  • They skipped over what's arguably the most interesting part about Supergirl. Superman was born on Krypton but was raised on Earth. He has no memory of Krypton or its tragic end. His notion of Krypton comes from archives and holograms. Kara was born and raised on Krypton. She had friends and family, a whole life and then she watched as her world literally burned. Everything and everyone she had ever known was wiped out. The only thing that keeps her from completely breaking down is the fact that she has a mission, to find and protect her infant cousin except by the time she reaches Earth, her cousin not only doesn't need protecting, he's a revered icon of this primitive alien world. The first season of Supergirl should really have been about that. It should be about her having PTSD, survivor's guilt, about dealing with her trauma and her resentment for Clark and the world he calls home. It should have been about her learning about Earth and figuring out if she can have a life and not be consumed by misery. Really the last episode of the first season should have been Kara putting on the suit for the first time. But instead they just skipped over all that dramatic potential and made her a Superman clone. Look, the first season of Supergirl wasn't bad but the whole show ended up being a waste of the character and a waste of potential.

    • You're totally right, and I think the biggest mistake in this show was the fact that the story starts like many years after she arrive to earth, because what you're saying it's more something she had to deal with in her early years, it would've been very interesting to see her path to become a hero, but it never happened, that's a huge waste of potential

    • So, what the video said?

      @CanelaAguila@CanelaAguila Жыл бұрын
    • The video covers this. I see a few difficulties going with this: 1. The woman playing Supergirl would have to be a young girl, not an adult woman. Or you cast an adult to play a high school aged kid like most TV shows and movies do. 2. In casting a young girl as your star you now have to follow labor laws about shooting with minors. Some of the biggest drawbacks to this are 8 hr work days max, 48 hrs per week max, schooling has to be provided, and can only work during specific hours of the day. That's a lot to deal with for your LEAD actor and show's namesake. 3. A young Kara doesn't match up with The Flash and Green Arrow. How can you do crossover team-ups when 2 of the 3 are adults? 4. You have more to censor. How is an audience going to react to seeing a young girl getting punched and beat up? Even though she has super strength, durability, etc, she is still human in appearance which comes with rules. I think a 1st season focusing on this was THE way to go but for live action it makes it extremely difficult when a simple time jump is a lot easier.

  • Melissa Benoist is such a good actress and I LOVE her as Supergirl and I despise how CW just shat all over both Kara and Melissas potential. I especially love the concept of Alex Danvers and her relationship with Kara and what that brought and could brought to BOTH their arcs. Im so angry CW did them both fucking dirty.

    @tempestroadside@tempestroadside Жыл бұрын
    • Melissa though, still had some views (not all, but some) that aligned with what the CW wanted in terms of changing or influencing the audience - like how masculinity (the idea that all men are universally evil beings) should stamped out by women in today's culture, and like the video says the writers wanted to compare (or unseat) Superman to only Kara having greater achievements over her cousin. It's almost like how Disney made Disey Ridley become Rey Skywalker while making Luke Skywalker be ousted in the sequel trilogy & making Rey all perfect in everyone's eyes. In contrast, in Legends, the fans wanted Luke to still play a major role in the stories of Thrawn and others while creating new female characters that don't take away from Luke's part in the universe to face new threats after the original series. Melissa is a good actress, but some in the CW casting & directors had agendas that many in the audience likely saw would later doom the show in the long run. I am only saying this as an independent viewer who has watched many shows (like The Flash, for example) that have tried to do similar things and only met a very brief footnote in television history. CW needs to learn the lessons from what their previous show, Smallville, brought to the table and why people loved that show even after almost two decades since it aired. That show did Supergirl justice, for what it's worth.

      @SolidAvenger1290@SolidAvenger12904 ай бұрын

I am not that into DC comics, beyond Batman, and I always assumed that SuperGirl was a genderbent version of Superman, mainly based off of this show and the old movie made of her, so I never gave her a chance. So hearing what she is actually about kind of shocked me. She sounds INCREDIBLY interesting, and it baffles me that they have not taken even a little bit of what she is actually about and translated it to screen. Just listening I can, in a way, relate to her, and as a child I know I would have loved her as having ADHD and a bit of an anger issue made me feel like I was all alone and a complete outsider.

