The rubber fuel tank mount for my vintage motorcycle wasn't manufactured or sold anymore, so I had to make my own! Using all free software, I made a 3D model, 3D printed a prototype, and cast the final part with urethane rubber in a 3D printed mold.

Hope this video helped the 3 people who have a rectangular part they need but don't have! Part 9 of the GPZ series is coming out soon, but if you want to see updates before then, then follow me @fingerprintsworkshop on Instagram
*10 minutes 14 seconds video, sheesh ;-)
I don’t even intend to custom fabricate anything by watching this video. I just missed your glorious voice ;)
Tempted to make one of these just because I can. It would also prove your design is feasible for people to do.
I actually have a rectangular-ish motorcycle rubber tank support piece i need to fabricate from a picture using a 3d printer, so this is extremely helpful
You made me go back and watch the episode 7 part of the molding, so I could see the finished product. I have already seen it but you roped me in you son of a bitch. :)
Young man, as an old, retired designer, in both graphic and industrial design, you can not imagine what I would have given to have such tools to use instead of my old drafting table and rulers ! See, my first computer was a *revolutionnary* 1984 Apple MacIntosh ! Me and my partner at the time, were the very first ones in our area to use such a machine. Clients were do impressed ! As our design business grew, we hired fresh, new, faster young turks as you are. We got tech distanced so fast, it was scariy. Now, simply as a hobbyist DIYer, I would like so much to use such tools. But at 70 y.o. the learning curve is too steep ! My learning cells are now too slow, damn it ! My internal hard disk is obviously overloaded. Anyway, I found your channel by your resto on the 1985 Fiero 2M4. I owned 2 1984, and now my precious, mint 1988 GT, 5 speed. At least, we're Fiero enthousiasts, about the only thing we share ! Keep on doing your fine work ! You have a bright future in engineering, sir ! 👍
This guy needs to have his own TV show like a Myth Busters or How It's Made. HIs delivery, information and touches of humor are awesome!
I would prefer him to focus on youtube and gain a few million followers so he can make more $$$ and more videos.
"This Guy".... has a name. Ronald Finger. Use it.
exactly this
He needs to finish school first, but truthfully he is way too smart to spend all his time entertaining us forever. He needs to be working for NASA or Tesla.
perhaps a video series where hundreds of thousands of individuals watch him restore vehicles
Excited for the 280Z project! Also thanks for this video, it's quite informative.
You just make all this sound so simple, but really is amazing how you can literally make a part probably just as good as OEM at home with minimal cost. Super impressed and glad to see the ability to overcome a setback like this is still able to be done by the next generation of builders. Not all hope for humanity is lost.
Absolutely fascinating, you have a great skill for explaining complex topics in readily understandable fashion.
Was.... Was that... WAS THAT A 240Z Fairlady?!?!
Looked more like a 280Z to me.
That perspective software is insane wow I've been 3D modeling for over 20 years and that thing could have saved me days of work...
But whats a few days over the course of 20 years huh.
My first 3d printer is in the mail. I am renovating an abandoned house. When I got here, the fridge was nasty and the shelves were all gone, as well as the inner door parts. The sticker with the serial number and model number are faded and unreadable. The fridge was super cleaned outside and still works. Rather than buying a new fridge before I renovate the kitchen, I am using the old one. I will be applying this methodology on the door interface for the door shelf braces. Print the left and right sides, attach them to something in-between and hopefully have new temporary door shelf retainers. So, this video was super helpful.
That's a bright idea to keep, restore your "old" fridge. The new ones are crap. Don't last.
@@marcryvon Most people would have tossed this fridge. I spent a lot of time scrubbing it outside to get it clean enough to keep using it. I chose to keep it because I was able to get it clean and I would rather not buy one of today's throw away models.
Buddy, I never commented on your videos, but that explanation you gave was just BRILLIANT.... Creativity at 1000%, congratulations Ron I'm your fan
A Z restoration!!! You can bet that I'll be watching this!
THE MADLAD GOT A Z CAR!
when using 3D printing to create a mold, I had always imagined printing a part, using silicone to create a mold, then using that mold with whatever material I wanted. I never even thought of printing the mold itself, that's awesome!
2 videos in just 1 month, makes me very happy
Really looking forward to part 9 and dude, a 280Z??? that's going to be a crazy project
Hopefully, a turbo manual !
