Back in 1997 in Secaucus, New Jersey, appraiser Leigh Keno and his brother Leslie met Claire, the owner of a magnificent mahogany labeled Seymour card table. Several weeks after bringing it to ROADSHOW, Claire called Keno to discuss selling the mahogany table. Hear from Keno about what happened after Secaucus and why keeping some grunge on your furniture is almost always a good thing!
my 72yr old mom a big fan. I managed to get tickets in Seattle, It was busy, and great fun. I saw one of the Twins, and when he was done talking with some people. I told him my mom was a big fan, an could he come an say Hi, he said just a minute, went an got his brother, they came over and treated her like their mom. She was overwhelmed. They’re both sincere and all the excitement you’ve seen them as. Throughout the day, they spread their joy
I just love the twins!!!!
I went to the ARS in Portland, Oregon years ago. We didn't have anything of value, but they both gave me their autographs. It WAS fun. While we were waiting in line, we heard a big crash of glass...can you imagine how sick you would feel if it were you?
What a lovely story, thanks for sharing - Ann Aust.
I met them both in Carmel, Ca a few years during the Concours d'Elegance Tour. They were just walking down the street. I asked if I could take a photo, and they were very gracious and accommodating. Great guys.
Great story! Always loved the twins and they always seemed as genuine as you portrayed them. Thanks for the verification that they were who they actually seemed to be. Always looked forward to seeing them on Antiques Road Show.
"$490,000? Wow, that's neat!" What a sweetheart.
mrbear1302 ‘
Why so much??? I thought it would be closer to %15
@@mrbear1302 They took 25%
@@mrbear1302 Not even close. The commission is 10% of the hammer price. Then they get the buyers premium which is added on to the final hammer price.
yes 1780 card table , it"s very rare john & Thomus seymour made around 1770 to 1790 , than john was died in 1818 and Thomus was in 1848 , they are father and son , thear furniture still existed in some placess with very high value thx
"$490,000 . Isn't that neat?" She had me busting up laughing at how calm she was. I would have cheered out loud and probably needed a celebratory drink or three after that. :)
*The IRS has entered the chat*
""$490,000 . Isn't that neat?" She had me busting up laughing at how calm she was. I would have cheered out loud and probably needed a celebratory drink or three after that. :)" oh but how whelming of a response you maintain to her response. I would have smoked a tibetan bowl of tina with my lords and summoned azrael to do keg stands off the Keno brother's backs while blasting Relentless Execution Of Ceremonial Excrescence by Impetuous Ritual. ::::::)
I love how he explained that the table wasn’t worth as much today. Timing is key.
Yeah, but still a stand out piece and still not cheap. Today though chances are very high, that, if someone would buy this at a garage sale, this someone would paint it white. 😳🤦🏻♀️
I totally agree that timing is key. Also, audience is even more key! From all of these I have watched where they go to auction I have learned that much of the auction business at this level is making sure all the right types of buyers are there at auction time. So I agree you need the right timing of the market and the right timing of having all the buyers ready to buy.
The price of things like that always depends on if some people want it. All you need is two really rich people being present or represented at the same auction fighting for it and suddenly you just add 200k to the price because it’s rare both party know it won’t be on the market for a while if ever after that and for some 200k is not more than 20$ for regular folks. The market dictates the bottom line, not how much it can fetch.
The auction house made $51,000 for selling a card table.
Pricing tends to be cyclical, that table has existed through many value ups and downs I feel like high end furniture is a bit underappreciated right now in general
"Wow, that's neat!" That tickled me to tears.
To this day, Claire's Thomas Seymore table is my all time favorite ARS appraisal! The Navaho 1st phase blanket second.
The blanket was cool. It hung over the back of the chair for something like 40 years. Rhino horn cups was pretty mind blowing too. Then there was the two young women with dear ol departed aunty's 1 million $ Tiffany lamp
I actually found a picture of this table in Readers digest. saved it. hope the Seymour's made another one . I hope I find it☺️
That blanket was sick. Also, I think I’m the only person under 30yo in the comment section 😂
I'm 38. Good to see a fellow antiques lover
And then the Tiffany lamp for $250,000.
