Comparing two iconic platforms! How they handle and what's probably the better all-around choice! The AK is specifically a Chinese Type 56 Spiker, and John's M16A1 is wearing a carbine-length upper and short stock when we do this video.

  • I was in Vietnam in 1968 and 1969. I was a recon patrol leader and used the M16 and CAR15. The M16 had all the bugs out of it by the time I used it. It was dependable if you kept it clean. It was light and easy to wield in the heavy bush. You could carry a lot of ammunition for it because the ammunition was light. At one point I carried 600 rounds, and, yes, that much is heavy but doable. It lacked range. That was the only drawback. Beyond 400 meters the 223 lost its punch and in the central highlands of Vietnam, we needed a quick light rifle for close work and a rifle that could reach out across ravines and valleys to, say, 800 meters or so.

He had his M-16 slung while dropping the mortar round. The round hit the M-16 barrel, continued downrange hit the ground and exploded, as you might expect. Well my Marine had a contusion from the sling being pulled away from his shoulder. He was black and blue for a couple of weeks, there were no other casualties except the armorer! I do believe he is still crying. Well sir, the barrel of that M-16 took an angle of about ninety degrees give or take a few degrees, rendering the weapon “unserviceable”. That means the M-16 could not be saved! Thank you for the videos. I enjoy them immensely! Keep up the good work, sir.

    • And AR has only 1 moving part in the partial disassembly - a bolt, and a handle. So, it is a much simpler design than AK in service disassembly, it takes less than 10 seconds to take apart M16 for partial disassembly, 3 times longer for AK, not to mention that you can replace a barrel of AR/M16 right in the trenches if needed, but AK barrel is pressed in and so cannot be replaced in the field. You got F for the ability to count rifle parts, and for a knowledge of both rifles design difference.

  • Hey Hickok ! Shot quite a bit in Switzerland close to where I live, many great shooters and gun lovers over here just like you in the US ! Both platforms are much beloved here and owned by many. Their older service rifles are high caliber and a blast to shoot, though many also love the AR too, they are made by Sig, by HK, the american-made are rarer but quite the collection piece. Sadly too many M4s here are cheap Norinco knock-offs, the real OGs are highly sought after ! I have a weak spot too for cold war oldies, high powered rifles, but love me an AR anyday and also your great .45 caliber ! Thanks for the full auto showcase as it's quite the sight and pretty rare, even in the french army firing full auto with the FAMAS was discouraged as its rof is too high so it left the barrel blue and we didn't get a lot of spares ! We relied upon the belgian-made Minimi for that, I think the US military calls it the M249, awesome weapon and very lightweight for it's punch. The M16 seems more controllable than the FAMAS, no wonder why nowadays they replaced them with 416s anyway. It is a bit of a shame, any newbie could shoot reliably at 300 meters with it, and the old hands up to 800 meters easily, lightweight and compact, never jammed on me either except firing blanks. The AKM and the OG Armalite are both legendary firearms in any case, keep it up !

  • Let me start by saying that I grew up in a house full of weapons. My father was an Air Force pilot. I served with the Marines. When I was in boot camp I was issued the M16/A1. I absolutely loved that weapon. It was a lightweight and a very accurate RIFLE. I Came across the Ak47 years after I left the Marines, while I was with the "contras" in Latin America. I immediately realized that these two weapons were not even in the same category. The Soviet Union designed the Ak47 as a fully automatic fire suppression platform much as the PPSH was. The M16/A1 was a rifle with an intermediate cartridge, but it was still a rifle. And this is why you can't compare "apples & oranges." The Ak goes from safe to auto, the M16 from safe to semi. What I found is that in a jungle environment, the Ak is far better. Why? Besides reliability, the 7.62x39 doesn't tumble when it hits branches or foliage the 5.56 does. That's my experience.

I had the A4 in 11B and 11C OSUT (went through Basic twice), which is as far as my military career went, but we put at least 100 live rounds and a ton of blanks through it per cycle in '06, and I didn't have a single jam between either of them. Those things were as reliable as the sunrise. Ditto for my home rolled rifles I have now, which are put together with a range of parts from budget to mid-tier. I remember having to take apart my C7 rifle to clean it with all its small parts in the bolt, that could get lost. I own an SKS, which is similar to the AK and how simple it is to clean is alot better especially if you are out in the field, especially when you are doing so at night under cover with red light.

While I was sad to see my M4 go to a POG unit because it was a really good rifle my M27 was insane. The accuracy was amazing, durability was off the charts, yeah the barrel was a little longer but it’s still very manageable in CQB when you train with it, I didn’t really notice much of a difference. • Ergonomics on AKs are different but not worse than those of the AR. The issue most Americans have is that they go with the more traditional upright stance whereas the AK demands you to take a far more aggressive and modern forward stance. It REALLY requires you to not be afraid to practically plant your face to the receiver. Once you get that down, it’s just as controllable as an AR, in fact I would argue it’s more controllable if you happen to be someone with a smaller frame. I would also argue that the AK’s manual of arms are easier for a novice shooter than those of the AR.