@@marcryvon well if the badge is correct, it's at least a manual 5-speed Edit: the L28ET (turbo 2.8) was only in the 280zx so unless it was swapped in, it's not turbo
I'm not interested in bikes, nor 3D modelling, but I AM interested in your videos.
The vanishing point was a big part of the art, geometry and drafting classes I took in private school which has been very handy when I designed and built my own house from 90 percent reclaimed materials 30ish years ago. The irony, I guess, is I've never owned or used a computer other than the phone and tablet I have mainly for communication, entertainment and education which is why I'm getting the Finger right now. Vague psychobabble over.
I have no idea what any of the computer stuff does or how it works, but I really enjoy the content.
That worked, you got me excited. Looks like a 280Z based on the tail lights and the rubber bumper extenders. Can't wait!
I love how random these upload schedules are. Never know when youre going to be blessed
I don't care how "dog shit" your topology is... your talent for demoing it for those interested (and those not interested) is mezmerizing and excellent. Keep going!
Wow, I like witnessing someone with a great command of their craft. Excellent work mate!
You have absolutely no idea how hyped I am for the 280z project
I sent this to my brother who is a design engineer for NASA. They were given free rein with the 3D printer at work to learn what it could and couldn't do. I have no clue what Ronnie is talking about here but he's so entertaining it doesn't matter.
This is what being a good education and being really smart will get you. Good job.
I have AutoCad and 3DS Max on my machine and I am very proficient with both, Blender on the other hand I am not. Blender is a pretty complex program to use and you made it look so simple.
You know I don't even care you had a mount the whole time on your other gas tank in your attic...😂...this was just some fantastic information to see. Thank you for sharing Ron!!
There's something kind of perfect about the use of Blender and the donut painting behind you.
Already a new video, 3d software nerding about and new project car. This is a good day.
You make me feel very old and so last millennium. Good on you for working out a modern way to create some unobtanium.
datsun!
I actually used a bunch of these processes and a few others yesterday to design and print a sprocket for a motorcycle water pump for a friend in town. 3D printers are amazing. It took me 2 hours to design using Tinkercad, CorelDRAW and a few pictures and measurements with my caliper. 4hs to print, though!
Just wow. I love that you used all open source tools to make the 3D model. From there I think I could replicate a model in OpenSCAD. Great walkthrough. You make me want to get back into 3D printing.
And it really is that simple! 😳
@Ronald Finger , I truly enjoy your channel. I followed your Fiero build beginning to end, watching numerous episodes multiple times. Keep up the good work!
That's a 77-78 5-speed 280z, assuming the bumper and badge are original. Judging from the paint I'd say it's another car you found sitting abandoned in a field for 10+ years. I can't tell if it's a 2+2 or not or what your plans are for it, but I can't wait to find out! Man, you're really hitting all my favorite classics.
Thanks sincerely Ronald. For the entertainment value, have been following your works since the first of the Fiero, in that I learned Freecad by myself and always wanted Blender but never looked into it, I see now what a great tool Blender is. It would have helped loads with a custom e bicycle I made, regarding custom battery mounts
Oh-ho, and there I thought you were just being extra careful going by eye thanks to the viewing angle of the picture. The technique using fSpy was pretty handy, thanks for breaking all that down for us :3 Aaaaah, a Fairlady Z!! Yaaaay! Can't wait for that! Can't wait for all of these!
Nice tutorial. And I agree that making a mold for casting, rather than printing the final piece, was the better way to go. Wouldn't want a part de-laminating while you were riding.
Love these little technical videos! Very informative and motivating! Also bruh, a Z?!? Much jelly, very excited to see that project!
Well I'll be honest, I'll never make something like this, but I was mesmerized by this process, amazing
Fascinating!!! Awesome work as always. Thanks for sharing
As computer modelling is something I've never had anything to do with really, I find this pretty cool, you make it all seem so simple. I did do some CAD designing for a security camera mount/sunshade a few days ago though, I love Cardboard Aided Design 🤣🤣👍
uh oh. we got a BOM fan
Ha ha. Cool 🙂
I'm glad to see that you are making content that is so varied. As much as I personally miss seeing the fiero, we would be missing out on so much if that was the only thing that drove your content.
Great work!!!! Great content!!! I can't wait for you next video.