What a sweet old lady, I'm so happy for her ❤
Wow, so happy for her. That’s a great return on a $25 garage sale purchase!
I remember that episode very well! Loved that piece!
Return on investment! How much did she receive? Did a Sotheby’s get a commission from her too?
@@larryscott3982 5:25
I've watched this 10 times and I cry every time.
@adam steven Of course he didn't know she was buying something that valuable. Obviously the owner she bought from didn't either (imagine, it was sitting out on the lawn during a yard sale...). And she'd owned it for at least 30 years when she put it up for auction. Heck, the owner she bought from was probably dead at that point.
Love how he explained how the value dropped at the end. Just the way he did it without needless commentary was great.
This was the very first episode of Antiques Roadshow I ever saw about 15-20 years ago, and it has stuck with me until this very day. It got me into antiques and refinishing furniture! I'm always on the lookout for rare pieces.
“Wow, that’s neat!” How adorable is that?
My favorite is still the woman who's family use their Jade bowls to have snacks turned out it was from the first emperor of China she was as sweet as this lady
She was a racist
@@bingobango170 Your user name is racist...
@@bingobango170 everyone and everything is raycisss!!
It's kinda nice when you hear that people are using things for their original use. Especially when they have no clue. Cute.
Where can i see it?
I saw this when it first aired in 1997. You know the item has to be really amazing when the Keno brothers are together for the appraisal.
The size of their suits is incredible.. the 90s were insane!
Well, her take home wasn't actually $490,000. You have to deduct her original cost of $25 from that. So she only made $489,975. Just trying to be accurate.
😂😂
Yeah. And then there's another $10 or $15 for the gas to get there and her time, so it's hardly even worth it in the long run :|
-49% in taxes to the IRS for unearned income
Plus she now has to buy another table to fill that gaping hole in her bedsit. Life’s a bitch!
Why is it that there always has to be someone out there that just has to put a damper on someone else's joy?
Holy sweet mother of God... Why can't my family have antiques like this lol
Grandma left me a $25 McCoy cookie jar...
@@waterandafter 🤣🤣🤣
Be grateful you arent the next of kin selling this stuff off for peanuts!! Ouch!!
You need to drive by more garage sales...
Nobody in my family ever had anything good. It was all crap.
Growing up in a Family who sold and has antiques, my parents watched the Roadshow and loved these twins, Leigh & Leslie...They are top shelf lads who are so kind brilliant and make me feel happy to see them doing what they do best after losing both of my parents last year.
Hope that you are doing better now Drew. Hugs from the U.K. 👍🏻😷🏳️🌈
@@englishruraldoggynerd You are a very nice person!!!!
sending all my love
they come across as so good-hearted - and in love with what they do! And I am sorry for your double loss.
I love that she says it's neat. What a precious lady.
I love these guys. To be so enthusiastic for anything.
I can barely blow a load watching porn, let alone over an old card table.
I have always loved to listen to the Kino brothers talk about furniture. I have learned a lot.
My mother's favorite show! She never missed an episode!!
So glad to see this vintage video segment! Watched both Leigh and Leslie appraise items for years. Didn't realize that much time had passed by!
I remember watching the show when I was a kid and didn’t realize how long it’s been lol
I remember watching this when it aired. I remember thinking that she's got something good. When both twins show up, you have something really good.
This is my oldest and ultimate favorite memory of the show. My Mom and always knew that when the Keno Bros came on things where about to get exciting!
What a joy it was to be educated by these brothers on Antique Roadshow when this program first came on our TVs. I loved them the most, just to hear them tell us about old furniture and what to look for is Still Wonderful...Thank Ya'll so So So Much!
School teacher too. Bless her.
I was watching this show when it aired. My jaw dropped when they said that. I believe it started a run on garage sales of people looking for "that find".
It was always cool to see these guys get excited when someone brought something in. No poker faces for these bro's lol.
One of my favourite episodes, second only to the two girls who brought in their mom's Tiffany lamp, and were crying all over the place when they got the sky high estimate.
The Keno Bros. are the reason I like old furniture.