  • Supergirl's Red Lantern arc is unironically one of her best stories aside from her origin story. In some ways it fits her well because her character is really built around her two conflicting traits of both anger and a sense of justice. At the same time, even though she's the most powerful Red Lantern and the Red Lanterns are really glad to have her around when there's a fight, they also recognize that she's not truly HAPPY as a Red Lantern, despite being so good at it. At some point Guy Gardner (who defected from Green to Red) actually convinces Kara to leave the Red Lanterns, which she does by flying into the sun and ripping off the ring (she has to do this since a Red Lantern removing their ring usually results in death without the aid of a Blue Lantern). Guy also doesn't want her to die in their upcoming fight against Atrocitus, the former founder of the Red Lantern Corps. She had so many cool defining character traits that made her different from any other superhero, and in the show we got NONE of them. Such a shame.

So at the human end of things, you've got Oliver who consistently won most of his fights on Arrow with very little help from any of his increasing band of sidekicks. Next up is Barry who gets his ass kicked a little and needs a bit more help from his respective entourage, but he still gets more than a few victories and fundamentally, he is usually allowed to operate at full power. Then there's Kara. And because she's basically uber-powerful, the writers consistently have no clue how to incorporate that into a story. And so begins a literally weekly list of reasons why every episode's baddie of the week is stronger than her. And that's not taking into account her general nerfing, not least of which are the countless times she seems to forget she has super speed.

  • 22:24 Bro, remember in S1 when Cat Grant deduced that Kara was Supergirl and then told her to her face that she'd worked this out, thanking her for saving her life time after time in a genuinely effective and touching moment that promised to move these two characters forward? Aaaand then next episode opens on Kara trying frantically to convince Cat that she's not actually Supergirl despite the infinitely more dignified and logical option being to just accept it, and then the episode ends on Martian Manhunter using his powers to make it look like Kara and Supergirl are in the same room, making Cat completely retract what she'd been saying all episode and reverting their relationship back to the status quo? She was 15/16/17 when Krypton blew up and by all accounts was a regular teenage Kryptonian. Unless it was hidden in some dialogue in the mediocre New 52 runs which doesn't exist anymore. And the dialogue of "I don't really care about humans yadda yadda yadda" doesn't make any sense because she wouldn't have taken up the Super family mantle otherwise. "I dress up and act like a superhero just because I want to beat the shit out of people". It's a kind of fundamentally flawed view/writing of the character. She's hotheaded because she's ultimately still a teenager and doesn't know the boundaries of her strength. Teenagers like I was back then, famously have zero self control in general.

    • SJw's are in charge of the DC universe on the CW now. 1'st 2 seasons were cool and weren't cringe. Then they let the SJW's take over. Like the video said, but in nmore detail. What makes supergirl so interesting is her struggle trying to fit in. She remembers krypton, krypton was waaay more advanced than earth. She always ran into issues concerning this. She was also very confident and felt above humans. She couldn't figure out how superman lived like them and holds himself back. CW got popular with the superhero genre and the higher ups stepped in. They're on a "woke" kick right now. So they ordered supergirl to be a show about "'girl power" and SJW politics. Prime example, all of the men are weak and women are strong. Her adopted sister(who basically plays the role superman played in her life) used to be a great mentor and a bad ass. Then got turned into a LGBT check box who also wants to be a mother really bad lol. Then there's the destruction of Braniac 5. He's been turned into a love interest of a transexual super hero(which was a very minor super hero smh). Funny thing is, Braniac's personality and character is how supergirl is supposed to be portrayed lol.

