A COLD WEEK ON THE FARM - and happy about it!

COLD , way more beautiful and fun than our usual winter conditions ( wet and windy has been the norm ) This week it’s breaking the ice, enjoying the sunshine and we have an escaped highland cow! Hope you enjoy the video!
A big thank you to Ridgeline Clothing for kindly sending me a wonderful new outfit of jacket and trousers ! And nick a new coat! Farming is more comfortable when you have the right gear and I have been snug as a bug all week in my outfit !

Sir Nick of the short pants....OMG ....I'm cold just seeing him out there....your in the cold over there in Britain and here in 🇨🇦 it rained...and rained and rained last week....and was like 6c degrees above....95% of the snow is gone....but we have had almost no sunshine since December 19 of 2023... as alway another great video....

Hey Joanna! I agree, being outdoors on a chilly and still morning is incredible. I especially love being in the woods in those conditions when a light snow is falling. It truly is as if you can hear the snow falling. Very peaceful.
The view in the beginning was lovely. Thankyou for sharing this lovely video . Love that you use natural sound . I could hear the stillness and quit . And all the crows and birds . Sooo nice . Kitty got it's prize . Glad the rain let up for you . Take care .

The morning skies and land are stunning! I love it when we are up in the woods and the day is calm and all you sense is the smell of the forest and the silence only broken by bird song. The sheep look great and of course the Highlands with their teddy bear faces. Take care and keep warm or dry or whatever nature decides to send your way.

Very pretty country and tour guide ! Trying something a little different, I started my garden season a tad early today. I made little mini greenhouses out of gallon plastic milk jugs and am cold stratifying some broccoli and poppy seeds in them . Can’t wait for spring the cold weather makes my bad leg with the metal in it ache like a tooth ache.
I have planted a few seeds which are indoors on the window sill! I will do some more in march!

We definitely need a dry spell , hopefully some in march to prepare the fields and the same some dry April weather for the lambs to arrive but not a drought !!!

ThanksJo, there was some fantastic shots of the countryside which were heartwarming on a winters day. You've still got a good load of wrapped hay so the animals will be OK for food. Please tell Nick he makes me shiver in just his shorts, and he'll say I'm a wimp and he's not wrong, but I hate the cold. Best wishes from EA.

GOOD cat! As always Joanna, great video videography shots! The weather always helps in that regard. And Nick, great tool choice - Makita has always been my first choice because the tools last! I think all livestock has a 'gene' that looks for the fence line weak spots...it's a very intelligent gene too! Proper kit always makes the day go better! Enjoyed the video - thanks for sharing. Yes, the sunrise captures everything in a beautiful light. If only every morning was as good but then it would lose its magical appeal. Nick looked industrious with the drill and saw. Was there some double entendre humour at play or am I missing the point? Anyway, whatever, it appealed to my wicked sense of humour. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Guys, we are in the midst of storm Isha at the moment, 8pm on Sunday January 21st, very rough indeed.
The storms were awful ! Hopefully soon be spring !
We are 0 degrees Fahrenheit with a wind chill of -12 degrees Fahrenheit. Has been really cold and miserable.

It was a brief cold spell it’s been so wet and not nice bright cold weather which is much better in my opinion ( cold and crisp )

Some how you need to get some heaters for the water containers, it would really help with the ice problem.

It’s been proper grand the last week! Great sunrises and sunsets, hard ground and no roast on my truck to scrape on a morning !😆😁. Looks like it’s gonna go pear shaped this week though 😩🤦♂. We’ve grass starts to shoot already though!

Beautiful footage of the farm, the buildings and the water flowing at the stream Joanna. The scene with the Viaduct is just stunning. It's like something you'd see on a postcard. Well done getting Daphne back. Our dairy cows used to sometimes butt an innocent one of their number into or through a fence and of course we'd have to get her back in and repair the fence. Happily the same animal usually never got caught unawares again, but then on the other hand, there'd be the odd one that you'd see deliberately rogue through or over even good fences for no apparent reason. These persistent rogues didn't last long and were sold because they were always a real nuisance and a massive pain in the a..e. As always, you're both doing a top job with the livestock and the running of Dale Farm. Take care.

Been a bit of a steady few weeks here, rain and mud makes me feel More depressed than anything so not Filmed much x
@@DaleFarmI can certainly relate somewhat to how you feel Joanna. Constant rainfall and muddy conditions certainly do make a farmer feel downhearted. It always restricts you from doing a lot of jobs that you'd really like to get done but can't because of the boggy conditions. On top of that the worst things for us with unending rain was the delayed planting of seasonal crops or even worse havesting and baling crop ruined and lost etc. The livestock especially the dairy cows used to really suffer too. In many ways it was as bad as a full-on drought. Back in the day some of the older farmers used to call it a"wet drought" situation, which was pretty apt really. The only comforting thing I can say Joanna is that at least with every passing day it's another day closer to getting back to a more normal season. Thinking of you both. Take care.
Looking beautiful - winter is such a pretty time of the year - I am in NZ at we are going for most of the country 26-31 degrees during the day so mightly warm and by the looks our Aussie farmers in Western Aussie and Central Aussie will have 50 degree days next week - that will be hard on their sheep

Thanks for the update Joanna, that frost was needed to help dry the ground up. Cattle and sheep looking well your extra feed and minerals are all helping. It’s a real struggle getting water to the livestock when it’s all frozen up. You two are looking good in your ridgeline range, ideal for farming and/or outside activities. It will get the ultimate test out with you two. What temperature did you you get down to it was looking about -5 maybe. Keep safe and warm you two.
I have lived in the Ridgeline and so has nick! Been mostly wet, not enough dry or sun! Hard to stay positive but spring is coming xx thank you for the comments about the sheep! I try my best with them!
