I Went To A Volcanic Spa In Iceland

HELLO FRIENDS!! It's time for my annual bath - and for such an occasion, we decided to travel to most famous geothermal spa in Iceland - the Blue Lagoon. I've been wanting to unleash an international spa travel series for a long time - so here is my formal declaration: it's spa time, baby!
So this past January, as the first installment of a 3-part Nordic/Scandinavian travel trip, we journeyed to the beautiful, mineral-rich light blue waters of the Blue Lagoon - to soak, smoothie, and face mask, oh my. Will this magical lagoon keep my skin plump and youthful forever? Or will the lava rock exfoliate my face right off? Who knows!
Quick note - we mentioned that the Reykjanes lava field was 800 years old - I think it's actually much, much older than that - but the earliest recorded eruption was about 800 years ago (which is where our fact came from)!
Also, because I've seen a few comments about it - no, the cups at the lagoon bar are not glass! They are plastic.

    • Hi there as an indigenous person our nation hold legends of the northern lights for centuries, some of us believe we came from the stars and when we die our spirts dance in the sky as northern lights. Because of this belief it is high recommended you do not film the northern lights as it is seen as incredibly disrespectful towards the culture and community. If you do end up doing because you don’t care please at least have an indigenous person explain the importance and significance of the lights in your video to at least educate others within your platform. @safiya plsssss read this!!!

  • This is such a coincidence! I'm writing a term paper on geothermal resources and how humans use them. I had to mention the blue lagoon in it. Fun fact about sulfur: it is proven to help treat skin diseases like eczema and psoriasis. I referenced a couple of medical journals for it. Iceland sits on top of the Mid Atlantic ridge (a divergent plate boundary) which is what causes all of the geothermal activity. There's all this magma rising up from beneath the crust to create more. The magma reacts with the water and Chemical reactions happen. One of which is the precipitation of sulfur

If Iceland ceased to exist it wouldn't even cut 0,1% of all pollution so you achieve little but inconvenience people.

  • I'm 48 and Icelandic, from Reykjavik. When I was a kid, probably around 10 or so, so around 1985, the blue lagoon was pretty new. I developed some skin condition on the soles of my feet and was "prescribed" by my family physician to go bathe in the lagoon as the benefit for Psoriasis patients had already been established. At the time, the lagoon was right next to the Svartsengi power plant and not so far away from it as it is now. The changing room facilities was a literal shed with 3 showers and hangers for 10-15 people or so. This place has come a long way since then. Now I don't recommend anybody to go there as it's pricey as hell for going to a geothermal pool in Iceland. Reykjavik alone has 16 such pools to visit, all of them with a selection of hot tubs and even saunas as well. Price of entry there: 1/10th of the Blue Lagoon cost. Safiya and Tyler, if you ever make it back to Iceland I'd love to take you around and show you some nice sights...

It is very expensive and touristy, but the public pools are sooo nice, way more accessible, and where you get to meet people who actually live there. It's a super social space, all the public pools have jacuzzis ("hot pots") to chat in, and most have a free hammam or sauna.

    • I also went to both Blue and Sky when I visited in early March 2023. I enjoyed finding the water ejection ports at Blue where the really hot water gets pumped in, but it was a little unfortunate to need to stay mindful of the silica and my hair. Sky had a MUCH cooler view, and was still pretty hot (not AS potentially hot as Blue, though), but be mindful that there are no windbreaks due to being open at the western (ocean-facing) end. It was windy, cold, and a little snowy that day, which froze my hair like a helmet on my head. However, it also made the experience quite interesting, and I could dunk under the water to thaw my face and hair. I also ran into some Scots and Brits between both places, so it was a good opportunity to get some inside info for my UK trip I hope to take in the future.

  • Watching your video, allowed me to see & learn something I will never go and do for myself. But I had a great time watching Safiya&Tyler !!! I LOVED the Vegas food trip! That was awesome too