I just found your channel and I can say I absolutely love it
Thank you for the video! This will possibly make my day easier in the far future. Btw really excited for the next project. That car that shall not be named is my favourite car ever, and i'm looning forward to seeing what kinds of issues it will give you!
You are truly a jack of all trades. I envy your skill set. Keep up the videos! :)
This young man has all the right tools to have a bright future in engineering and design. Trust me, I know.
wowowow ! what's in the barn.... I can't wait !
You're a smart cookie, Ronnie!
Watching you work on the PC was very relaxing.
Your videos are so helpful AND have lots of funny bits. Thanks for this!
i am definitely excited to see the finished GPZ but also for the new Z project... HOOYAH
Ah great stuff!! Was looking forward to this!
Really very cool. The CAD bit I'm fine with but this is a great way of getting the data when you don't have the parts to measure. I have to say, my FX experience is definitely limited to sitting in front of a screen in the cinema!
I Zee what you did there, brilliant!
I love your outstanding videos! Keep up the great work!
I don't understand 1/10th of that, but I sure appreciate how clever you are in doing it!
That was a nice video. You are a master in storytelling, Ronald! Can't wait to see more GPZ videos (and that 280Z hahaha)
Great video. Always a good video! keep up the great work! Can't wait to see the next video.
Nice explanation, should be possible to follow for the ones who dont understand the tinkering process. Good luck with your products, from a fellow tinkerer.
We have been blessed! Two videos in one month!
Man that next project looks awesome. A complete redo of that nasty dark shop, eh? Oh wait... there's a car...
Nicely done!
Very interesting - andI like the look of that next project!!!
Datsun!!! Man oh man. Talk about exciting!!!
A new project, Deyum! tho can't wait for the upcoming videos (also the comedy part), so keep it up ronnie.
Love the duration edit at the end ;-)
Love the donut Easter egg. Struggling through that series rn.
Nice, thank you for the indebt video, great work 💪🏻😊
I wasn’t expecting a video so soon 😝 ✌🏼😎👍🏼
I don’t know any of that software but it was awesome seeing the process. Have really enjoyed your video series and really looking forward to seeing the GPZ wrapped and the next project car! My buddy in HS (in the 90’s) had a Fiero and of course we all called it the Ferrari. I spent a fair bit of time in that car doing stupid things so it took me back!
Another great video Sir.
Great Work. keep It Upp !!!
Cool Video Thanks And lookimg forward for the next video
Fascinating, even though I lost it after "GPZ fuel tank mount" at about 0:21 seconds in.
Absolutely genius, maybe I'll have a need for this at some point in the future...
Thank you very much I already have a few parts that can only be made with this method ! THANK YOU
What an amazing video thank you, oddly I really fancy a doughnut right now.
Dang man dime! Nice cut
260Z!! oh man CANNOT wait!
8:24 aka the ol' "Measure never, print several times"
Dude this is so cool
I like what you have done, keep up the good work….
nice work 2x👍
If the purpose is to make as OEM part as possible then it is a good plan. Lazy me would have just made visually similar part in CAD, using the distance between bolt holes as a reference. Anyways - good work and looking foward to new episode.
I approve sir!! You did very well on this.. Says the NASA animator of 35 years.
The teaser at the end! 😲
Offtopic: That donuts painting looks delicious!
Brilliant
I got excited for a min, thought it was a build video.
omg omg a 280z!!!!! very excited welcome the world of Datsuns. I have some videos, maybe we can do a Collab. seriously excited to see what you do with the Z!
mmmmmm....donuts..(your picture in the backround). great job and understanding of how it was done. now, if only i had your brain power to do such things. (i'm not an engineer or a CAD user), can't wait for the next video! cheers and take care for now.
I am always happy to see a new video of yours and it is amazing your skills with that 3d printer, are you considering making these and selling to others that need a replacement for the tank mount…
very interesting ronald , i understood about half of what you said but still very interesting
240Z Huh ? Dad had a 280 , great car. Look forward to seeing your seller videos on that one.
The Z!!!!! So stoked
A 280Z!!!!! I'm gonna CRY!!! I CAN'T WAIT!!!
Amazing
goddamn. if i know what car that is, and i think i do... im so excited. One of my dream cars right there.
I click SO FAST when I see new videos from you! Also, dude, the beard is epic. 👌🏼
Teaching is a hard job. You do just fine.
