BMW M57: Diesel's Best Kept Secret
So, while the US majorly lacks on the diesel car front as compared to the many other countries, the BMW M57 is a glimpse of what we could have if we adopted diesel cars.
The performance is great, the tunability is nearly on par with the N54, the reliability is superb especially for a BMW product, and efficiency blows BMW gas engines out of the water.
In the US we almost exclusively see diesel engines used in heavy duty applications like Ram trucks, GM trucks, Ford trucks, and so on.
While the M57 is vastly different than many of those engines, it certainly deserves more recognition as a well designed and powerful little engine that represents what German diesel engines are capable of as compared to American diesel engines.

Those m57 engines are like a piece of history for BMW. In Europe people with Nissan Patrol (and similarities) swap the engine for those m57 diesel ones. The torque of those engines are just so great

They are starting to become more common in Australia now as well, the patrol is one of the best 4x4s we have but the engines are garbage so the landcruiser has more of a following having the diesel v8.

The Mercedes OM606 diesel was another great engine too. Also known as the 2JZ of the diesel world.
It truly is an amazing engine, the only downside it has is the fact that it's an IDI engine instead of direct injection. But besides that, it might be (one of) the best diesel engines ever produced.

@@vladkruglov7719 for drifting you want wide PERCENTUAL powerband, not high rpm. This is why engines such as NA V8 LS is usually swapped into light chassis. This i just an example but 1000-4000 band is better than 4000-7000. With the right gear the 1000-4000 will pull from 40kmh to 160kmh, while the latter will only do 40kmh to 70kmh.
Had an E39 530d with the m57 and yeah this engine is a masterpiece. Awesome dynamics, economical, reliable, very smooth for a diesel engine like all and it sounds pretty decent as well.
It's still one of the best cars out there, also...lots of extras that some of the newer cars don't have.

That's the D30 without the piezo electric injectors, still a beast and is the better more reliable variant.
Had an E39 525d. Great car. Had 375000km on it when I sold it, and that is considered low as I see M57 E39’s with 500000km+ coming on for sale regularly. Only sold it because the rust started to get out of hand.. they love to use salt where I live. I’ve got a E61 525d LCI now with 230000km on it, hopefully I’ll be able to make that a high mileage hero too in a few years!

@@quadracer567 I've got an e53 with a m57. Started it in an underground parking lot the other day, got some weird looks from lady in the car parked in front. She had some audi with a gas engine and you only heard it ticking like a sewing machine. Stock M57 startup and idle is rather loud and quite glorious.
I had a straight piped 330d (N57) and it sounded incredible
My 335D is gutted, deleted, trans tuned, ecu tuned, flaps deleted, and it ran a 12.1. Stock turbos, stock injectors, and stock fuel pump. I’m upgrading to the R90 pump, larger injectors, hybrid turbos, and NOS next season.
Can I suggest a LPG or LNG kit ? It will result in more homogenous burn of your fuel limiting stress on the engine and extracting more energy out of the diesel you'll dump into the cylinder. Also if you will use liquid phase injection, you will get additional charge cooling allowing you to crank up the turbo even higher. Yes you will not get same power boost as a NOS, but you will be able to fill up 50L tank for less than a single bottle of NOS and use it on the daily basis making you ride cheaper and more efficient at the same time. Another side benefit is that when mixing with LNG / CNG it dramatically limits the soot output, so yeah, maybe you won't be able to do funny "running coal" but at least you'll be less likely to get in trouble with the fuzz.
Might want to look into dual pump setups, the R90 puts stress on the timing chain. A secondary R70/R90 is mounted via belt instead.

@@adam2jzzz801 I've ran a 12.2 @ 114mph in the 335d I had back in 2015. It was just deleted with some meth. Much easier to get those times now than back then.
I met a woman with an X5 35d the other day while fueling up. She and her husband both own M57 X5's, both have been extensively tuned and exhaust deleted. It sounded absolutely glorious when she pulled out.