    @AFreakinProblem@AFreakinProblem8 ай бұрын
    • I would beg to differ on the ergomonics part; There was a series a channel by the name of "the wound channel" had made that he since deleted from his channel (but not before it was archived) where he would take brand new and inexperienced shooters, and challenged them to load (including loading rounds into the magazine), aim and shoot both an AK and an AR without instruction. It eventually changed to various other guns, but the first few involved only those two rifles. Of the 3 or 4 people he tested, all figured out how to operate the AR far faster than the AK, with the AKs biggest obstacle being the stiff safety most eastern bloc produced AKs have and figuring out how to insert the magazine properly. The AR just has objectively better and more intuitive ergonomics than the AK does, which is why everybody is copying its ergos vs the AK.

The sacrifice is the AK is heavier and (generally) has looser tolerances during manufacturing. Ammo tends to be cheaper in the AK, but you gamble reliability Being the proud owner of an AK, I can say that it will eat any ammo you put through it (brass, steel, rusty steel, hollow point, ball, soft point) and it doesn't seem to care. Months of humidity and sweat would corrode the the mag well because that's where guys were holding it when firing. Once the 601 was officially adopted as the M16 a TDP (Technical Data Package) was developed which greatly increased durability. • Yeah, i wouldn’t rely on video games as the best sources of knowledge and information on firearms lol. Kind of like not relying on a game like fornite to teach you how to build a house or something. As far as gta goes, you would think the 5.56 m4/AR is a stronger, more powerful cartridge and firearm bc of how the game presents them since they make the AK a weaker rifle. And that’s is the complete opposite of the truth. The 5.56 cartridge doesn’t have S*** on 7.62. Plus the AK rifle itself, is the bigger beast

    • In FO4, I have to use mods to adjust the rate of fire for the handmade(AKS) and M4 mods because either they fire too fast or too slow compared to their real counterparts. Sound mods for them also add a neat immersion of realism. But yeah, one can hear the difference, for example, in a Type56 cycling at a realistic 550 rpm vs 700 rpm. Getting the cycling rates right on any gun is just satisfying to listen to.

      @glidershower@glidershower8 ай бұрын
    • @@jakeh6980The 7.62 does indeed deliver more energy, but the 5.56 is better at piercing armor. Depending on the system you use them in, there's also the occasional unintended tumbling of the 7.62 bullet as it travels, making it easier for armor to resist, but devastating any unarmored targets getting hit with it. They're different bullets that accomplish different tasks one better than the other, leaving the choice of which is better up to the user. I'm fond of the 7.62 for my jack rifle, altho I avoid surplus soviet ammo due to its corrosiveness. But it (well, used) to be cheap to get in bulk lolz.

  • An old vet told me the difference between the 5.56 (M-16) and the 7.62x39 (AK) bullet was; the 556 was like a Ferrari very sleek and fast, but if it hit a tree limb would be all over the place… whereas the AK round was like bulldozer, big, heavy, strong, and would push the freakin tree down…

  • Carried the M16 A1 during my time (1986-'89) in the 1st Cav.Div , 2/8th Cav Ft.Hood Tx. Assigned to a M1 Abrams Tank unit as a medic , our small arms were of the older inventory . The Infantry usually had the newer weapons . Just to give you an idea , I remember an Abrams loader carrying around an old M3 "grease gun" . IDK how old my M16 was but it was old , beat up , had a cracked handguard , and it rattled . However , I don't remember that rifle ever malfunctioning . In-fact , what I do remember is that it was reliable and accurate as hell . So chalk one up for the ol' M16 !

  • AK wasn’t actually based off the STG and has basically nothing in common with it mechanically. It instead was based off the M1 Garand (actually mentioned in Kalashnikov’s notes) and has clear influence from other American and Russian rifles, most notably the Remington Model 8. The only similarity the AK has to an STG is (maybe) it’s silhouette and the two of them can kinda fill the same role. The AR rifles however have a lot in common with the STG and even takedown similarly.

  • That's true with the AR. Once you have the manual of arms down in your mind it's just well thought out and intuitive. You feel when the bolt locks back on the last round. That being said it has tight tolerances and there's no such thing as a firearm that never malfunctions and if you stove pipe or double feed an AR, sometimes it jambs up real hard.

  • I carried an M16 in the Air Force from 1975 - 1985. Never once did I have a failure, but I worked with several guys who were in Viet Nam who complained about them. Most all of them said they wanted the M1 or would want an AK. I understood they're concern and you voiced it when you said they were released too soon. But, like I said, I never had a problem with my M16 as a Security cop and I've had several AR-15s by Colt, Ruger, and Bushmaster as a civilian. Didn't have any problems with any of them either. I've fired Russian AKs, and many others and they're okay. I just don't like them nearly as much. So, good review on both guns and you nailed the observations just as good as us military guys in my opinion.

  • There are videos of the AR performing better than the AK after being pulled out of the mud, turns out the tighter tolerances of the AR help prevent the ingress of mud. I have chosen the AR over the AK for several reasons but the main one is versatility, one lower receiver can be easily converted to different calibers by simply changing the upper receiver.