I've seen this 4 times and still enjoy watching it.
I wonder what my WalMart futon will fetch at auction 200 years from now.
Bout tree fiddy.
Make sure it has the original patina LOL!
Lydia Joy Cheeto dust and dry boogies. Got that Wal-Mart patina covered.
it wont last that long
I don't think it will be collectible. It will still be junk. So will mine.
One of the most iconic items ever on Antiques Roadshow. That alone has bumped up the value significantly.
Why do you consider it one of the most iconic? I’m just curious!
I'd feel the need to give quite a large token of appreciation to the original owner;)
Always thought of the table over the years. Thank you for re-visiting this!
This was one of my favorite episodes. My Dad, my husband and I have made many basic things like display cases, cabinets and bookcases. We know the work that goes into making something. Our stuff doesn't even come close to this level of intricacy. 😁 It's great to see the craftsmanship appreciated this many years later !!!
How can you compare book cases and cabinets to Rolex watches?? I don't see the comparison?
@@MikeSmith-cn6ub It was the Seymour card table that I was commenting on. Dear goodness, no, we have never attempted watch or clock making.
@@MikeSmith-cn6ub lol what are you on about Rolex watches, you watching the same video? lol
@@Clarke2316 I don't think so, I was watching a episode where dude had a Rolex worth 100k but some how comment ended up on this thread
"Isn't that neat" ...
Awesome! Great show. We watch this show every Monday night ,2 hours worth.👍👍👍 $490,000!
I remember when this aired -- they were beside themselves. It was very sweet to see. It's fun seeing people nerding out over the things they love.
I wish I had an old piece of furniture to be appraised by these 2. Love them!❤
I love it when someone gets a genuine surprise like this. Very cool. Especially a school teacher.
This show is so enjoyable to watch because of the people like Claire, and the professionalism and knowledge of the appraisers.
This is a classic. I remember when this aired, years ago. Good for her.
5:20 “Isn’t that neat? $490,000!” I love her lol. Too cute 🥰
Love this guy . Need more of him
I remember this show ! I was so happy for her!
what a gem of a person, good for her,I hope that kept her comfortable for the rest of her life :)
I love the Keno brothers.
My favourite old lady ever on this show, because she was smart enough to clean just the top layer of gunk off the table without damaging the original finish any more than it already was.
She said it was "neat". HOLY CRAP THAT WOULD BE LIFE CHANGING FOR ME. haha Leigh & Les Keno WERE Antiques Roadshow, as far as I was concerned, back when I watched it every week in the '90s. This was a great blast from the past.
I remember watching the show if you guys had not been there to tell her so in my eyes that.s how God works. Thanks guy and the show for doing what you do. Love the show.
"Isn't that neat". She's a sweetheart. Good for her.
This was the first really "big" appraisal I remember seeing on the Roadshow. I knew a 7-figure appraisal would come eventually also, and I remember seeing one of those.
Gorgeous table 😍😍😍😍
I went to so many estate sales when I was younger. Almost every weekend. I can only imagine the items I passed on in jammed packed old houses. The woman is very sweet and reserved, but, I bet she did a perfect cartwheel in the parking lot - maybe two in a row. :) When you can buy a luxury retirement condo off a $25 investment, you'd do one too!
I saw the original show and the updates. I appreciate the follow up.
These two gentlemen are pretty cool to be that enthusiastic about their chosen craft!!
Enjoy followups like this, thanks.
Claire: (Once they said the table was sold) "Isn't that neat!?" Had it been me: "OMFG YUS!!!!" *Whooping, hollering, and awkward cartwheels ensues* I'm 75% certain that I would have fainted dead away... the other 25% is doing the cartwheels.
Happy for the lady who sold it, but also fascinated by the honest statement of how changing tastes affect value.
I'm really happy for the woman who bough it but also feel so sorry for the lady who sold it ....I hope she never knew what a mistake she made for her own sake .
490k in 1998 is almost 800k today. Not bad for a yard sale!
Wow , I need to make more of those
I remember watching this live on PBS years ago!