Much needed video for the amazing M57
I got one in my x5. Really love it, you only touch it a bit and it flies. Only problem, you don't get the speed experience as a gasoline car. But for road trips it is really great
These cars are everywhere here in 🇬🇧 We have a ton of ‘performance diesel' cars here. Lots of people like the torque and boost when you get on it, and the calm low revs from the engine while cruising on motorways. It is turning over like on idle. This particular m57 engine from bmw is by far one of the best. Very easy to make big power with bolt ons and tune. Not hard to find these engines still very happy with 200k miles and up. The reliability is incredible.
Folks, I have 535d for 3 years. Now it has almost 400k km and a chip up to 350hp. I should say that it's very reliable engine and also 6hp28 transmission. Consumption is about 6L per 100km on the highway and 7-8L urban. Transmission can be easily remapped with original sport transmission software (equipped by default from 2008 and with 2TB option) or with xph. Both are great. Huge amount of torque already from 1300 rmp.

Shame you didnt mention the E46 and E39 in that list. The 330d and 530d can be real monsters. Theres a guy running almost 300hp and 750nm on a stock 3 liter in an E39 here. Real cool engines
I plan to get a tune from a very good guy here in germany, he can push the M57N (204hp) to around 270hp and, depending on how I like it, upwards of 600Nm of tourqe. The maximum with a few upgrades to the CR pump and injectors is around 400HP and around 1000Nm (which is plenty of tourqe). :D

@@y0Special i have driven quite a bit an e46 330d. gapped an f11 530d by a bit. both stock. lovely engine, and the chassis/stock suspension combo can handle pretty good drivers on the twisties. best bang for the buck car.
He didn't mention it because the only M57 worth tuning is the M57TU and M57TU2, if you want 300+HP it is cheaper to swap standard 184hp M57 with a M57TU than modifying it
I’m currently building E46 330xd (M57N) with easy map for 370-390 HP 750-800Nm (engine output), very reliable, non smoking setup. Keeping catalytic converter (high flow 100CPSI). “219” injectors, “R90” fuel pump, custom hybrid turbo, better valve springs, 3.5” down pipe, 3” exhaust, custom air intake with K&N cone air filter in place of washer fluid, custom aluminium washer fluid reservoir, Intercooler 600X300X76MM, custom high flow exhaust manifold. Possible output around 450-500HP and 1000Nm, but that would not very reliable for long trips and also high EGT without ethanol injection. So basically I’m aiming way below of possible tune, to keep it reliable, user friendly, passing exhaust fumes test for technical and road inspections. Also tinkering with longer gear ratios for higher comfort while cruising on autobahn. All mods to be done by best tune guys from Poland, then full high end car audio, sound deadening everywhere, from wheel arches, hood, firewall, floor, pillars including roof, acoustic windshield and arranging custom order for all glass to be acoustic and heat blocking all around - hopefully Pilkington or Saint-Gobain Sekurit can make it for me! Full undercarriage restoration including new Bilstein B12 Pro Kit, upgraded brake system, all polyurethane bushings, anti rust protection, very expensive Bi-LED lights so it won’t affect other users but will improve my vision by a lot, full detailing, ceramic coating, Styling 216 18” wheels on best UHP rubber etc, etc, still long long way to go :D

I've got a 335d. The transmission tune negates any slow shift complaints from me.
I have the Rod Sutphin tune on mine. It fixed 75% of what was lacking in the stock tune. The main part is the torque limiter allows for much more torque on gear changes that it feels closer to a stock ZF8 tune compared to the stock ZF6 tune.
Which tune do you have? Also, do you sometimes have a clunk between 2nd and 3rd gear?
@@991PDX You may want to search ZF6 solenoids, seals, sleeves, and/or valve body. Replacing one or a combo of those usually addresses symptoms such as what you're experiencing.
@@991PDX I had more a jolt between 2nd and 3rd when higher up in the RPM's. Did a full trans service replaced valve body and all solenoids and it has not shown itself since. Another common issue I've heard about these wonderful cars is the torque converters exploding when bumping the power up so that's something to be mindful of as well make sure your trans is getting proper maintenance.

