The biggest electoral year in history: Will democracy survive 2024? | DW News

2024 is the biggest electoral year in history, with people heading to the polls in dozens of countries. This is DW’s preview to the most consequential elections of 2024 across Asia, Africa, Europe and the Americas - and what they mean for the health and future of democracy. Correspondent Rosie Birchard speaks to DW experts on Taiwan, India, South Africa, Mexico, the EU and the US.
#elections #democracy #voting
Chapters:
00:00 A battle of the system: Democratization once seemed unstoppable - but now authoritarianism is on the rise. Will 2024 be the year democracy gets a vote of confidence, or eats itself alive?
02:08 The world votes: How does democracy work?
03:30 Taiwan: A win for democracy? A split vote in Taiwan won’t ease geopolitical pressure, but the elections themselves are part of the systemic struggle between autocracy and democracy.
05:17 India: Is majority rule enough? Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to secure a third term in office. But amid accusations of discrimination toward minorities, is gaining majority support good enough for good democracy?
11:30 Can South Africa revive its democratic dream? 2024 marks thirty years since the end of the racist apartheid regime in South Africa. Amid falling turnout and voter frustration, can a push to rejuvenate South African democracy work?
15:15 Mexico: Change for good? Mexico is set to get its first woman president in 2024. But amid allegations of backsliding under the outdoing leader, will this change help turn things around?
19:24 Will European democracy vote itself out of office? Hundreds of millions are eligible to vote in EU elections, but with the far right expected to make gains, will the bloc’s democracy be hamstrung by populist interests?
24:25 Will the US resign from democracy’s top job? Donald Trump is expected to make a comeback in the 2024 presidential race. Could a possible return imperil the future of democracy in the US and beyond?
29:35 Will democracy survive? Democracy stands on shaky ground in 2024. Is it still the right system for the challenges of this century?

    • The most sensible comment. This comment should be pinned. I see most right wingers getting pressed and commenting here, not able to handle criticism of their beloved autocrat leaders. On the other hand, the DW has covered both left and right wing governments taking control of the democracy. But the funny part it has gone over most brains of most of the right wingers. What DW is trying to say is the seperation of power must be maintained by any government, be it right or left. So that people will have the choice to raise their opinios and revolt or disagree with views and policies instead of getting suppressed.

Let's say, they are China and Russia (in a minor role). But they are spearheading the new wave of colonization. Wait... yes, India has the "freedom" to mutually annihilate with Pakistan with their nuclear weapons... which I will not classify as freedom at all. I will conclude in a more serious tone. Depending on what you think freedom is, you can have freedom. However, what you think is freedom is only a nationalistic illusion.

    • For your kind information, India was secular since its birth, Nehru tried to establish secular values in the government since his first day in the prime minister's office. The secularism was just officially declared by Indira Gandhi. Before that, India did not have any state religion and hence was secular. The Supreme Court has also said this in a verdict. But yes, it is true that India is secular because Hindus are in majority.

  • With PM Modi in India, I love that he has given the youth something to look forward to, to cherish their own culture, and that he has been targeting multidimensional poverty (albeit slowly). But I hate that people here don't care much of the declining independence of the accountability institutions (RTI, Lokpal, etc), the law enforcement agencies (CBI, ED) and BJP's general frustration with Parliament procedures. And I also hate that Congress didn't do things properly that people are ready to give BJP a completely free hand. The way I see, an idealistic way forward could be when BJP respects all good things it has done, but also the important institutions that make India the largest democracy.

  • The video's Indian journalist falsely claimed that India embraced secular democracy post-independence. In 1976, 30 years later, "secular" and "socialist" were amended to the Constitution without public input. People in India advocate for removing these words, with the government reportedly taking steps towards their removal.

Through great sacrifices and efforts, international standards have been established to determine what abuses to humanity are considered unacceptable. The western "democracies" presented as protagonists at risk here, have been the prime violators of said standards, and they are now failing to control the narrative to claim otherwise. The perspective of loss is an illusion, these powers are overdue for collapse, and most of mankind will benefit from their fall. DW really demonstrated their U.S. lapdog status here, and have entirely relinquished what little journalistic credibility they had.
