  • An issue with placing the esp32 near the base is that the antenna is next to the DIN rail which is usually grounded, and you can't know what other DIN rail mounted modules will be installed next to the device. Best practice is to have either an externally mounted rp-sma connector or use a right angle board mount to bring the ESP32 and it's antenna to the surface of the faceplate. This could also remove the need for light pipes.

    • I will generally be using the u.fl version of the module with an external antenna or an adhesive internal antenna

  • 8:10 Steve, have you considered making some custom LED light pipes? You can get pretty good results 3D printing the whole assembly using transparent PETG filament or you could print LED sleeve couplers and use short lengths transparent PETG filament as fibre optic light guides.

    @SimonCoates@SimonCoates5 ай бұрын
    • I failed last time with PETG. I might try again, or maybe with the resin printer.

  • I finished a similar thing this week :P ESP32S3 ( with HA configurations for all the modes , 5 -80V input, because sometimes it gets hooked up to a solar battery stack at 58V) the S3 USB peripheral has both USB-CDC and JTAG so it makes programming easy, it could use another revision tho

  • I did the same thing with a esp-12 some years back. Would have liked to take power from the mains as they go in the consumer unit but convinced myself it was silly and didn't want to take the risk in the end.

  • I'd love one of those vac component placers (is that the JBC one?).... actually, I'd love to be making enough pcbs to warrant getting one!

    • It's my DIY device. Someone was going to make one that was easy to build this year and send it to me for testing, but it didn't happen. If they gave up, I'll design a new version

      @sdgelectronics@sdgelectronics5 ай бұрын
    • @@sdgelectronics I'd be very interested in that! The JBC one is around a grand, with VAT, which I really can't justify, but it's obvious from your recent videos how much easier it makes picking and placing SMD components, so a DIYable version would be great!

  • Is it not cost effective to have the boards populated by PCBWay? I think I'd be forever ordering all the jellybean parts - is there a better way to get a supply of them to keep on hand?

  • Any reason on your choice of the rs485 IC? Regarding the status leds you might use some kind of light channels so you won't have to get a separate pcb

  • Why did modbus decide on coils and registers? Took awhile to get my head around it. But very useful for controlling systems over ethernet very fast ans stable i found.

  • When did you switch over from Proteus to KiCAD and why?

    @sidharthap@sidharthap5 ай бұрын
    • My version of proteus was very old and it was missing a few features. I still use it sometimes because it's quicker though.

    • apparently it is not possible without the uart driver being modified. I will have to dig deeper...

      @sdgelectronics@sdgelectronics5 ай бұрын
    • OR just drive leds directly from RX and TX lines, set resistors for ~2mA and everything is alweys working independent of softwere. That what I alweys do when UART visual debug is needed. PS UART lines are idle at high so leds should light when bus is low.

  • @3:05 R6 and R8 are Not Fitted ? So I do not understand your remark. These resistors should never be fitted. Just check the datasheet.

    @ArjanvanVught@ArjanvanVught5 ай бұрын
    • You would normally bias the inputs with high value resistors for R6 and R8. When nothing is on the bus, these two lines would then be at approximately the same voltage through the 120R termination resistor.

    • @@sdgelectronics Ok. It is detailed described here "AN-1057 Ten Ways to Bulletproof RS-485 Interfaces". And I should have known as I am using RDM Controllers where these resistors are fitted. Thanks, Arjan

  • Just in time. I'm also currently building an esp32 rs485 interface for an meatrol energy meter. I'm testing rs485 comm with the esp32 boards. One is powered via esp-prog hooked up to serial monitor, the other only works with a specific usb c cable and adapter combo. Swapping out the cable or adapter will not work. Even plugging it on a powerbank or on the same laptop won't work. I think it is not booting since the buzzer is humming. The usb c connector shield is tied to ground on the layout. That usb power is then fed to a 3.3V LDO. Regardless i remove the rs485 ground connection between them. I'm still waiting for the meter (220 v ac input) and i'm looking to replace usb power for the esp32 with the same ac input thru a hi-link 3.3v converter module
