We just took part in a Victorian Christmas at our historic village and focused on frontier foods for Christmas. So this was timely! Thanks and merry Christmas to both of you!

I always imagined that in the Old West, Christmas dinner may be as simple as a big pot of chili, or roasted wild game with "fixin's" on the side. Maybe a pecan pie for dessert. However simple the dinner, it's special if it's shared with family and friends on Christmas. Merry Christmas to you and your family!

My childhood Christmas eves were spent at the family gathering at my grandparents' in the WV mountains, where Grandma cooked for everyone on the old coal stove. Great memories! Merry Christmas to all!

Merry Christmas Santee, Mrs Santee and all the Arizona Ghostriders. Although it did not come out until 1896, i have an old edition of the Fanny Merritt farmer Boston School of Cooking cook book. The recipes for holidays complete with menus and what gets served from the first course to the last course of desert (including drinks) is very detailed. i could not imagine eating seven courses of food or more! PS. love me some Kent Rawlins but will never look at a beagle the same again :))

Yeah the thing with a lot of those old deserts was that sugar used to be so much more expensive, especially in frontier areas. That’s why raisins were so popular in everything lol. As sugar prices and food trends caught up in various places, they moved away from dried fruit deserts and bread puddings and whatnot. Coconut cream pie is definitely an upgrade on fruit cakes lol

The line “we won’t go until we get some” is a reference to the early days of caroling in England. It use to get pretty freaking crazy, to the point where caroling was actually outlawed for a bit. Think Mardi Gras on steroids.