We pull a vintage Airstream with out ‘12 X5 with all the works. It sounds awesome and the Mrs is constantly grinning at guys loving the sound of it. Super reliable once the goodies are on. And great MPGs

Great review. As an owner of a 2011 335d M Sport since 2013, I absolutely love my diesel sedan. The car is efficient, luxurious, quiet, handles exceptionally well for it's weight. It has been one of the most reliable BMW's I have owned except for the emission components, harmonic balancer, and glow plug module. They are guaranteed to fail around 100k or less unless your driving this car on the highway 90% of the time. The carbon buildup is a serious issue as well in stock form. Despite its shortcomings, the torque, horsepower and mileage are addictive and cannot be compared to any high performance sedans including M cars in the BMW lineup. Having deleted all the components that break down along with a reputable tune, the car is so much more reliable, quicker with improved fuel economy. BMW hit a home run on this motor but the EPA ruined the wallet experience.
You where lucky . You have no idea how many customers recieved bills upwards of 6 K to keep this engine running . In the end of the day economics killed this engine for the high mileage drivers . Also alot of welfare people own these now and yeah 😂🤣 i keep finding not even mechanics will buy this vehicle situations 😂😂

I have the e46 with stock 201hp engine, with some chip tuning and etc, is starts overheating - no problem, oil overheating - no problem, but how is said in the video biggest problem is the valve springs, flaps and for me have one more problem is fuel overheating. That you starting to feel after good burnout or small, short distance driving higher RPM. Very good explained in the video big like for you man!
For anyone with an e39 530D.. the turbo from an e60 530D is a lot bigger and bolt's straight up to the e39! Just file the corner off the engine mount bracket for clearance 👌🏼

Hi guys. i am a proud owner of a 2005 X5 E53 6 speed manual with the m57 engine. 218hp stock remaped to 295hp and 800nm. It is at 530k km and still going strong, no majore problems with the engine. Consumption is about 9.5L urban and 6-6.5L extraurban. Verry reliable engine. I highly recomend it. Congrats on the video. Verry precise and helpfull. Keep up the good work
Great video, you’re totally right about the M57 engine. Im in the US, What about the M57Y engine? I have an X5 35D 2011, all deletes have been done, active and passive def tanks are now methanol injection, Engine tune, trans tune, it’s an absolute rocket ship, with 35mpg. No idea what real power numbers are, but it seems happier without all the restrictions. Only problems I’ve ever had with it, are it eats water pumps even with upgraded metal impeller, and also thermostats. I’ve never seen a mechanical water pump actually explode, and eat both belts, several times. It seems they only can go for about 30k miles. I own several BMW’s and this one is my daily, commuter, about 1000mi per week. 160k miles total, and still puts a smile on my face. Most reliable BMW I’ve ever owned. It sounds like an old 7.3, but still luxurious inside, just keep the windows up at red lights, she got a lil coal outback.
Got an e39 530d, when I took it to the mechanic for a check up, he said this is the best engine I could have gotten for this model and/or generation. The m57 is timeless
Khmmm... The best are the M52`s. U can stroker it if u want, put an M50B25 intake manifold on it or u can fit ITBs. These period was all about NA petrol engines not turbo "traktor" engines. I am not saying the M57 its not a good engine but definitely not the the best.
Finally a wish fulfilled. This amazing engine needs to be known more.

Some points came to my mind. On the cylinder head N57 (not M57) engine pictured. Intake manifold swirl flaps are not plastic, they metallic with a rubber surrounding (N57 flaps are plastic). Regarding HP pump M57N2 (N=TÜ) does have CP3 R70 pump, but the previous M57N has CP3 R90. The pollution system on US versions is much heavier than on Euro versions which don't have low pressure EGR or SCR cat. I don't see piezo injectors problematic even though they can sometimes suddenly fail if the piezo element shorts internally. The speed and accuracy of piezos is superior compared to solenoid injectors.
This is THE MOST slept on diesel we got in america from a european brand. This past summer I went to Mexico for a bit and ended up running into 3 335d’s and an X535d and they were the coolest cars there without question. The stock one could keep up with a 2019 Accord Sport, and the most modded one was kicking 400 whp 700 lb ft. Boy was that thing quick. One of the coolest encounters i’ve had and turned me into these. It’s just too bad there are like 500 total in America
I drive a cayenne S, it has a 4.2liter V8 TDI audi engine, chipped to 455hp 950nm torq. 8-gear auto Transmission. Verry reliable. Its a beast. Seriously worth looking into but ill guess there aren't many outside of europe.
@@hansturpyn5455 Doesn’t really fit the bill of what I want to be honest, Diesels are at their best when it’s a straight six. No one does straight sixes like bmw so combine the two and it’s a recipe for something I’m bound to love. Plus my heart lies with the V10 toureg, id rather have that headache personally.

