Structura Gallery Performances: David Page. Thought Experiment, 2018
Thought Experiment, a time-specific and participatory performance created by David Page specifically for Subversive Play exhibition at Structura Gallery, curated by Izabel Galliera
Page’s performance intends to explore the contentious yet necessary relationship between control and agency. The performance consists of restraint suits designed and sewn by the artist out of vinyl, felt and canvas in which two human volunteers are dressed, then immobilized onto boards and counterbalanced at sixty degrees to one another. Page refers to the restraining suits as “sarcophagus-like cover, which necessitates a device for ventilation and cooling.” He adds hand-operated bellows that invite the participation of viewers in activating them to ensure the people inside the suits are able to breath and are comfortable.

Being strapped to a board and having a vinyl tarp secured over that. Two layers of restraints that one cannot get out of on their own. The only thing missing are padlocks. I'd like to volunteer.

Is one bellows to feed air in to the suit, and the other to remove air from the suit? That would create a need for coordinated teamwork between the two assistants. Beautiful.

I'm trying to understand the point, and I think I'm starting to get it. Is it like a light introductory to some aspects of the BDSM for those who are not familiar with what it is? Presumably, to emphasize the feeling that your life literally depends on someone you trust applying some work in order to keep you alive?

It depends on the environment and who you are with, your state of mind and how long you are in it. From experience, left like that for 12 hours or more it can feel like your floating and safe. But you need real trust in the person doing it.
When I’m doing it it’s tight safe warm and comfortable. It feels good to sleep in it. It’s like floating a couple feet off the ground. But usually makes me fall asleep

@@structuragallery7347 It would be very exciting if patrons of the exhibit were selected to experience the feeling. Perhaps, even be part of a random drawing, as part of their ticket purchase. My BFF and I would love to watch, then be selected to participate, experiencing all aspects of the installation.

These "suits" definitely do not look airtight.
And they shouldn't be airtight. It is an artwork about control and being isolated. Like one of his more previous works called security theatre. You are isolated from the influences of world and secure. But you change freedom für this feeling of security.
