It’s no secret that Klopp’s philosophy has a pretty clear sell by date, and his time at both Dortmund and Liverpool suggest that his heavy metal football can’t go on forever. With liverpool’s ageing midfield being one of the main reason to their lackluster season, there’s a reason why they moved so quickly to sign the world cup winner Alexis Mac Allistar, but his style of play gives us a big hint as to what klopp is planning for next season, and it’s setting up to be a completely different approach to what Liverpool are known for. Let's take a look!

  • the gegen press works but you have to upgrade your team regularly especially in the midfield department. The two most worst Liverpool players this season, Henderson and Fab, are midfielders who were overplayed in this tiring system. Klopp's system worked in his earlier days at Liverpool because of the players unbelievable physicality. Gini for example is available for 99% of the time and he never gets tired and he ran like a half marathon every match. But since teams, except Mancity, figured that sitting in a low block is the best way to approach Liverpool he wanted to take some of the creativity from the FB's to the MF. Hence, he bought Thiago who was exceptional at times, especially last year, but due to his frequent injuries couldn't maintain his high standard. Now is time for MacAllister, Kone, Thuram kind of players who blend combativeness with technique. Klopp won't change the gegen press but he is going to modify it by bringing more control and less franticness

    • A fellow coaching genius 👏🏻👏🏻 If truly Klopp was going to maintain the Gegenpress, I don't think MacAllister would have been his first transfer. Therefore if Klopp is forgoing Gegenpress for poessesion based football, the missing piece is a true destroyer as DM cos Fabinho is just not going to cut it. Smart thinking to move to possession based actually, seeing that FSG don't want to invest in players and the youngsters like Jones, Bacjetic and Elliot are technical players. But here's the thing, if truly it's possession based now, Nunez is officially a waste of money cos there's no way he's fitting in this system. Also, Man City will ride Liverpool like how they rode Arsenal cos you can't outplay Man City at poessesion lol you COUNTER THEM.

That's how I look into a system. I feel right now Pep & Klopp are the finest coaches who adopt their own distinct style in football which played correctly is a treat to watch. The weakness is their high line of attack but as an opponent we are being relentlessly bombarded with their pressing up to a point that we choke to failure. Only last season did Klopp take a break from gegen pressing & that was due to injuries. Still there were matches were they played some counter pressing.

    • @@ahmadag1820You can't tell me Real Madrid are more technical than Man City( the team Klopp has won more games against than lost against) So that isn't true. Barcelona 2019 are more technical than Real Madrid. Even tho they won 3-0 in the first leg(when you could argue Liverpool played better) they lost 4-0 and were just completely outplayed in the second leg. Klopp's Dortmund beat Guardiola's Bayern multiple times who usually has the most technically gifted players and his teams are some of the greatest teams of all time when it comes to positional play. Not only that but he also beat a much more technical with also better positional play Real Madrid team with Ozil, Xabi Alonso 4-1 at Dortmund. So that statement is incorrect there is simply no evidence of it.

That led to poor form of key midfielders and too many injuries last season. That’s my opinion anyway. I’m glad there’s finally a backup natural cdm in Bajcetic, He looks like a great talent. As for Gegen pressing, Klopp already spoke about how much the box midfield improves counter pressing situations, and I don’t think it’s going anywhere

Whatever role MacAllister is involved in: He's the best performance for price signing of the Summer and I doubt that will be beat so Liverpool should be very satisfied with that transfer process. I think for offence he'll be more helpful at keeping the ball higher up in the danger aka tilt zone and across a season that will probably add up? Liverpool still need a solid DM presence however to negate those long ball counters they suffered last season so will need another signing there.

