If anyone is curious why people always said to fully charge older phones then allow them to discharge fully before charging again, here’s why: older NiCad batteries suffered from something called the “Memory Effect”. When Nickel Cadmium cells are only partially discharged on a regular basis, they eventually almost seem to “remember” the level that they’re regularly discharged to. When that happens those batteries will only discharge to that level. This is why your old cell phone went from having a fine battery one day, to losing power and shutting off at like 30%. Then it gets worse and worse until eventually you plug your phone in and it seemingly jumps right to 100%, then almost immediately after you unplug, it jumps right down to 30%, then shuts off. Li-ion batteries do not suffer from this and so it isn’t important that you discharge fully before charging all the way back to 100%. That being said, as the guy in the video stated, your modern batteries still have a limited shelf life and that life will usually be rated in charge cycles. Though typically a modern lithium ion battery will usually be fairly reliable for a few years. You’ll know your battery is done when it just no longer holds a charge and the battery percentage drops very quickly after you unplug your charger. Anyway, nobody read all this but I like trying to teach.

My battery health is at 47% but it’s waaay too expensive to get it replaced. So I just carry around a power bank and charge it whenever. And until I can afford a new phone, I’m fine. Edit: it costs £76.44 GBP ($104.14 USD) for me to have it changed through Apple. Personally, I wouldn’t have it changed through any other option, which I realise is much more expensive to stick with. But this is what I do, for others, I get that a cheaper option may be better. Yes, around £80 isn’t a ton of money, but I am in a situation where spending that much money just isn’t worth it compared to the £20 I spent buying a powerbank. Charging it overnight will not "overcharge" your battery, but it does lead to an entirely different problem. See, when you leave it charged, you are essentially leaving it at 100% for extended period of time, as the charger will continue to top off the battery. This is bad for the li-ion battery, as the distribution electrolytes are not balanced when it's either fully charge and fully discharged. This can cause the battery to degrade faster. This is also the reason why smartphones are shipped with the battery charged at 50%.

There are so many myths out there about batteries... You can charge your phone whenever you want and for as short or as long as you want. The phone is intelligent enough to manage the charging on its own and since theres no memory effect on Li-Ion Batteries, you also can recharge them even if you still are at 50 or higher withput hurting them!
I still dont trust my phone. After years of past experiences i still found that leaving it plugged in tends to ruin the battery capacity.
I think you need to do some more research. Lithium ion batteries don't like being overcharged or fully discharged, especially for long periods of time. The optimum percentage for a battery charge is 50 percent and the closer you can keep it to this percentage for longer, the longer the overall lifespan of the battery. Just because the phone is intelligently designed to handle harsh usage doesn't mean one should go and advocate for people to 'charge it as much as they want'.
@@staidey5994 ur literally the one who needs to do research. The worst and most high pressure state a battery can be in is 100% and 0%. 50% is in the middle and balanced so if you keep your battery as close to 50% as you can then the battery lifespan will be much longer. Even keeping it at 80% instead of 100% will improve the battery health overtime
@@sebastiaodeabreu7297 It never charges to real 100 and never drains to 0. You cant overcharge a battery in a phone as it stops when it is full and starts again once it has dropped to 95%. What you say is true but the effect isnt that big anymore and I charged every phone I ever had overnight and never had problems...
Warzone
Any respectable electronic gadget that uses a lithium ion battery will have over current/over voltage protection built in. Leaving your phone charging all the time can wear out a battery because it’s not being used and constantly topping off a battery (never really letting it get below 70% or lower) is actually detrimental since the cells inside don’t get “worked” and crystallization can appear on the plates. This is why it’s good to actually let your phone die (discharge till it shuts off) and then charge it uninterrupted for at least 12 hours, at least once a week, or once every other week. Getting it down to about 30% is good too. It’s flexing most of the battery at this point.
This is a joke right?
@@ThunderstormG Nope. That's state of the "art"
I agree. I'm working in a lithium Ion manufacturing process and overcharging for lithium ion batteries cannot harm the cell itself as much as it was the case for older batteries. But still: if cells do not get used in a while (because the capacity is all the time above 50% or even higher) then those cells can crystallize which will harm the batteries capacity after all. So yeah overcharging is not as much as a problem anymore but it's better to avoid it.
This is the worst advice I've ever seen. What the fuck mate?
Damn... I do that all the time. Never knew it was good for the battery. I'm just always draining the power watching stuff before I forget to plug it in and fall asleep! X3

Yeah you did better than me. Only learned the other day to do this. I have a S9+ and it only holds 68%. Im only charging to 80% now to preserve what I have left
@@Andrew-fr1tp My man, battery degredation happens on an exponential slope. The more degraded the battery is, the more effort and power is required to reach the appropriate voltage the SOC requires. If the battery degrades below 2/3rds of the max capacity (66%) the battery may not be able to deliver max voltage to the SOC anymore, actively reducing performance and emitting more waste heat in the process. iPhones, for Apple's part, recommend replacement at 80% of max capacity. Your battery already needs replacement. On the bright side, there's a fantastic app called AccuBattery for Android that allows you to check and measure battery wear over time.
@@davidmalkowski7850 charging limit options really should be an included feature. You can do it on a rooted phone, I think.
@@admthrawnuru It should, but it isn't. The reason is simple: With the rest of the components in a smartphone, most are actually very much overbuilt especially for light users. The next most wear vulnerable component on a phone is storage, but if you keep your storage less than 90% full it heavily reduces wear on storage. The battery wearing out and giving users slower performance is a very important part of the anticipated two year planned obsolescence cycle.