In Europe, we mostly drive diesels. In our family, we have had BMWs for long time. They have been very very reliable cars for most of the time. I used to drive E60 with M57 diesel, had it modified to 300+ hp while maintaing 850-1000km per tank. What a machine it was. Also dad used to have X5 with M57, prefacelift E70 30d, facelift E70 30d had been with N47, great car too but had carbon issue at 180k (covered under extended warranty). He has now X6 F16 40d - also great engine, 320hp. Those diesels are masterpiece of engineering. Not to mention 50d with 381hp by default.
All M57's after the M57D30TÜ 215hp/218PS 268hp/272PS are with an alluminium cylinder block, piezo-electric injectors and a weaker timing chain. I personally think that the most sought after engines are the 218PS and 272PS since they are the last engines which have a cast iron block, stronger timing chain and standard magnetic fuel injectors, that are not problematic as the piezo ones.
What about the 150kw/204hp engine that was in e46 face lift?
The aluminum block itself isn't a concern to me it makes the engine lighter and if it blows up at 1500nm and 700hp so what if you keep it civil the aluminum block should be fine. I honestly dont think there is a reason to go crazy with power tuning on an M57 they are powerful engines stock and I would be content with ~300hp. The aluminum block does have standard cast iron sleeves right? None of this plasmawelded on coating crap (they call it Nanosil I think)? Piezo Injectors are just crap I would certainly avoid those. They fail left and right. BMW just changed the current B57 back to standard magnetic injectors and it now has steel pistons instead of aluminum. Thats honestly a bit scary if I had a pre 2022 B57 I would want to know if my engine has inferior components because you dont just change pistons and Injectors for no reason.

This engine has been the base block for some Yanmar Marine engines for years. This is a proof of high reliability...
I gotta say I have the same engine in my BMW X5 35D and that thing I have a mild tune deleted egr cooler egr valve and scr deleted down pipe. And the thing sounds mean on cold start and sounds great on take off. 75mph cruise control set averages around 34-36mph on flat surfaces thats very good and I'm super happy with it.
I have an X5 2006 e53 with a M57, its simply a beast (350k km) averages 41 ~ 43 km/gal on highway .... egr delete & intake flap delete, added a extra oil cooler radiator and preparing to change to a cp3 pump (still have some leaks of oil here and there... normal on a BMW), but it still rocks, Im not a mechanic, but im the one that services the engine so far (6 years) .
I've got an 2005 e61 535d, with the older 272hp cast iron block m57d30tutop, some say its better, less problems with the chain, better cooling, r90 fuel pump as standard, just as easy to tune, and sounds great with the right exhaust. The only issue I see with them, is the lack of LSD, which costs about 1000-1200$
How and why is the cooling better if I may ask?
@@GoldenCroc i am not a 100% sure how, but something to do with the oil distribution, and the fact the aluminum block is easier to overheat, as well as if one of the injectors fails, it burns a hole in not just the piston, but the block aswell.

And the US they only made about 12,000 of the 335D, I have a 2010 sport and haven't enjoyed a car this much in a while, one of the best all around vehicles in my opinion, simple delete with a downpipe and tune on methanol, makes 370 WHP and 580 torque without meth injection. I'm at 208k miles and get about 42 MPG average, highest was 52 MPG on a full highway trip

@@Wickit96 that's top tier! I recently ran a 11.9 quarter in my mk7 GTI stock turbo on e55 w/ meth, pulls like a horse on meth. If I was rwd I could only imagine what time I'd put down. You reckon you'd gain a few tenths on meth? I find it more consistent
@@roboticvenom1935 surprisingly I haven't done any with the meth kit on, it would leak from the line and I didn't want to have it all over the track or have the line let go and make it even worse, so I'm excited to see how it does when I go back
@@Wickit96 When I ran meth vs no meth at the 1/4mi I gained about 4-5mph trap. This was with a 2011 deleted 335d with a BPC tune and 100% methanol back in 2015. 12.2 @ 114mph was my best run.
owned a e60 535d,e61 530d and e92 335d ,currently running a 335i ,i miss that m57 engine so much power from low down
Some addition: - 306D1 and 306D2 have 24kg weight crankshaft, all the newer have 20kg crankshaft. With this much weight difference the revving is faster in the newer, but this is the thing why D1 and D2 doesn't really break the timing chain, and newer models do. - In all the M57 versions the crankshaft's idler bearing is fitted in precisely and metal supports metal, not just the bolts holding it in place, and this feature keeps the crankshaft away from vibration, so crankshafts won't break. - In E39 and I think E46 the automatic gearbox (made by GM) can't keep up against any tune, remap, or anything, it's barely enough for the stock torque. The manual gearbox of M57 is a very massive reliable one, usually used in 2JZ Supra builds.
I have a e39 530d with the original m57 193hp and it just runs to the moon and back. Its not the best for power but in stock or little tuning it just works.