  • Signing Mac Allister & positioning Trent as more of an inverted full back coming into midfield rather than pushing wide as a wing back will definitely give Liverpool alot more dominance in possession given their skill sets in passing. Where as in Klopp's 1st midfield of Wijnaldum, Henderson & Fabinho all looked to protect the 2 CB's being left whilst the full backs pushed up high as wingers pretty much to help supply the width, this 2.0 side that Klopp will look to rebuild will be more technically proficient whilst still keeping the base eliments of a Klopp side with the gegenpress. 4-3-3 will still be the base formation they step onto the pitch with but whenin possesion/attack it'll still resemble a 2-3-5 shape but set up differently. Before like l said earlier Fabinho would be the main DM who would at times sit inbetween the 2 CB's during build up but would also have Henderson & Wijnaldum both pressing & aggressively harrying the opposition into giving up possession. Whilst the 2 full backs would become wingers allowing Salah & Mane to act as 2 strikers/inside forwards attacking the space Firmino would leave when dropping deep. Now l should imagine or I'd like to see that Robertson would still press forward out wide providing the width on the left allowing Gakpo to come inside & attack the half space in the left centre where he's deadly, Mac Allister, Fabinho or Kone for eg would be joined making a 3 in midfield infront of the 2 CB's but would be alot more technically better in keeping possession whilst having the pressing mentality but not as aggressive as before. The other CM would push forward into the right half space with Salah having the freedom of the right wing to exploit the space. Hopefully Nunez will be the main striker in this new set up Klopp looks to using. He has so much potential & will score goals in this new possession based way of playing. Having VVD's & Alisson passing from deep, Trent & Mac Allister's passing range from CM, 2 AM's behind him & 2 wingers supplying the width.

  • Why are people still talking about Klopp playing the gegenpress or not. Since 2019 we have played like a Possession side more than being dependent on counter pressing which is always going to be part of our game but we have evolved from relying on it too heavily as other teams evolved in countering it. Basically we need a game plan for different opponents and that’s it. Also Klopp has been trying for a long time to find more technical midfield players but non have been able to be as effective as he’d hoped. Let’s see now he’s actually got his men how well play

  • One of the biggest problems with Liverpool's gegenpress is that Liverpool players try to steal the ball rather than win it. Other teams have realised that and with a little change in direction they have been able to beat Liverpools press. Much like a bullfighter does with a bull. Man city do much the same thing but they are much more touch tight when defending and if they don't get the ball they make sure they get the man so the attack is stopped one way or another.

  • I appreciate the analysis but disagree with your conclusions. I think this is acquiring a controller in function similar to wjinaldum and abandoning the attempt to use a deep lying playmaker of thiago, a recognition of a mistake in the transfer market. I think you saw with Gakpo coming in january, that liverpool were correcting a mistake in the transfer market in that Darwin Nunez was to be the transformational piece last summer but should be at Atletico madrid and not liverpool. his direct actions and tendency for runs to the left creates a situation where they lose the numerical advantage that firmino gave them in the center of the field, because he is not looking to sit in, but stay on the last shoulder for balls over the top. This sort of situation is peak Simeone or Conte or Frank, because both ask their forwards to either block lanes into the center when the ball is with defenders, or pin them back when the ball bypasses the first line of pressure, not aggressively pressing centerbacks or dm's with the ball. Gakpo being used primarily thru the middle along with a return of diaz allows them to have a better front press structure that they cannot do with Darwin. Additionally the fact that henderson is getting older means that they dont get enough pressure on the 2nd centerback as they used to and that leaves a lane out for opposition teams in buildup. ( Or be De Zerbi and require the opposition to have 4 players on your double pivot in addition to your 4 on each defender.) Liverpools issues are multiple, and primarily come down to FSG's inexperience in squad building in Soccer compared to Baseball, and klopp being too loyal to players for too long. If they do create this WM shape that you are noteing here, then Darwin can be useful in a situation where they are actively not playing with the ball but i dont believe Klopp or Ljinders will ever accept not being the protagonist in the match. Additionally the WM spells the end of Robertson as he is not a left side centerback (his scotland LB team mate on the other hand . . .). I think that the Alexi Mac signing is a recognition that the team has become much worse without the stability and control that gini offered and that the deep lying playmaker qualities of Thiago+TAA dont suit Fabinho's qualities anymore or the fact that the thru balls thiago wants to hit are generally not on, when teams tightly pack the box in banks of either 541 or 451. i believe that the WM was an answer to a specific season question, and not a long term shift in approach. the signings of gakpo and mac allister go 2/3's of the way to solving the issues plauged last season. With a henderson replacement the question is what type. one who is comfortable between boxes and can shift wide to provide a threat on crossing or direct running, or who is mostly focused on pressing and also being boring in possession. this shifts Mac's remit and allows him to be more attacking. With regards to whom this RCM is, i am not sure but looking in the french and german leagues for a good presser is probably the first order and then determining the best value after that. I would look at Kiernan Dewsbury hall from leicester, and Jens Cajuste from Reims, and maybe punt on Enzo Le Fee ( is a bit of an older harvey elliot but better tackle stats (FB Ref) However, Mac Allister allows them or a future coach in 2024/25 to use a variety of systems because he has proven himself to be an adaptable midfielder in either a positional play scheme that De-Zerbi uses or the relationism of Scaloni.

