  • Just before I arrived at Newport News, the shipyard statue was donated to the Martine Museum because the new owner did not like the inscription: "We build good ships at a profit if we can, at a loss if we must, but always good ships". Not sure if that is exact words, but close. Newport News had been bought by Tenneco Corporation. Great four years there working projects across the yard.

I worked in a shipyard that built these almost 50 years ago. Both my brother and brother in law served on submarines and I got to go on my brothers when it was in port overseas where I was deployed in the military.

Pounds per square inch. I lived three hundred yards from the shipyard as a child, my father was one of craftsmen who helped construct the first nuke boat, SSN 571 the USS Nautilus.