I have M47 in my 2006 320d E90 saloon and my 2006 E91 320d M Sport. Very efficient and reliable engines that perform amazingly well with just a basic remap. They are annoying to work on, just to change the air filter or crank case breather is a pain in the ass as you have to remove a load of stuff.

Tis a heavy lump, particularly the cast iron block. My e91 would chew through the tyres and bushes up front like fire and warp brake discs for fun, don't get me started on the understeer. Over the last couple of years I've worked at getting the front end planted, Bilstein B6's, Eibach springs, 245s on 9Js, Proxes sports, 335 brake conversion, fully poly bushed.. A different animal now. Mapped at 600nm, six speed manual, bigger SACHs clutch, she goes well for a nineteen year old car, Ive never once felt like I'm desperate for more power. I drop the oil out every 5k and she just keeps going. A truly legendary engine.
I am in Australia and have owned an Aug. 2007 X3 3.0d for nearly 7 years. It has the M57 engine with the aluminium block. It only has the single turbo, as opposed to the 3.0sd model. It has been an extremely reliable and economical car for me to date. I have had the swirl flaps removed and replaced with blanks on the advice of my mechanic (not BMW dealership but BMW expert). I currently have the intake manifold removed and am in the process of thoroughly cleaning it. I found the EGR valve, situated just behind the throttle body on the intake manifold with about 1cm of baked on carbon and oil around the inner edges. I have cleaned it and intend to reinstall it . I was considering to carry out an EGR delete but not only is it an illegal modification but results in other issues such as more DPF contamination. This engine is also fitted to the X5 which is a much heavier vehicle than my X3. I may get the engine remapped in the future but in its current form it has more than enough power for my needs. The car has only 153,000km on the clock and I intend to keep it for the longer term. The 2 liter N47 BMW 4 cylinder diesel engine is the one to avoid.
I have an e90 325d (yes, 3 litre) m57 since new in 2007. 164k miles, still pulls like a train. Love it. Edit: and I still get almost 50mpg out of it.
Watch our for timing chain tensioners !! Mine M57 died because some batch was done with less quality material. At that time engine was on stock tune. I have had E60 525xd, also 2007 facelift model - 145kw stock.
@@p2p104 Thanks for the tip. I have an ex BMW mechanic who does all my major jobs (do my own servicing) and he doesn't seem concerned, but I'll ask next time I see him. The timing chain is at the front isn't it? If so doing the work shouldn't be too hard for him.

Nice to see that the US also care for the diesel engines :) personaly I'm driving an 435d (320PS, no adblue). It's a shame that the very best engines you don't mention (they don't exist over sea?) it's the 50D, the old one is a 3l block with 3 turbos generating 380ps and the new one has 4 turbos an generates 400PS and lots of torque :)
I drive a 435d too, it's nice the m57 is getting recognition from the USA but the n57 in the 435d is something else. Same positives mentioned in the video but even more. Mine is stock with a tune and runs a 12.05 quarter
I have a 2015 x5 35d now {owned over 40 cars personally) and this is by far the best... Super smooth, unreal power... Four adults and gear, and you fly up hills like your in a sports car. And the mileage, 8.6l per 100km... And that's city driving!
I have an E46 330D which has the M57D30 engine, and I can tell you it is an amazing piece. It has been tuned from 184 to around 250HP (I bought it tuned, don't know the power figure exactly) and whilst being quite quick it still manages to get me about 50mpg on the highway. Amazing..... And realiability, it's great. Only the automatic transmission is kinda bad because E46 diesels had a GM trans instead of the more reliable ZF trannies which I kinda wanted hahah
n54 owner in the US, aint never lost to no 335d... but they are cool. a can tuned stage 1 335d is around the performance level of a stock n54, and a healthy fbo stock twins n54 will roll off on anything the stock cp3 can put to the tires. Just putting that out there, sure its sort of in the ballpark and it might beat a stock/gate rattling n54 on a 60 roll... but lets be real here. If you want 600whp you are better off on an n54, simply due to the parts availability/cost here. A 600whp 335d setup will be a ton of labor/custom parts, probably cost a total of 2-3x the equivalent n54 build from stock to goal.

