Perhaps not as glamorous as the fighters or bombers which were also captured and used by the Finnish Air Force, the Beriev MBRs and Shavrov Sh-2s which fell into the hands of the 'enemy' are nonetheless an interesting piece of history. Research for this video was done our resident Finnish Aviation expert, Enegene - it wouldn't be possible without him!

  • "Perhaps not as glamorous" is an understatement.

  • I'm honestly happy you made this video, the Finish MBR's history is rarely talked about and i tried and failed getting information ever since i saw カフェオレ selling them in their bigbird series of 1/144 scale models.

    • Yeah, it's definitely a pretty niche part of history, but cool nonetheless! Thanks for the support

  • Finnish air force history is really interesting! If you run out of ideas, the Blackburn Ripon, Gloster Gladiator, and the Westland Lysander have interesting histories in WW2 FAF

  • I actually quite like the Shavrov. Would like one for recreational flying.

    • Seems that's quite a common sentiment, as a few are still flying with private pilots. You could probably find one for sale!

  • Many seaplanes and flying boats have been developed and produced in the island nation of Japan. That is why we Japanese have a special romantic interest in Italian and German flying boats. I am grateful to you for digging up this little history of flying boats in a corner of Europe and introducing it to me.

    • Oh you're Japanese? I've actually desperately been looking for a native Japanese speaker to help with some primary Japanese documents I've got. Feel free to get in touch: aviationdeepdive@gmail.com

  • These remind me of the Pirate's aircraft in "Porco Rosso".

    • Director Hayao Miyazaki's love of reciprocating aircraft can be clearly seen in his drawings of planes from around the world. The various types of reciprocating military aircraft depicted by Japanese manga artist Reiji Matsumoto, famous for his ‘Le capitaine Albatol.’, are also very elegant and beautiful. Japanese children of my generation grew up reading their depictions of the drama of nameless soldiers on the fringes of the battlefields of Europe.