  • This is something I wrote a few years ago and saved. Here's a copy and paste of that. My version of Superman was the 50’s early 60’s version where about the only thing that would bother him was Kryptonite and magic. I do remember reading later that there was a feeling he was too perfect. I also watched the old TV show with George Reeves, have seen all the movies, the Supergirl movie with Helen Slater, TV shows Lois & Clark, Smallville and more recently Supergirl, and now Superman and Lois on the CW. I was born in 1947 and comics helped me learn to read. I collected comics, Action, Superman, Superboy, Batman, etc. I know I had stopped by the time I went to college in 1965 but I’m not sure exactly when. I had quite a collection including the first Supergirl, Justice League, Bizarro, even had some Disney stuff like the 1st Uncle Scrooge. Unfortunately my mom threw them all out when I went to college. Always found it interesting how writers would adjust the “magnitude” of Clark’s powers to fit the plot. Superman could handle a nuke. Yet in one episode in Lois and Clark this stupid looking weapon hurt him by working at the “atomic level”. You don’t think a nuclear bomb works at the atomic level. I had the same feeling when seeing some girl who can harness electricity hurt Supergirl with it and had the same feeling about that ax type thing in the pilot episode. I also felt that Superman had to learn an important lesson. When fighting other supers “Don’t Hold Back”. In the second Christopher Reeve move when he fights Zod he needed to learn that. I thought the fight with the bully in the luncheonette was totally screwed up. After he hits Clark in the back and sends him through that glass wall instead of just going back and standing there Clark should have charged him and tackled him. They should have had a knock down drag out fight with Clark barely winning. He had to learn to not hold back. Don’t let the other guy get the first hit. Take the bastard out. It’s an important lesson he had to learn when fighting other supers. In a review of the movie Man of Steel in Entertainment Weekly the idiot actually complained about Superman killing Zod, breaking his neck. I jumped all over that review. Pointing out that in that second Reeve movie Superman kills Zod at the end and Zod didn’t even have powers then. In a Smallville episode in a cage fight Clark kills another super Krytonian by hitting him with every thing he had. I really liked that episode. The reviewer had no idea what he was talking about. BTW, the reviewer obviously revised the review later taking that garbage out. BTW, who's more powerful Capt Marvel or Superman/Supergirl? Captain Marvel doesn't need a yellow sun. She can travel the whole cosmos unencumbered. BUT, after seeing the Capt Marvel movie and Avengers Endgame it seems to me Supeman/Supergirl are stronger and can take a hit better. At least that’s true for the 50’s early 60’s comics version. BTW, I once proposed a much more scientific explanation for why a yellow sun gives Krytonians super powers. The yellow sun acts as a catalyst allowing them to metabolize nutrients according to E=MC^2. We chemically metabolize nutrients for energy; they are nuclear powered able to turn the total mass of nutrients into total energy. They are nuclear powered and able to control that. It even would explain Kryptonite. Kryptonite totally shuts that down. It would also explain something else. They don’t really need to breath. Oxygen is needed for us to oxidize our nutrients. They are nuclear powered, no need for O2. No problem flying in space. If there are any writers of the series reading this? I give you permission to use that concept. ;-) BTW, continuing the affects of the yellow sun on him as making him nuclear powered I proposed much different plots for the 3rd and 4th Christopher Reeve movies. Think Star Wars death star or later Independence Day. Extraterrestrial Invading force, Superman can block their weapons but could not bust their force fields. He gets them to come close to the sun. Supercharged he busts their force field and destroys them. Forth movie; he likes the high. Like someone taking steroids, like someone on drugs. He keeps flying to the sun to get his high like a drug addict.

She may play a superhero on TV, but a lot of people consider her to be a real life Supergirl because of how she uses her platform, an example of this is when she shared her experience with domestic violence, and has helped many people in similar situations. Could have been like on Arrow where we get flashbacks of her learning about human culture, life lessons, her trauma of krypton and better analyze why she didn't immediately follow Clark's footsteps. I remember Clark wanted her to have a normal childhood, but I can't remember them explaining why she chooses to sit back and just act like a normal human as an adult. Seems like she she should have jumped in and helped before her sister was in danger. They could have given more development to her relationships she has at the start of the series. I remember watching Superman/Batman: Apocalypse and being like, oh this Kara is much more interesting. They even give an explanation to why she could potentially surpass Superman in power. In the show, she beats him because she's the protagonist.

