Avalanche caught CLOSE-UP by FPV drone - Long range mountain surfing in 4k

We were out for a day of long range mountain surfing in British Columbia on Vancouver Island with our long range drones (that we build ourselves), hoping to get some nice cinematic footage. There was a "severe avalanche warning" a couple of days prior, but things seemed to have calmed down. Just when were were getting ready to leave, I looked up and saw a huge avalanche coming down the mountain right in front of us! I scrambled to get a battery on my long range FPV drone, fumbled with my GoPro, and booked it out towards the mountain as fast as I possibly could. I got there just in time to see an absolutely scary amount of snow from an avalanche hitting the bottom of the mountain. What looks like water in this video is actually a huge amount of snow, with some chuncks as big as my truck.
Since I had the goggles on, I couldn't see what was goin on around me, and I was pretty paranoid about the avalanche coming down the mountain, through the valley and up the other side where we were sitting, all without me knowing. I was also worried that the road would get obliterated and we'd be stuck way out in the back country. Luckily, it wasn't even close.
* I'm trying to get a documentary made about drone mountain surfing - If you can help in some way, please contact me! *
Here's the FPV long range drone rig I used:

- Caddx Vista
-True RC antennas all around
- TBS Crossfire diversity receiver
- GNB 4500 LiPo HV 6s battery

      @jlt131@jlt131 Жыл бұрын
    • @@jlt131 The sound is picked up by the GoPro on the drone, however all it picks up is the sound of the propellers (because it's about an inch away!). I have recordings of avalanches up close, and used those for the sound, added in post. I'm always afraid of crashing too! Especially when flying close to the ground - if you get a rock between you and the drone, it loses signal and you can easily lose the drone.

    • @@oldmech619 3 years ago I scored on clearance at Target the original DJI Mavic Pro 4K drone and it’s little brother the DJI Spark, for $425 and $199 which was a steal. Both of them absolutely blew my mind, it is one of the best purchases of my life and one of few that truly “does everything they said it does”. It is completely mind blowing to fly 1-3 miles away completely out of sight and be watching a nice big HD video feed on my iPad, and be able to press 1 button and hands free these things will fly themselves home and land on their takeoff point with accuracy the size of a license plate. Exactly like a SpaceX rocket booster returning to its pad. And my drones are several generations old (not that they’ve had any major evolutions since then, just incrementally longer range, flying time, and video bitrate.) If you ever thought about getting one, do it! You don’t have to drop 2 Grand on the latest model. Tons of used kits out there. Also my biggest fear was always to crash and lose my investment. Well I can say now you have to be foolish/reckless to do that. These drones are Damn reliable as long as you follow the rules of flying responsibly and stop yourself from getting carried away taking risks.

  • I'm in absolute Awe! What are the range on these things? I couldn't believe that you went ALL THE WAY TO THE TOP OF THE FRICKEN MOUNTAIN!! I kept waiting for you to stop and turn around but it's clear your are a very skilled drone pilot and you know what your limits are. Thank you for the beautiful video. Can't wait to see the next one and the next one and so on.

    • @@steiner554 - I'm not sure what he's flying, but the farthest I ever took one of my DJI drones was a bit over 3 miles out over flat ground. I gained quite a bit of extra range by installing little plastic dishes over the antenna with foil on them. That made the antenna more directional than omnidirectional, but gave them more power in that direction. I'd imagine with actual custom equipment one could go quite a bit farther, though battery life would become an issue. At 3 miles out and back with minimal wind I still only had about 20% battery life left.

    • Are you a DJI FPV Pilot per chance? I have the Mavic Pro and Spark which obviously maintain level flight at all times unless you enable FPV mode but even then they travel along a horizontal axis of perfectly flat altitude. I have been extremely curious how different it feels to pilot one of these true FPV drones that is entirely untethered from gravity.
