This is so much more helpful than the one-size-fits-all articles on the web that say “start milking at four weeks and not before”. My first kidding season, the first doe to kid had a single. He would use only one side and the bigger that other teat got the more reluctant he became to even try it. I realized within a couple days of kidding that if I didn’t do something she was going to end up with a blown teat. Milking that side out completely once a day for about four days completely solved the issue. Her udder became perfectly balanced and we saved the teat. Once the teat was brought down to normal size, her kid started using both sides and I could back off on the milking. And with an average daily gain for the first week of life of .5 lbs, he was definitely getting plenty of nutrition. :) So definitely, watch your does! They might need milking much earlier than you were anticipating. And milking can be just the thing to get the kids using a teat that they hadn’t been using. Something I think would be helpful, Delci, would be if you would give a closeup of a doe whose udder is too tight, an udder that the kids are keeping up with okay that does not need to be milked for health reasons, and an udder that is drained, for comparison sake. A lot of pictures of “a full udder” online are pictures of show animals and that can be very confusing for the homesteader who has a heritage sustainable herd at home.

Delci, obviously you make sure to give the newborns the first/colostrum from mom, but my dairy experience with Holsteins is that we always separated them after that and raised the calves on bottles. That was my thinking with goats as well since we'll be focusing on milk production more than raising and selling kids. However, you have caused me to reconsider - at least allowing the kids to be with mom during the day. I suspect mom will be much more content and probably produce more milk - even if the kids are drinking some of it when they're together. Any other suggestions or insight in that regards? Thanks.
I separate at night and keep them on during the day and I get about half of what I normally would if I still do and evening milking. It's nice because if something comes up you done HAVE to milk because the babies will still do it.

Thanks for all your videos! I’m brand new to goats and your videos are so helpful. My second doe just kidded (single kid) but I lost him. 😢 I’ve been milking her constantly in the absence of a kid so she will still produce. Have you experienced this before?
Ah 😕 I’m so sorry. That is so tough to go through. Sounds like you are doing exactly what you need to do! I’m assuming you want her in milk? If you do, you can continue to milk her until about 2 months before she kids next year (if you breed her again). If you don’t want her in milk you can begin to dry her off by starting to milk only in the morning for a week or two and then milk every other day for a week or two and then space it out more and more. Again, I’m sorry you had to go through that!

Not sure I understand the difference between options 2 and 3 ( which is really one option) and option 4. Option 4 is what we'd like to do now, but if we leave the kids with their moms, how would we get the kids to start accepting milk from a bottle?

Can you milk an is the milk good to drink right after they have babies? Like if your just have to milk her because she has way to much?
What age? Is milking out still needed with a first freshener? I honestly haven't checked. I assumed with multiples she would be under enough milk demand, I didn't check. We are past the colostrum. A slightly different question, how much do I feed my doe after kidding? I was advised "give her all she wants". 😳 I am noticing clumpy poops and have already wormed. So I'm concerned she's over eating and may end up sick.
If you start to milk a doe after she weaned her kids will she still produce enough milk? It seems that her production during the weaning should decline. Thank you.

Qasim Javed Is there any goat’s milk available? If not, you can use whole cow’s milk or goat milk replacer. Just don’t ever mix water with the cow’s milk. That will make them sick. I use a 12 ounce plastic bottle with a little nipple I bought at the store.

Demand is part of what regulates milkproduction. If you milk 1-2 times a day as if you are an extra kid from day 1 on, the production will adjust to the extent the doe can. Feed accordingly though and there milking so you can adjust feed to each doe will help.

I just milked once a day in the morning. That way the kids get their fill all day till the end. 😊

Hey. Ok so tell me more about her being wild. I have a Nubian doeling and 2 mini Nubian doelings that don’t want anything to do with me. They are skiddish. I am not used to that. How should I try and help them be more friendly towards me and us bond? I have had them a month and haven’t pushed myself on them; but it’s getting old,
Hey, I know I'm not the person you wanted to answer your question but I have an answer for you. a year ago I rescued a Boer goat and she sounds exactly like your 2 mini Nubians. This is what I did to help my go be more friendly, when u go to feed them, feed them a bit of grain out of your hand outside of the door so your goats are in the pen and u are on the opposite side of the door, then maybe a week or 2 after start hand feeding them in the pen then 2 weeks after feed them from a bucket at feeding time but pet them while they eat. Then also kinda sit with them and any chance u get, pet them. Hope this helps. By the way you may have to adjust the periods of time for your goats like it took me two weeks for each Milestone but it could take you one or it could take you a month I don't know your goats so you may have to adjust the period of timd

I just saw this question! Great answer from equestrian me 😊 What I did with Olivia was catch her. That can be a feat! I understand! But I caught her and then put a long rope on her. I did have to make sure that she wasn’t in an area to get caught but then I caught her by the end of the rope. And then I loved on her. And in her case she was in need of milking. So I also got her into the milking area and (at first) had to force her up on the stand. But working a couple weeks she realized milking stand means: grain and feels good to be milked. I did have to tie up her back leg to milk for the first couple weeks too but she got over kicking after a couple of weeks as well. So catch them, love on them, give them grain, brush them. This is the case if forced friendship until they really are your friend 😊

I’ve never assisted a ewe lambing but I would assume it would be somewhat the same. If I did have a ewe in need I would handle it the same way as I would a goat though. ☺️

Did you make your milking stand?
