When my son was about 8, we went to wild life park with a wolf enclosure. Some wolves were inside the kennels and some were outside. All was quiet until my son decided to howl to the wolves and to my surprise all the wolves both in the kennels and outside started howling back to him. I don’t know what they were saying but somehow my son started a conversation they were interested in.
I used to do that all the time with the wolves and the wildlife sanctuary in my area
well a howl is like an introduction - with pups they howl at anyone to just learn how to and to tell the adults where they are so they share something they have hunted established wolf packs might howl to communicate their position, so your son howling and them not recognizing his voice would probably have gotten the response of "we are like 8 wolves here, this territory is claimed" to make sure he doesn't settle down there because encountering another wolf/wolf pack during feeding would mean they'd need to fight over the food and thats stressful and potentiall dangerous so they uuuuusually try to avoid that or they were just like "this is who we are if you recognize our voices, we are not your parents, probably"

I've been to a few wolf sanctuaries and I remember at one of them I got to experience one of these "check-in" howls, as I dubbed it. Considering that the pack that started it was from a further enclosure that didn't really get a lot of foot traffic, and that it cycled all through the entire sanctuary, it really felt like one of those "hey y'all, it's midday, we all still here?" howls, since each pack would start howling, kind of in turn. I don't know if it was a pattern that had formed over the years or what, but it seemed like one pack would start and then there was an order to which pack went next. Since this was a wolfdog sanctuary, the enclosure with new arrivals were participating with what I could only describe as "am I doing this right?" howls that were more a mixture of barks and yelps, no consistent howl like seen here. I also noticed that, while most of the participants were throwing their heads up in the air, one of the ambassador wolfdogs (who, according to her bio, had the lowest amount of "wolf" in her) was pointing her head directly at the enclosure with the newbies that were trying their best. It was really sweet, like she was making sure they were included :3
The pattern is an emergent effect of the collective subconscious of all the animals participating. Kind of like how you can measure the beats of music, you just feel it and know its right. Or like how when you wanna make a loud and uncomfortable utterance in public, but don't feel like you should. Its the intelligence of the body, it remembers things. That's my reasoning.

Storytime: as a kid we were camping at a resort, like 500 sites and hella activities, so basically busy af almost glamping spot. One night some dude howled and a bunch of people howled back, was a good 2-3 minutes of howling back and forth from differnt sections of the mountain. Well some party pooper aggressively yelled for everyone to stfu. Which prompted most of the original howlers and soooooo many more to go extra hard/long for at least another like half an hour. Hearing small groups of humans bonding turn into hundreds howling with a purpose at the angry man was something I'll never forget. Wolf packs have powerful howls but so do hundreds of defiant campers who dont like mean people trying to bully others out of communing with nature and others.

I'v owned a Staffordshire bull terrier & three Pitbulls. They all came out with the funniest sounds I'v ever heard from dogs. From sounding like a strangled cat to almost singing words with jaw movements. They gave me some of the best gut busting laughs, & they knew it made me happy. I loved them with all my heart. None of my pitties howl, but I've heard some weird noises out of shelter pups. My favorite was a mastiff mix. One of the shepherd mixes heard a siren and went off on an "awooh", and all the sudden the bullmastiff 2 kennels down made this... honk. Like a semitruck horn or a boat horn, and it just. got. longer.

@@oiseau_libre She'll grow up knowing barely any fairy tales, tell her them stories and just tell her that wolves aren't actually like that just sometimes they can be a danger. Doesn't taketh magic completely away.

@@oiseau_libre Wolves are wild animals though. Wild animals *can* be dangerous. You can usually minimize the risk somewhat if you respect the danger wild animals can pose, though. That's what I'd teach my child, anyways.
