  • I would go with the R1T. I think it's the most innovative. It's also the best off-road and I like the size. I don't need a full-size truck and I certainly don't need a 9000 lb truck.

At this point Rivian may have enough going for it that if it can’t raise more investment a larger car maker may buy it. I’d guess in several years there will still be Rivians being made, but perhaps with a Japanese name badge.

  • I love my Lightning. I went with the Lariat due to wanting the larger battery. The one thing you didn't cover, is it's not just a vehicle. They have setup to be a mobile power station that can actually power things. That is what sold me to put in my reservation. I like the look of the R1T and would consider it. But if I have issues, I can go to my local Ford dealership or any in the nation to get some help. The Hummer is an expensive toy. Not to mention GM hasn't exactly been known for the most reliable electrical components over the years. You saw ford putting the lightning to the test all over. It gave me more confidence. I have towed with my lightning, I have a popup camper, and it pulls .3kwh from my range. But for any of these the charging network sucks ass! I kept my 2016 F150 because the charging network is so bad.

  • R1T : awesome off-roader, but, at the same time great as a daily driver and sporty too when needed . Fits in normal garage. Constant improvement coz of over the air updates . Also Rivian is the only other manufacturer apart from Tesla that’s investing in their own fast charger network ( Rivian adventure network). It’s small now but has potential to grow .Also, as it’s direct sale to customers no dealer markup or haggling hassle . All round really good value .

So far the current R1 owners seem to really dig the OTA and Rivian seems to be listening to them and implementing updates .

    • I agree except that a "normal garage" has shrunk. I was waffling between R1T and R1S, the deciding factor ended up being that the R1S fits in my garage (barely), while the R1T was too long to fit. I don't think any truck fits in my garage. I got an R1T loaner while my R1S was at the service center overnight and I really liked it. My previous vehicle was a Tundra.

    • @@RealGaryGR that’s true . I guess “normal” is a relative term for garages , especially when it comes to parking trucks in them . The R1S is an awesome vehicle and claimed to be a better off-roader too as it’s a shorter wheelbase and better angles of departure etc .

    • @uik99 I have old iPhones that still work fantastic with the apps made for it; over the air updates have only helped. The problem is the new features and apps, which are made to take advantage of better hardware, just don’t run well. As long as you stick with existing features and don’t expect to get full self driving over the air, the updates offer more reliability for existing things and improve the functionality of those things through minor tweaks; for example, they can easily add extra information to the dashboard over the air based on customer feedback.

I wanted a $45000 configured pro version but didn’t work out. Now likely $55K. Still waiting but happy with my 75K rivian much more than an equally configured Lightning. I like that it's electric in stealth mode--you recognize it if you know what you're looking for, but otherwise it doesn't scream EV. Great vehicle to drive, and I like that it came from an established manufacturer.

  • I have been saying for 3 years that the reason the Cyber Truck in not in production is that TFL released a video on 8/12/2019. In this video, they (TFL) (Y'ALL) pulled a trailer on the Ike's Gauntlet and the range results were very bad. I have been defending Tesla saying that the Cyber Truck keeps getting delayed because they (Tesla) will not produce it until it will get a much better range. Now that Tesla have delivered the first Semi and it is getting the reported range, I expect the Cyber Truck to do the same. So when people ask you if your channel is important, you can tell them that Billy in South Carolina Thinks so. Thank you, Gentlemen and keep up the good work.

  • So, "the truck we would buy with our own money if money was not a consideration." Gotcha. Yes, the Hummer charges 30% or so faster than anything out there. With a battery more than twice as big. That's a net loss on time to charge. I won't mention the efficiency bringing the range added per time charged way below basically anything. Speed to charge should be miles added per time. On that measure, it's kinda pathetic.

  • Of these 3, I would likely pick the Lightning - but it's interesting in a cost-no-object scenario, Andre picks the Lighting Pro because it's cheaper and the tonneau cover from his hybrid F150 can be reused. 😆 I would like to see the Silverado with it's midgate before I buy though.

  • If I had to pick one, and money wasn't a problem it would be the Rivian. It's not the biggest and it doesn't tow, but none of the really tow well and to me vehicle size has diminishing returns as there is a certain point where extra shoulder room and extra cargo room just translates to hauling empty air and a heavier vehicle. The R1T on paper has all I need in terms of space and utility in a smaller package than the other two, which makes it more manageable in both city/town and back country roads. Realistically however the Lighting is much closer to my financial reach than either of the other two, and offers incredible utility that I wouldn't be disappointed with. The Hummer while incredibly awesome, comes at to steep of a price, both in dollars and in the fact it's large battery takes longer to charge, and it's incredible weight would be more wear and tear on just about anything it contacted, including my theoretical driveway and garage which more than likely wouldn't be built to handle 9000 lbs.

The R1T gives me the capabilities I would ever need, I.e., local-only towing and hauling and off-road capability, and if I want to shred it on a canyon road, the super capable road handling with its McLaren-inspired suspension and its 835HP torque vectoring AWD is enough to make me smile so hard that it would hurt. The R1T is kind of a best-in-class all a-rounder for me. Otherwise, the Lightning would be fine. No way would I ever buy the Hummer.