  • Not a comics reader, but "She's just a female Superman" and "What about her being a 1.5 generation immigrant?" were issues for me immediately with Kara's/Supergirl's character so I loved finding this video with you talking about those issues. I also completely agree on the show being completely direct and in your face and dumbed down about "political" messages even when I agree with them. I can kind of be ok with it because of believing the messages need to be said, but it's just not very well done. I will say that I checked and you dropping the show at S3 E2 meant you missed a line I enjoyed in S3 E3. If you don't remember, Kara's adoptive sister Alex has a Mexican American girlfriend, Maggie, at that point in the show. Maggie was thrown out of her home as a teenager when her father learned she was a lesbian, and in this episode she confronts him and they have a cheesy fight in which he rants about racism and she proclaims pride in her sexuality and that people are more accepting now. It ends with him dropping the bomb "The only thing they hate more than a Mexicano, is a homosexual."--which is still cheesey but, yay, hints at intersectionality and at discrimination and minorities not being monoliths--and then leaving her with "The world is not different, my dear. Look, you can live any way you please. But don't ask me to witness it."--which, holy moly has complexity implications! I hate the "Pysch! Discrimination A wasn't happening here and *you're* the bigot for thinking it was, my character was concerned with issue B!" trope when it's just being dismissive about A in the A-and-B-bait-and-switch and blaming victims for being aware and speaking up, but instead of taking that reading with this dialogue I'm going for the intersectionality, greater complexity, etc. ideas because I love that Maggie's dad is calling out the world on not being accepting enough yet and even going backwards in progress instead of him embracing the simplistic optimism that gets the most emphasis in this show, that he's exhibiting fear in the neverending struggle to assimilate enough and internalized bigotry while seeking acceptability, that he's enabling division amongst minorities and the infighting and exclusion that minorities will perpetuate when they're fighting for conditional acceptance from bigoted society. And if i want to be extra generous on possible subtlety and complexity from the CW, we can circle back to the dismissive bait and switch thing and question Maggie's dad trying to claim he wasn't homophobic, he was pragmatic--we can examine how such a claim is an excuse for homophobia and still is homophobic, how it's misdirection (and even gaslighting) and victim blaming.

Heck, there's a mountain of things that can make her as a complex character like she saw the death of Krypton, staying in the phantom zone for 24 years awake, Clark leaving her with the Danvers family, Alex killing Astra and more. They could make scenarios of what she thought and feel about it, how she'll solve those issue. • I loved the first season of supergirl - I know nothing about the comics or the character - it had a lot of joyful energy, explored Kara's grief and her relationship with the elders on Krypton in a way that female characters were starved of. It was cool to have a woman who was nuanced and angry but also Good when I was fifteen! It helped that Melissa and many others put their all into the performances and really appreciated what it meant to people. Completely went downhill in the second season and I abandoned it there but I loved the first season.

  • watching you go over supergirl in the comics vs the show made me realize that smallville did a much better job at capturing how isolated and socially different she can be compared to superman… oh i’m sorry… “the red-blue blur” 😉 than the actual supergirl show did. not that smallville got everything about supergirl right, and i do think the supergirl show really brought supergirl to a new audience who wouldn’t have watched smallville when it was airing, but it just bums me out about the wasted potential the show had with her character

    • Smallville got Supergirl right so so much better than her own show did. From her look, personality, her trauma over losing Krypton, longing to find a place where she belongs, learning how to control her powers, coming to see humans as worthy of being protected. SV Supergirl was also a lot more confident, fiercer and didn't hold back in using her powers. She had greats moments of saving/protecting her cousin, helping him in connecting with his family and just being there as someone whom he could relate too. She was one of my favorite parts of the show. Laura Vandervoort is my abolute favorite Supergirl.