Has to be the best garage sale flip of all time?? Good for her
I was watching this live. Love the twins.
Repost, but one of my favorites. Maybe it wasn't in Extraordinary Finds last time?
This lady is so humble
Leigh Keno (Rod Stewart clone) is my favorite for his detailed and professional delivery. He's in the right business.
Awesome! Good for her. 👍
That’s fantastic!!
I love the the Keno brothers!
It’s now worth 16 rolls of toilet paper and 11 small bottles of sanitizer gel!
Hahahhaha
.......my kind of humor....
Ha!! I just blew some Diet Coke outta my nose! Funny comment.
Love hearing stories like this
I like when she tries to argue and say she is a good cleaner lol
The real life and body mint of doctors Frasier and Niles crane! Awesome!
That's the Crocker Museum in Sacramento! I went there last year, great museum. Awesome to see it here!
I love those twins 💜💜
Love when this happens!
It’s amazing how people will buy something like that and it’s worth so much money God bless her for keeping it
I love the keno brothers!
“That’s neat!” 😂
Can you imagine??? My Lord, can you say the best 25 dollars I ever spent?!!!!!! She's set the rest of her life!
Really?? Where do you live? My dear mother in law, rest her soul, plowed thru 1.4 million the last 15 years of her life in living expenses and geriatric care. Unless you want to live in a state run home youll need 2 mil to live the life you want to.
The lady did not seem all too shocked when told $300k possible value. When received $490k she says “Isn’t that NEAT”? Bless her heart.
To me she sounded already well to do so another 500k just topping on her cake at her age I woulda sold it too
9 people gave this a thumbs down. Why for God's sake? If you're watching this video you want to see a great price for something bought for so little. And Clair was so cute too.
Can u imagine the person who sold it at the yard sale.
That's what I was thinking! Holy cow, what luck!
meirl
Got to feel a little like Pete Best.
If I were her I would have cut a handsome check to the yard sale buyer.
@@alton31ellis She probably would have no way of contacting the person.
Jaw dropping turn of fortune!!
I wonder if the people at the garage sale caught wind of this...there isn't a foot big enough to accurately kick yourself with that allows you to recover from realizing you lost out on nearly half a million.
amazing
I hope that table will help her in her retirement years
Love the Keno Brothers
"That's neat," she says... LOL!
Auction houses typically just add whatever percentage they use on TOP of the final hammered down auction price. That's where they make their money. And since high end places, like Sothebys, auction off very expensive stuff, their percentage add on makes them LOTS of money.
But in exchange you get a high-profile sale with the top bidders in attendance.
Just the fact she got so much more!
That's neat! Omg she's adorable...
490 thousand, wow that's neat. . That was cute
I wonder if the two brothers remember being thrown out of the house of Lloyd in Philadelphia for Low balling Mr. Loyyd? I grew up in the neighborhood and knew Mr. Frank for 40+ years. His back story alone is worth its weight in gold.
Can you imagine the lady that sold it for 25 bucks, watching this show, I'd feel bad, I mean, idk, I'm not s businessman, a guy in Maine was selling something in his yard sale, I said I'll give you 300 dollars for the item, he says to me, that wouldn't be fair, give me a 100 bucks, and I remember being so impressed by his fair-minded self, that memory has stuck with me my whole life, that was 46 years ago, imagine if the world was like that.🙏
I bet that woman who sold it for 25.00 at the yard sale is sick after seeing this!!! 👍💕🔥💯😢
There's essentially no possibility that she would ever know. This was bought in ~1967, 30 years before. So it's been long forgotten, if the yard sale seller was even still alive. And watched the Antiques Roadshow.
At a yard sale, many people just want stuff gone and sometimes people buy stuff, both not having any idea what it's worth. Back in the day, it was out with old and in with the new. Sometimes people do know what they are buying. They bargain and it is what it is. So, yes that person didn't get the market value of what they were selling. But did they feel screwed at the time? Probably not. Now with internet research, stumbling across a true bargain is quite rare and almost miraculous, because most people have a set idea of value that they've seen something listed for online.
My wife and I agree, the thumbnail looks like a thin Wayne Gretzky
