  • This is a very nice tool for diagnosing, using live data to diagnose issues and can program modules also. I plan on getting this in the future. Do you know if you can still use it after the updates expire? I know it'll read codes but will it perform "programming/coding" functions even if the update license is expired? That way it's not a brick after 2 years. Thanks

    • I believe after the subscription expires you can still do the special functions under the "service function" menu but not anything that is labelled "online". Many of the coding functions are online coding but really this tool has very limited coding options compared to the higher priced ones around £1000. There's no programming (module flashing/updating) functionality at all. It's worth having a look at other brands as some have longer subscription included (e.g. otofix) and others have a cheaper renewal fee after the subscription expires (e.g. xtool). The main issue I've found with these budget import scan tools is it is a lottery as to what functions are going to work properly on what cars, the manufacturers do publish feature tables by vehicle but even these can be inaccurate in my experience and many times you will find basic features like DPF regen or window reg recalibration don't work, sometimes even the active tests ("bi-directional controls") don't work or don't show up, but it's highly vehicle dependent, so until you try it, you won't know. It's not a limitation of the vehicle, as the same features do then work on another tool or the manufacturer's own tool. They are still excellent value for reading fault codes and reading live data though, and this clearly where most of the development effort has gone.

    • @@ekens6344 You're right about these scanners not being able to perform all the function on all cars, even when it says a function was carried out successfully it doesn't actually tell you that it failed. I'll def lookup otofix, looks like they're using Autel software.

  • The problem with all OBD readers is the errors are based on limited information at times. A work colleague had an oxygen sensor replaced 4 times as the fault kept saying that the O2 reading was way too high so must be a sensor fault. In the end an old machinic asked the technician what was that sound coming from the engine and what did it indicate. Then he pointed out that with an air leak that replacing the sensor would not fix the leak. :-) but replacing the air hose would fix the sensor overreading the O2 level. the main problem was the ECU could not hear the leak and the tech just did what the error code reported. they forget how much time they wasted the owner having his car back there 4 times in 2 months.

    • like all things the displayed diagnosis is not always the answer and you read the fault you first need to know how the fault is caused, and parts sellers love the uninformed 🙂

    • @@fredflintstone1 but old school mechanics are dieing out, I had a young mechanic telling me my ignition coil needed replacing as its resistance was out of tolerance. I asked him what did the ticking sound coming from the non running engine indicated, the measurement should have been done at 20C , I had to explain that the readings will be different if the engine was hot and cooling down. Ìf I was not there they were going to replace it at £90. This was at a main dealer. Doing the test at 20C was in caps on the test sheet he was proudly waving in my face. The problem there was no OBD port so he was trying to work it out for himself. God knows how much his learning experience cost customers with replacement parts that weren't required. Signed OBOG, (One Bitter Old Git) :-)

    • OBD readers aren't designed to give you a code to replace a part, it just tells you hey something is out of spec here. You then use a tool like this or many others to use live data to read o2 sensor value and actually find out if it's bad or it's reading properly and something else is wrong.

      @justfasial01@justfasial012 ай бұрын
    • it's also the information provided by the car manufacture on how to use the data recovered, which in this case was to replace the sensor as it was reading so high it must be at fault. hence they changed 3 of them and about to change it for the 4th time. remember nowadays they are just parts fitters and have issues when the computer says No 🙂. @@justfasial01