    • The OP seems confused. Klopp has been moving away from Heavy Metal football for 4 years. But Klopp still believes in the high line which complements a pressing midfield. The high line offers a degree of support and compactness with a pressing midfield, and helps recycle the ball quickly. Also, would anyone actually dare play a high line without some kind of midfield press? It would be madness. As to you point, all front-footed attacking teams use a high and/or mid press some of the time. Controlling/possessing teams want to do this for the reason you state. That is not just Klopp; it never has been just Klopp. What is Klopp is how they have moved from very aggressive traps towards more subtle and energy efficient traps, such as purposefully partially shadowing a passing lane to entice a possible turnover.

  • With Dom and Macca up front I really do think that Liverpool are one quality player away from challenging. I was not terribly impressed with Endo's debut but he had been with the club for all of one day so I understand that there is probably more to come from him. Gravenberch (even though he isn't a CDM) would be the business. If they go for Manu Kone, I wouldn't be disappointed but Gravenberch would be huge. And he isn't playing at Bayern anyway. With Macca, Dom and Gravenberch I really do think that Liverpool would be fighting at the front.

  • Klopp has modified his approach long time ago. Liverpool havent been pure gegenpressing since early Klopp days (2016-2018). He added many other ideas along the way while being influenced by his rivalry with Pep in PL thoughout the years. Both influenced each other. Pep developed his pressing tactics, while Klopp developed his ideas in possession. Liverpool along with City have been the team with the most possession than any other PL teams in last few seasons. So its not like LFC werent having more possession. You can have more possession also via ferocious pressing. Will they become more possession-based like City? I doubt. They still gonna have possession with more purpose.

  • If Klopp is moving into this new system w/ the inverted RB to MF Trent, it leaves open wide gaps in the defense, lots of spaces to cover, easy to exploit in counters. Robbo & Tsimikas are not natural CBs, easy targets for opponents to exploit. Dont have bench cover for VVD & Konate, need to invest in a CD. I would prefer a back 4 line (with Trent in MF and Gomes / Ramsay at RB) or switch to a back 3 with a proper CD. The team roster is still unbalanced. Let's see what other signings come through. MacAllister is a good player & signing, will be competing with Jones and Thiago for starting XI

    • @@anish26295 Agree 100%. I have a degree of frustration with Klopp's critics, who lambast him for stubbornness to play the 433 the same way all the time. WTF. It seems they did not notice that Liverpool did experiment with the 4231 several times, and beat City at Anfield with that formation. But the 4231 sometimes failed spectacularly, and a lack of midfield options had everything to do with that. One of the problems last season was a lack of players who had the pace to smother counters. That is one of the reasons Trent ended up isolated and targeted. A DM who can cover ground and/or Gomez shifting into RB and/or a new pacy CBs could do wonders.

  • No chance. Just needs a plan B. You can’t gen press all season. There are games who teams will gen press you just as much and it just gets chaotic and it’s a complete waste of energy. No need to gen press a team poor on the ball or lacking any goal threat with 11 defenders. Klopp can outsmart Pep, but Pep has the squad and is more willing to change things. Makes you think of Buvac had more importance. Plus season after season of intensity with a trimmed down squad, you have no chance. Certain games need to change to stop us being so vulnerable. Still looking at energetic signings although not the prime targets so gen pressing will stay as Klopps number one tactic. PLAN B needs to involve Dawin as a 9 and an AM signing now Carvalho is going out on loan. Switch the formation! 352

Eventually everybody adapts to you. So even the innovators have to change. This is what makes pep really top class. Jurgen is also obvs very good. That fool postecoglou who will be coaching Tottenham next season always gegenpresses his opponent in virtually every match.