  • Technically, there is the option of conversion, which your channel has done. I know I'd try to model the Lightning if I were to convert, however. Since the frame is similar to F-150's, it might be easier to use things like the Eluminator on the conversion. Ford also attached a large equipment package to the extended range battery on their current Lightning models. The parts could potentially be offset in cost as well with the F-150 gasoline parts. The rear suspension could be an issue. The only real difference in frames is that the front grid is removed to make the frunk something more easily accessible, which means it is very possible to put the battery pack into the frame. There are also potentially tusks added to ensure that vehicles are pushed to the side in collisions.

I also reserved a Lightning the day of launch with a hope of test driving both trucks before making a buying decision. The Rivian buying process was smooth and easy for me. I originally wanted the Lariat ER, but by the time they got around to letting me order after several price hikes and the cuts to the tax credit, I chose the XLT SR. Since it will be about 700 pounds less than the Lariat ER, I hope for a little extra efficiency. I have reservations for the Silverado and Cybertruck whenever they may appear I can evaluate my choices. I liked the Rivian but the bed was a little too small for my purpose, so for them I would have gone with the R1S if they offered a two wheel motor version to bring down the price since I was put off by parting with $1000 to be in line for x number of years to get the initial pricing.

And while specifically that was not in my mind, the fact that there are dealers all over the place that could/can service the Lightning is a pretty big practical consideration. However, I would pick the Rivian out of the 2. (GMC just does not count) There are a lot of reasons the Rivian appeals to me, but I think Nathan had it nailed. It is just more versatile over all. That being said, the Bollinger had my complete attention when you reviewed it. And while the price is absurd, it did very much have a lot of things that appealed to me. Even tho it is not really a primary driver type comfy vehicle(s). I was going to ask you what ever happened with them, but did my own research and learned exactly what you revealed here.(over 2 months ago) Now, all that being said, don't have a need for any of it. lol In my youth it was far more important. I’m leaning more towards the Rivian because of how large the lightning is in comparison. My wife already has a large suv and having 2 large vehicles is more overkill, IMO. I wanted the rivian, and/or the cyber truck, for the tonneau cover…to secure my son’s baseball equipment. But since Rivian is no longer releasing the truck with the cover, I’m not sure if the added weight of the original cover placed on the lightning will add more weight and affect the range. But size is king and I’m leaning ever close to the Rivian

(160kms) (I don't think the Rivian with a trailer made it that far) I know how long it takes and how many fuel stops it takes for me to go from Sylvan Lake Alberta to Vancouver Island BC and adding a day or 2 at a hotel or staying the trailer cause I can't make it there in what is already 14hr drive and that's without road construction (with the Rivian that's 8.3-9.3 stops to charge) that's possible 2 to 4 days of my holidays gone charging a truck, so you can keep your EV and I'll keep my gas pot thanks

The Rivian would have been a dream come true. In my 70's, my idea of camping is sleeping in a regular bed in a heated space. The Lightening allows me to tow a small travel trailer to get to a comfortable campsite. I prefer some of the extras that aren't available on the Pro including using the battery as backup power for my house. I like my heated seats and my local Ford dealer (not the closest but far better than the competition). I don't want a toy. That leaves out the Hummer. And the Rivian has no reliable service history. • If things go according to plan, I will be ordering a Lightning Pro next year. Pro because it better loaded than my ‘07 XLT Supercrew. Everything I needed, and nothing I don’t (though I prefer clothe seats). My question to you guys is, has the EV tech become reliable enough to be the sole means of transportation? Or should EV’s go to multi-vehicle homes? I bought my ‘07 new (first new vehicle!), and have put 97,000 on it since. Obviously, I don’t have far to drive. So an EV should be perfect for daily driving. But occasionally I want to travel to visit friends and family, well out of range of the Pro. I’d like to see you guys to take multiple inexperienced EV driver, hand them the keys to one, and tell them to go to destination at least 500 miles away. No instructions on how to plan their stops, or find charging station’s. Because this is how most of us will be entering the EV market. We’ll learn as they learn. I think it’ll help ease the nervousness of a lot of people who want their next purchase to be an EV.

I tow a camper and the idea of going only maybe 150 miles (if I’m lucky) and then having to charge for 30-40 min or more (and maybe unhitch to get to the charger), to keep going to my goal of, say, 350-500 miles, just doesn’t work. All three are pretty cool, but I’d have one in my garage now if there was a PHEV.

Range and charging needs to come a long way especially when your talking charging availability when camping and driving and not having to stop for a few hours on each drive to fill up. $$$.$$$.$$ isn’t an option like you both mentioned of course because for a common blue collar guy most are out of the equation. So with all that, I test drove all three of these vehicles and I felt the lightning had the most comfortable ride. Range is not an issue for me because I'll never take it on a trip. I don't drive off road. I do some hauling, but anything really heavy I'll tow my trailer. And I want as much on board inverter power available. Ford has had the best selling truck for nearly 40 years . So my choice is the Ford lightning wins for me in all my requirements. I'd probably be happy with the pro but with 9.6 kw power, SR battery, spray in bed liner. For these 3 reasons: It's a ford, Best ride, most on board power.
