  • This is in He Nan, near Shaolin temple. I visited there a few years back, and was so impressed by how hard the kids trained. They start at 5am every day. You meet these kids on the roads here and there, all have this sunny air about them, dynamic, spirited, natural and always ready to help... Unlike many of the city kids you see who are often burdened by homework looking pale and sometimes spoiled... The martial arts training does seem to help kids to grow up healthy and sunny

Anyway, they will learn to behave and self control soon enough during NS. Nevertheless, I do think some form of martial arts should be taught as PE lessons, good for cultivating mental strength, especially kids these days having it too easy, with maids and all the material comforts.

  • If anyone is wondering, the girls at the end of the video are talking about their scars and the number of stitches some of their scars had. Which is pretty badass as I can imagine. I remember for the documentary, one got cut by a metal sword and had to get a decent number of stitches.

  • They are from Shaolin Tagoudo martial arts academy. Its one of the largest martial art academies in china and interestingly it was set up in 1970s in response to a Jet Li kung fu movie that came out. Its aim was to revive the kung fu within China.

  • Asian kids are the way they are cause of their parents. They have a sense of community and teach kids from a young age to have a strong moral fiber. To build a strong community you need strong families. Westerners see this as oppressive and to be honest my parents never forced me to go to school they just explained why I must and the consequences if I don’t. Growing up I thought the westerners had it better but now seeing what is unfolding in the US I can’t help but be thankful for my parents and the love we have for our community.