  • EXACTLY!!! This KZheadr gets it, and before I even saw this video I also explained to other people how they wasted her potential and created a more boring female Superman. If they just stuck to her actual origin, basically, "What it must feel like to remember growing up in one's home society, surrounded by loving family, taught and trained under Krypton's philosophies and ideologies, and then for all of that to be stripped away in just a few minutes, from her prospective, to then be stranded on a back water planet. With a civilization WAY less advance both technologically and socially." That's maddening! It even would have been fine giving her and older Sister, someone to help her understand her alien peers, cause to her, we humans are the aliens. But don't erase this crucial crucial part of her character. You know who she relates to? Those children who come to states at 7 or 8 years old. Who need to quickly learn a new culture, language, etc. Some things remain the same while other things are majorly different. As a writer you can use Supergirl to speak on how she sees the petty issues that humans face on the daily. Just the levels of story telling is almost boundless. Her whole series should have Supergirl learning how to be more human, sometimes reluctantly and maybe even the humans around her learning how to be better people, by Supergirl showing them how little and petty our differences are as humans. Imagine a re-imagined season of the Daxamites come to Earth to force all humans to live more peacefully and Supergirl joins them, because she is sick and tired of most humans squabbling over religion, race, sex, and economic matters. But then a few episodes in she realizes that this authoritarian government is not as noble as she thought. And she was so consumed by her mission to do good and so sick of human squabbling, that she mistakenly trusted another race, which mimicked the benevolence that her Krypton society once had. Then after that season Supergirl would have to deal with the fall out of helping the Daxamites. She could also discover the Krypton wasn't as noble as she once thought, shattering her preconceptions that she had at 7 years old. And just the whole thing of balancing human life and her Kryptonian heritage. They even could have shaped the show to appeal to those people who are a little awkward but good hearted, who want to be popular but find themselves rejected many times, AND to those teens who are growing up fast and changing, and how this change is both bad, good, and scary. And how fluctuating emotions can be scary but it is also essential and what makes us human. If you are still reading this, thank you. I think you understand what I mean. So so much potential just wasted.

  • I haven't read any supergirl comics and holy shit did you describe a whole different character. Like, I knew that Arrow took Oliver Queen and made him Batman, so... yeah, don't know why I expected anything else... still. Batman and Superman are pretty cool. And I think takes away the big names that have been portrayed on screen so often, and using a different character was a valid strategy (economically speaking). So I get why they took of the names that cary high expectations and a bunch of properties to compare it with, but kept the super-marketable characters, simply under the veneer of another name. These shows clearly weren't written for the fans of the comics... and even I, who hasn't read the comics, can empathise with what a betrayal that is. So, in conclusion: (as someone coming in contact with the characters through this medium) this show, and other arrowverse shows with it, were pretty entertaining. (though Flash crashed and burned and died and got revived as a zombie that was kept alive in it's rotten form way beyond expiration, and so did most other shows, so I dropped most of them in later seasons...) tldr: I get why they did it money-wise. It's a shame that money comes first and art somewhere down the line if they have motivation for it...

She struggles to fit in, be accepted, do good, and we have to route for her. This one is just dumb. My first thoughts even from the first show... you were raised human from 12 to 20-something... and just let 12 years go by watching people die and not helping anyone? You must have a Krypton education so... you are don't help anyone you know like fusion or something? Yet your goal is to spend the next 30 years of your life... in entry level corporate America? Sure?!? Far better to just follow the source. She is an alien who just arrived, does not fit in, does not love humans or have strong ties, and the drama and conflict is her fitting in. It also means she doesn't need to have overpowered villains as a primary source of conflict, goofy alternate identifies, etc.

How on earth do these writers create such an interesting scenario and do absolutely nothing with it? That is so disappointing to see, not just failed potential, but completely wasted potential. You earned a sub for sure. Good, thorough and fun video. Also, I actually have to go look into some Supergirl comics because that actually sounded interesting.