@@maltepettersson3083 the n54 does that too. The limitation isn’t connecting rod size, because it can spin a higher rpm it doesn’t need to make the insane torque the m57 needs to make to create 600hp. A stock bottom end n54 will do 650whp all day with good cooling / setup.

Rode mine e39 530DTA 99 to 700dkm, the original turbo went out. So I sold it to demolition company. They repaired it with a second hand turbo and was sold again in 2 weeks… Great engine!! The automatic ZF gear was also good built.. Saw the m57 engine in some Toyota 4x4 😂 vids on yt
Love mine! 2014 F34 here in the UK, has been tuned along with the ZF8, the shifts are almost as quick as my previous DSG equipped Cupra 290 so have no complaints. Does all the lazy comfortable stuff very well but now with 572lbs/ft at disposal, it feels very potent when pushing on. Will likely fit hybrid turbos very soon, should see in the region of 450hp then, maybe more if I remove the DPF. Long live the mighty M57 😂
You have the N57 not the M57...
Your one is the N57 not M57. N57 is okay but not as good as the. The N57 has the timing chain mounted at the back like the N47 4 cylinder. While the N57 doesn't have as much timing chain problems as the N47 4 cylinder they can still occur on the N57 (as its a N47 with 2 extra cylinders) which is a pain as the timing chain is mounted at the back. N57 is decent but M57 is alot better.
great video, can you cover the toyota KD and GD 4 cylinder diesel engine? i know its not available in the north america (and maybe didn't make sense to be sold in the us as far as i'm concerned) but its a great engine with stock internals that can withstand double or triple stock horsepower on a daily basis

U forgot to mention the Opel Omega B2, that has an M57D25 (150HP ,300Nm factory) that was only built for this very car by BMW :)
GM used this engine (M57D25) in the Opel Omega B2 (GM code Y25DT) wich is simelar to the Cadillac catera. And BMW got from GM the GM5LE40 automatic transmission.
And I hate that GM transmission. :D I have a 25d with it, noone knows them, noone knows the real torque limit. Someone says, 360nm, someone says 410nm, someoen says it doesnt matter till u change the oil. Someone says the wandler is the weak part. I wanna tune my E39 to 200hp/400nm, but the tranny is always the question and I dont wanna buy a new one after the chip
And I hear on forums GM box is sh1te, instead choosing ZF, because of taking more torque and running cooler.
These engines are incredible! There's a triple turbo version of this engine that's closer to 400bhp, it came in the 550d and X5 M50. They can also be remapped up to 30% more than standard.
I am going to buy a 330d e93 231hp sporting the M57 engine tomorrow. Adding it to my BMW/CanAM collection. My other BMW has a N47 technical update engine, really strong even though Ns are usually crap, haven't had any issues thus far, I have 250k km on it.
My M57 170kw bmw e91, great economy, great pull, great sound + manual gear box, what more I can say it pulls like a train.😎
i have exactly the same car but with Xdrive M-sport also manual. Just all the deletes and downpipe + tune its awsome :D
450k on mine 400hp 600trq. From a roll nothing keeps up. Piston 5 cracked in 2020, did a r&r myself and I will continue to reach 300kmph😏. Any other BMW won't be this reliable. And oh ya 45mpg avg

You should've mentioned that the e9x platform has both m57 and n57 diesel engines. The n57 comes with timing chains in the back end of the engine rather than front. Also the timing chains are way weaker than m57's timing chains. The 330d and 335d has m57 up until 2007 and the facelift model has n57. Also there's also one interesting fact that the 325d has m57 in all of the models, facelift or not. Also 525d 530d and 535d have a m57 with cast iron block up until 2005 or 2006, and the 3 series didn't get a motor with cast iron block. Only e46 3 series platform has cast iron block engine in 330d's.

Yup, best ones are the M57 184/193hp versions(e46/e39) & the M57N with in e46 & prefacelift e9x with 204/218hp respectively. They can handle quite a bit. The M57 & M57N are totally different animals though.

