  • As a blacksmith, thank you for shedding light on just how long the polishing process can take. The difference is inversely exponential, so as you get to those higher grits and such, it's really hard to tell the difference. This sometimes meaning going from grinding to filing to dry sanding, then wetsanding to polishing numerous times with different compounds, wheels, and techniques. I'm only an amateur blacksmith, and my work sometimes sees 10+ finishing techniques, so I can't even imagine how many a master gunsmith might use.

    • Polishing helps not only asthetically but functionally. If you have a mirrored slide rail, it's going to have less friction, and wear out less fast, than a 36 grid rough slide that scrapes the lower receiver rails. Same with a knife. Less friction makes easier cuts, and extends the duration of your blades sharpness. I'd assume for high carbon steel it also makes more rust resistant. Having less tiny divots and pores in the steel would mean less areas for rust to form and pockets to retain moisture. That's just my perspective, I'm no scientist 😂 Good luck brother enjoy your rare and badass craft!

    • @@3vanguardofthephoenix335 higher polish sctuslly reduces a knives edge retention. It doesn’t make sense but that’s what the data snd actual use say. Also, friction would be reduced by having a super rough surface finish. A mirror polished blade will bind up in cheese for example, than a knife with a rough texture. It’s what makes the natural forged finish on knives actually functionally desirable. Almost everything about knives is like the opposite of what you’d assume.

    • @@realwelder3529 I have a RIA two-tone "Rock Series" 1911 and it's been absolutely amazing for a $500+ firearm... When I got it, I ordered it online (cheaper) and had it transferred to a small, local gunshop (that has since gone out of business) - it was owned by a relatively young Army veteran who was trying his hand at becoming a gunshop owner and half-assed gunsmith ... I remember picking it up and him telling me, "I'm not going to lie to you, when I saw the order, I thought 'oh look, another fuckin idiot buying a cheap imported gun, how quaint... AND THEN I took it out of the box and saw it and messed around with it and couldn't believe it ... the slide-to-frame fit was like something out of a magazine! Never seen such build quality, I was blown away!" - I guess the deal is , the Philippines gun industry has very, very skilled builders and craftsmen working in the gunshops ... and I read that if the average Amercian-build gun has 1, at most 2 hours worth of "human hands" attention, the Filipinos spend 10-20 hours hand-fitting parts, adjusting and blending and tuning the guns in ways that you'd have to spend $1000s on semi-custom to custom 1911s in the USA. Just saying, I love mine.

  • I can definitely say that the cheaper ones are surprising as far as the 1911 goes. I have a Tisas 1911A1 from Turkey, and it's one of the most dependable guns I've ever taken to the range. I bought it brand new in the box for around $380 a few years ago, and while the price has gone up a bit since then, I think it's still less than $500. The weight and recoil is nearly identical to more expensive ones, as well as the contours and the way it rests and points. It's not the brand, or the price tag, it's the design of the 1911 itself. The 1911 is such a perfectly designed gun that it's hard for manufacturers to mess it up. My tisas has been my EDC since the first time I took it to the range, and I honestly can't ever see myself shelling out $2000 or more for something that isn't much different overall.

  • I got the RIA 1911-A1 because it was my first foray into 1911 and I love it. Budget friendly and effective. Good job Rock Island Armory! Fun fact RIA got the designs for the OG colt model and gave it to their manufacturers in Philippines to make it and if you know the history of the 45 acp ammo, you’ll know why that’s ironic or poetic Justice etc.

  • I don't care what the Kimber lovers say. If that $500 handgun can go BANG every time with any brand of .45 ammo, that's good enough for me. My .45 is actually a Heckler & Koch USP partly because the external functions are very similar and it was the cheapest .45 handgun in the whole store. The store owner test fired it when he got it and said it was ridiculously easy to put 2" groups on a target at 50 feet. I was sold and walked out the door with the USP. It is comfortable, easy to shoot and very reliable. The odd dual spring in the recoil rod does work. It soaks up a LOT more recoil than a regular one. I would recommend the USP if you want something different but still in .45. And yes, it's accurate enough to remind me that I don't practice enough with it, LOL...

I've fired friends high end 1911's and borrowed a RIA from a buddy while we were hunting in Montana for a side arm. I'm my experience (and I emphasize that) I had more memorable malfunction in the high end and no issues I could recall on the RIA. With that said I think that maybe I was a little more critical on the high end ones about their malfunctions because they did cost more. I feel I may have had lower expectations on the RIA. With that said, I got the RIA for my collection, love it, works great. All I can say for certainty, in a collection it is the appreciation of the tool and all of its quirks, regardless the cost. Thanks again for another great video!

  • I have the Rock standard 1911.. over 1000 rounds and no misfires. Initially had a sticky mag ejection, but was rectified by Armscor as warranty. The only issues ever encountered was a few FTE using aluminum casing. Bot in 2014 $500. the Wilson Combat mag works well also, in addition to the provided mag by Armscor. The ProMag brand didn’t do well, and had issue of gun slide not staying open after last cartridge was shot. I’m happy with this piece.

Shoots flawless. I've shot the Kimber, Wilson and others, very nice but glad I saved myself a couple grand. If I had to use it as a duty gun, I might (big might) consider the Kimber or another gun. Some time later got a Colt Government model (.38S). World apart in feel and finish. But I never stopped appreciating my Rock because it introduced me to 1911s. If all I ever saw were $900-and-up from brands I would have trusted I would have wondered what all the fuss was about and may have overlooked the 1911 as an option. Now I keep an eye out for the right Colt in .45 but even when I get it, I'll never get rid of that Rock.
