India has had 75 years of peaceful power transitions. Just because Modi is loved by a sizeable population doesn’t make it “democratic backsliding”. There’s a right wing wave across the world. It’s no different in India.

For your kind information, India was secular since its birth, Nehru tried to establish secular values in the government since his first day in the prime minister's office. The secularism was just officially declared by Indira Gandhi. Before that, India did not have any state religion and hence was secular. The Supreme Court has also said this in a verdict. But yes, it is true that India is secular because Hindus are in majority.

What is this women even talking about ?? The government in India has no role in appointment of judges to the High court and Supreme Court. The Supreme Court has got to be the most powerful court in world going by the unlimited powers it has. The appointment process of the ELection commission has been same since independence. The point of democracy is that they CONTINUE to be able to have power. So if the current population votes in favour of fascism, the issue is that they are depriving the opposition AND future generations of the power to influence the government. And congress had dragged reservation system . Which has to end after 20 years of independence. But till now general category is victim of this.

With PM Modi in India, I love that he has given the youth something to look forward to, to cherish their own culture, and that he has been targeting multidimensional poverty (albeit slowly). But I hate that people here don't care much of the declining independence of the accountability institutions (RTI, Lokpal, etc), the law enforcement agencies (CBI, ED) and BJP's general frustration with Parliament procedures. And I also hate that Congress didn't do things properly that people are ready to give BJP a completely free hand. The way I see, an idealistic way forward could be when BJP respects all good things it has done, but also the important institutions that make India the largest democracy.

I feel very happy that I belong to India where democracy has been an integral part of our nation since independence. This year also, we will elect a strong government in a free and fair election. General elections have always been fair in India. As of minorities, their rights are very safe and they also get equal votes. Minorities are largest receivers of government aid. But DW can't just say these things out loud.

A democracy is a marketplace of idea's. It doesn't get weaker, if once side is unable to sell its ideas to the electorate. Or even explain those ideas in language that is understandable to the voters.
Interfering with a free and fair marketplace is exactly what weakens democracy. Voter suppression, insurrection, intimidation, foreign interference. Ideas are fair game, but anti-democratic methods are not.

This is obviously the point - even if you sometimes need to be generous in you "reading" (which you should be, because otherwise you'll end up constantly needing to have basic things explained to you).
