Hayao Miyazaki's first feature film in 10 years, The Boy and the Heron is a hand-drawn, original story written and directed by the Academy Award®-winning director. Produced by Studio Ghibli co-founder Toshio Suzuki, the film features a musical score from Miyazaki's long-time collaborator Joe Hisaishi. The theme song for the film "Spinning Globe" was penned and performed by global J-pop superstar Kenshi Yonezu.

This is probably one of the few movies from Ghibli that's NOT worth getting, as it's more of a self-indulgent art piece by Miyazaki, than actually interested in entertaining his studio's fans.

As someone who is teaching themselves animation, the animation in this movie IS UTTERLY MIND-BLOWING!!!!!
I think it's great animation, but I don't study animation, so I probably can't appreciate it at your level. What kinds of things is the average viewer overlooking that you notice with your trained eye?
For me this is Miyazaki's Magnum Opus. His most personal film, a complex and metaphoric but beautiful masterpiece. Love it's getting a 4K release, the first time for a Studio Ghibli film.

@@davinasbury5562The Castle of Cagliostro isn’t a Ghibli movie. It was directed by Miyazaki BEFORE he established Studio Ghibli, and he doesn’t have the rights to it cuz it’s part of the larger Lupin III franchise.

This was such a beautiful movie, rememincing Miyazakis lifehood. Loved the little nods to his previous works throughout as well. I'm definitely getting this on digital.

Oddly it seems you can actually own a copy July 9th but rent essentially temporarily own a copy whilst you have a subscription to a streaming platform June 25th. Which seems poor logic of distribution. I guess it's less expensive for the distribution packaging and shipping physical copies but its bound to end up on a pirate bay site the day after it appears on Apple TV
Finally! I got impatient over waiting for this and Godzilla Minus One on digital but one of them finally got announced. Now all we have to wait for is Godzilla Minus One's digital release announcement
I think the other Studio Ghibli movies should deserve a 4K UHD+Blu-Ray release too someday.
Hello! This comment used to point out that the GKIDS Store listings for both the standard and SteelBook editions of the 4K Blu-ray initially read that the movie simply featured "HDR 10 plus Dolby Atmos" on the product description, when the inclusion of Dolby Vision means that the mention of Dolby Vision should be prioritized over that of HDR10's, but now I see that they noticed and both product descriptions have been fixed, so all is good now. Once again, thank you very much for everything! I will be pre-ordering this as soon as possible. Now, _who wants a Baconator??_ 😆🍔🥓🧀
Normally, when they include Dolby Vision, HDR 10 goes without saying, so all they would need to say is Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos. But yes, they should definitely list it if Dolby Vision is included.
My guess is if it isn't listed to have Dolby Vision on the disc then Dolby Vision isn't on the disc

This is so exciting to see _Boy and the Heron_ finally get a home video release and although we have to wait 2 ½ months till it comes out on physical media, I’m moreso impressed that it’s the first Ghibli film released on 4K UHD. Hopefully some of Miyazaki’s earlier films such as _Spirited Away, My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki’s Delivery Service, Howl’s Moving Castle_ and a few other Ghibli films get a 4K remaster even if it will be a while to see it happen since remastering older Traditional Hand Drawn films, especially the ones drawn by hand can be a painstaking process that can take months removing most of the dust and having to have the colors match the original film negatives when they were first released in theaters, but hey a guy can dream.
It worked for Snow White and Cinderella, they look even better in 4K than they did on Blu-ray

@@alechall7082 technically that isn't a Ghibli film, sure it would have all the hallmarks of the studio to be, especially the elements you would expect from Miyazaki, but the reality is that it's a Lupin III film, which does have elements that don't feel like Lupin (especially with how Fujiko looks and acts), but it's still a Lupin III film from beginning to end

I hope this Studio Ghibli Film Fest comes to America AMC Movie Theaters again next year, because There’s some that I may not have time to experience in Dubbed English like Spirited Away. I’m saving up for Kiki’s Delivery Service this year. Last year I was able to see My Neighbor Totoro in Dubbed English. But as for Kiki’s Delivery Service last year, I saw the wrong Audio language that was original with subtitles. This year I see which Dubbed English show time is available. Again, I’m hoping that next year Studio Ghibli Film Fest returns to America AMC Movie Theaters so I can & will experience Spirited Away in Dubbed English on the Big Screen. Better make that 2 Films Spirited Away & Tales From Earthsea in Dubbed English next year. “🤞🤞Here’s hoping.”

Will hype from The Boy and the Heron be enough to rescue the audio issues from Kiki's Delivery Service? I really hope so. Also, please release Castle in the Sky on blu ray WITH the option to watch the film with the revised soundtrack by Joe Hisaishi and additional English dubbing lines. A handful of the best dubbing lines from Kiki were also removed, notably those from Jiji.

Why is it taking soooooo long
My first studio ghibli film I’ve witnessed on the big screen. It was nice to have an audience that appreciates Miyazakis work but I felt that the movie lacked the same heart that spirited away as well as howls moving castle had. It sort of felt rushed at times and I was a bit confused by the story once the third act came but I appreciated it all regardless

The film talks about overcoming a loss and knowing that everything has an end, you have to live. But… “How will you live?” (That’s actually the original film’s title)
This movie sucks and the people hyping it up like it's a well written masterpiece is fucking wild like just because it's visually gorgeous but visuals can not make up for a meandering confusing story that really doesn't have progress
Even the soundtrack wasn't very good. I always buy every soundtrack because Joe Hisaishi is a genius but probably not this one. Honestly Miyazaki makes movies about his ww2 trauma and expects us not to notice

Thank goodness; some normal people who don't just accept everything they're served with a smile. You can be a fan, and still be justifiably critical when necessary. That's how we get better shows and movies in the future.

Spiderverse fans crying. What are you even doing here if you dislike the film?? lmao Miyazaki has a special way of story telling. Miyazaki's way of creating the worlds of his films. Some people hate the fact that we will never get an answer, but for me this is the most magical thing Miyazaki does while telling stories, because it makes the world bigger, keeps the mystery even if you already saw the film and makes your imagination fly. Also, this film is in fact his most personal and complex film, full of metaphors. 1 view doesn't explain everything. If you want a McDonald's you should go get it, this is not another plastic Hollywood blockbuster, this is Miyazaki using cinema as a form of art, of expression. Everything can be better understood if you know some context about his life, past and present and about Ghibli's situation.