"unlike from years and years and years ago we don't have nickel batteries anymore" If you're talking about those nickel metal hydride batteries that people use as rechargeable AA for example the play in charge kit that does not come with an Xbox controller :( then yeah those are still around
@@staidey5994 yeah cordless phones.
How to don't Charge your Phone overnight If you need it in the morning (for example for school)
"get a new battery", lol
My phone always waits until 5:00AM to charge fully, which is nice.
My android phone automaticaly stops charging when it reaches 100%, no sweat.
i’m pretty sure it’s the same with apple, any lithium ion battery stops charging at 100%
@@accuratemrstuff3842 with apples optimized charging it charges to 80% then the remaining 20% before you wake up
@@JO-ih7uc ah yea i saw that but i have it disabled just because i don’t have a sleep schedule and my phone would be confused asf
that has to do w the lithium battery not ur os.
@@Leon.27.06 well by default lithium batteries will stop charging at 100% but on a recent iOS update they added “optimized charging” which will make it so it’ll stop charging at 80 percent and then continue charging based off of your sleep schedule
The guy makes sarcastic tone and makes air quotes while saying "smart" phone. Then same guy says the battery command is probably smarter than us. He's sardonic to both machine and man, and now I'm confused.
He’s not human, that’s why he’s that way to both machines and us
Damn that's pretty good
"probably powerful than human brain" Bruh human brain makes more than a billion calculations per second
Calculations yeah lol. Human brains complex neuro structure, agreed. Calculations? By definition no.
@@w1z4rd9 oof.. How do you think the chemical balance is maintained throughout the body👀 And your thoughts.. What to forget what not.. Blood composition levels..
@@xx1its___me1xx14 Again, neurotransmitter sending signals and our body doing it's job. By how you state billion, I do think it's general to assume it as arthemetical.
And for further discussion you should reply strongly base on the definition of calculating on this one if I may ask.
So annoying when old ppl try to tell me not to leave my phone charging and to only charge it to 80% and to never let it die. 😑
"Probably smarter than us" Using this in your argument does not inspire much confidence Neither does the fact that those types of featured would need to be programmed into the phone and there would have to be some way for the phone to stop itself from receiving charge, breaking the complete circuit somehow.
The chip that interrupts and controls charge is called a "PMIC", or power management IC. It's typically also responsible for the regulators that supply low voltage to your phone's CPU and RAM. It's certainly not smarter than you, but it pays a lot more attention than you do to the charging of the battery.
Ok story time so I got a new iPhone and every night I would put my iPhone on charge but it was already at 100% but at the time I didn’t know about battery health bc I was new to Apple so few months later I find out about battery health and it’s at 96% and it works great!
@Pablo Vill how so i have old android devices and i charge them like ALL THE TIME even if there at 100% there still on charge and the battery inside it is fine so its gotta be just apple
They expect us all to have cars with these batteries! Imagine how expensive it will be to buy a new battery every 2 years!
2 Years Apple Reckons, hmm... checks warranty and of course it's 2 fuckin years.
My phone takes about 30 seconds to charge 1% and lasts me for the rest of the day on full use, I don't have a problem with that

Having owned an XS since December 2018 I can confidently say my battery is fine even with 8-11 hour use per day. My battery is still at 87%, Thanks Apple!
Yep, I got a iPhone 11 December 2019 and I’m at 85%
Fun fact, Apple lied about “2 years for 80%” 😢 they said it to let people feel as if they need to change their phone in 2 years time. But it actually really depends on how much you use your phone. For me I use it a lot for studies so it’s down to 94% max capacity.
Damn, that's crazy. Still gonna charge though.
I’ve had my se for like 6 months and it’s already at 92%😩✋
se 2020?
@@yootyler yup
If you use it while charging you need to stop. I don’t use my phone now while charging but there was a time when my maximum capacity was at 98% beacuse I was using it while charging. Now it’s at 97%. You need to be really careful. I had an SE 2020 for 9 months and after 9 months I got 97%
@@Maciek2846 my se is at 99% after 7-8 even though I am a heavy user and constantly keep charging my phone.
@@Riyozsu do you use it while charging? Also I’m now not really sure if what I said is true.
this applies to literally any smart phone ever, or device with lithium-ion batteries, not just iphones.
Shhhh
What about Lithium-polymer batteries?
Short answer: YES, yes you can
When you wanna ride Phone Gurus rise up...
Imagine not being able to do this? Imagine how stressful life would be? Wakes up in the middle of the night OMG ITS FULLY CHARGED LET ME TAKE IT OFF. Then go back to bed? Cmon apple wouldn’t make it that hard.
What abou the iPhone 7 I feel like that’s a controversial area whether it’s old or new
You are going to need to replace the phone anyways in a couple of years.
I am pretty sure they have overcharge protection as well. That being said though, if you’re nervous about it, Apple does offer a $49 battery replacement for that device I believe.
as you said, it won’t damage the battery, but it’s going to lower its condition faster for sure.
That moment you run up stairs and find your old Nokia that’s been sitting for 15+ years and it still isn’t dead
Bad advice by a young man with little knowledge or understanding. First charge is best to be to 100%. (Avoid memory effect) The battery does not communicate with the phone, any more than the moon is communicating with you (maybe it IS, because you are special, right?) Battery has B+, ground and temperature sense, a pin connected to a thermistor (temperature dependent resistor), a completely passive device. The charging system can manage anything except a dolt refusing to fully charge the battery new after shipment to the end user (the dolt). The phone smarts periodically reads the thermistor resistance and compares this to the initial (cold) reading. Once the battery is full, extra energy into the cell is dissipated as heat. The temperature rise is noticed by the system and the charging circuit is broken by turning off a mosfet.
Am I the only one who thought it would be perfectly fine to charge your phone overnight and have been doing it for years
*Can I leave my phone PLAYING video all night long, every night, whilst it’s charging and while I sleep.* Yes, you can.