I've got an X5 with a M57N, 218hp, no DPF, no swirl flaps from factory. Getting around 23-25 mpg around town.
Just to clarify it is NOT sequential turbo, it is infact Compound turbo. big difference, great vid!
To my understanding, this system is relatively unique in the fact that it can be both style systems. The small turbo can feed the engine directly and bypass the larger turbo entirely or feed the larger turbocharger, depending on the position of the compressor bypass valve. Because the smaller turbo doesn't exclusively feed the larger turbo and can feed the engine itself, this system is referred to as sequential and not compound. If the bypass valve didn't exist and the smaller turbo fed the larger turbo under all circumstances, then this system would be referred to as compound. If anyone has any links or docs to BMW sourced information on what this turbocharger system is referred to as I'd love to check it out.

@@Dustrunnersauto all small turbo air input comes trought big turbo cold side. theres no bypass. Same is with exhaust. All exhaust gasses goes to small turbo, witch goes to big turbo then. Theres no cutout, but if big turbo is switched "on" gasses still goes trought small turbo, but since big turbo is more free, gasses naturally prefere big turbo. Only cutout is then, when big turbo is fully switched on , then airpresure bypasses small turbo. It is not cut out, but small turbo is mostly bypassed.

i'm in UK and I had a 2009 E92 335d auto a few years ago, Had DPF and EGR removed, straight piped, air filter and remap on both engine and gear box. It was dyno'd at 342bhp and 570nm, and it felt so rapid! I later added a quaife differential which transformed the handling and drift ability. I really regret selling that car!!

Had an X5 35D. When the emissions systems failed I was faced with a choice. Chose delete, including the swirl flaps. Tuned the ECM mildly; turned the dyno at 364 hp and 590 ft/lbs at the wheels on a hot humid day. 25 mpg plus having all the fun I wanted. Can you say launch? Put 100k miles on in 4 years driving everywhere. And the sound?? Just awesome.
The L322 Range Rover also used the M57, chipped and at 350.000km's doing just fine so far, great tow vehicle too

The block and crankcase of the TÜ2 and TOP engines are both made of aluminium. It was a later design which took effect in the e60 LCI models especially. It’s also worth mentioning, the TOP engines are equipped with the Bosch R90 high pressure fuel pump not the R70.

Been daily driving an e46 330d for the last 4 years and its time for me to get something different, how ever, i find it basically impossible to move away from bmw diesels. For a dd car, its basically the perfect engine. Quiet, smooth, reliable and economical for every day use, yet still powerful and fun enough for when you feel like pushing it. Been looking at various cars and e90 335d seems like the obvious choice for a direct upgrade (Only thing im torn on is moving to an auto, but thats more of a me problem). Literally every alternative i look at (v8 s5, 350z, impreza wrx etc) both consume 2-3x more fuel well being noticeably slower (at least in a straight line).
Owned two M57 powered BMW 3 series. 330d 204ps tuned to 265ps and later 335d 286ps tuned to 356ps. Best cars in my life and i miss M57 everday.
The M57 is the king of the mid-sized oil burners. Last of the they don’t like them like that anymore BMW motors as well. Went downhill in the early days of N-series motors, especially the early N47 4pot motors with their chocolate cam chain drives which chewed chains. The intake swirlers was a known issue on all the M-series diesels (4&6 cyl) but manageable. Sold my M Sport diesel Beemer to move to the UAE. Running some big cc cars here but the only one that comes close to the punch of a big diesel is the supercharged Raptor. Love the big twin turbo oil burners whilst you can. 🥰

I've got to agree on the statements when it comes to engine reliability. As the proud owner of a 2012 BMW M550d (381PS and 740Nm and this is stock figues. Easy stage 2 tunes gives you roughly 450PS and upwards of 1000Nm, the fuel consumption is nothing to be scared at. Even though diesel prices have increased substantionally in Norway the past 2 years. Indeed things might get expensive when things break, not to mention 1 of the 3 turbos.. But the car gives so much joy and excitement that I would not trade it for anything else. And again, where do you go from here? Great informational video, good work!

I have the E61 535d pre LCI tuned, stock engine, but no EGR (engine breaths nicely) and DPF deleted. Not sure how much power it makes, but does 0-100km/h (0-62 mph) in 4.8, if it doesn't lose traction, which rarely happens. It does a quarter mile in 12.8s. If I floor it in a rain at 130km/h, it loses traction when it kicks down.
