman is to get inside without a broken skull, leg, or sword arm from those nasty long range shots. That’s a genuinely daunting prospect, but if they get Inside then it’s over.

@@b_t_s8792 lets start with it assumption it is only a 2 handed weapon, works well one handed. As to grappling it has several chokes and bars. Typically it use chain not rope and can generate enough vice force to crack bone. Against a sword sheild combo ot is a better grappling tool. A knife do to smaller size is superior in a grapple but then is also superior to a sword in a grapple.
