From the 2021 film adaptation of Frank Herbert's, Dune.
In the distant future, Duke Leto Atreides, ruler of the planet Caladan, is assigned by the Padishah Emperor Shaddam IV to replace Baron Vladimir Harkonnen as the fiefholder of Arrakis, a harsh desert planet and sole source of "spice", a valuable psychotropic drug that imparts heightened vitality and awareness. Spice is key to interstellar travel, giving Spacing Guild Navigators the ability to guide starships to traverse space instantaneously and safely. Shaddam plots for House Harkonnen to retake Arrakis, secretly aided by his Sardaukar troops, to destroy House Atreides. Leto is suspicious of the Emperor but weighs the risks against the power of controlling Arrakis and making an alliance with its mysterious natives, the Fremen.
The Emperor, suspicious of House Atreides' power, conspires with House Harkonnen to invade Arrakis with the legendary elite soldiers, the Sardaukar. An attempt to assassinate Paul with a hunter-seeker fails. Yueh betrays the Atreides and disables Arrakeen's shields, allowing the Harkonnens and Sardaukar to invade. He incapacitates Leto, planning to exchange him for his wife, who is the Baron's prisoner. Yueh replaces one of Leto's teeth with a poison gas capsule with which the Duke can assassinate the Baron. Leto releases the gas, killing himself and the Baron's Mentat, Piter De Vries, but the Baron survives. Though the Baron has arranged to have Paul and Jessica dropped deep in the desert to die, a compassionate Yueh has left them with stillsuits and other survival supplies. Jessica uses a Bene Gesserit technique called "the Voice" to overpower and kill their captors. Paul and Jessica overnight in the desert where Paul, surrounded by spice, has visions of a bloody "holy war" fought across the universe in his name.

  • In the book, the surviving Atreides forces retreat into the caves in the Shield Walls to try and drag out the defense to buy time for Leto to capture some Sardaukar to parade before the Landsraad. They don't know that he is dead. And that the Baron expected this very tactic and has had old style chemical explosive artillery built. The shells fired by this artillery cannot kill the Atreides Soldiers with their personal combat shields but instead, he uses the artillery to seal the Atreides troops into the cave which become their graves. Some of the troops are able to meet up with the Fremen and withdraw to a rally point or they find ways out of the caves. That's where Gurney rallies what's left of the troops and takes refuge with the smugglers.

The Harkonnen have their terrifying war horn, a simple marching chant and thousands upon thousands of warriors to overwhelm their foe to make up for their lack of skill. And then the Sudaukar are near silent, hovering down with advanced technology to just clinically eradicate their foes. They need no war horn, no pipes. Just their voice, just their alien throat singing preaching of their marshal pride.

  • I love this scene perfectly addressing one of my movie pet peeves: soldiers in a battle just drawing weapons and charging with no regard for formation or tactics. We see that initially with Gurney leading the charge, but that's an emergency reaction. The enemy landed a hundred feet away from them. But as soon as we cut inside, once the Atreides have had a moment to fall back and organize, they have formed a battle line with high ground and polearms that wreck the Harkonnen until the Sardukkar respond with their own clever tactic by using their grav belts to flank from behind.

    @TheManKnownAsAi@TheManKnownAsAi7 ай бұрын
    • I loved this too, I think gurney realised that charging was the only real option. The Harkonnens had armour and numbers but were currently disorganised as they were disembarking. So charging in made sense for once ! And like you said it bought time for the troops in the castle to organise.

His responsibility is to order the battle in such a way as to achieve the objective with as few casualties as necessary. Any man can hold a rifle, but not just anyone can be a general. A soldier falls and there are others to take his place. The same cannot be said for a commander. I get what the phrase is meant to imply, but on its face it's actually quite stupid.

Then there's generals like Napoleon great strategist and war general but when he lead from the front no one followed him (i.e, Battle of Arcole). So there's merit to the quote. But thats just me.

      @FPAlpha@FPAlpha10 ай бұрын
    • Its a good possibility. The shields get levied on how powerful they are but its shown again and again there are actually many workarounds for them. In fact to the point that they actually aren't even all that effective when you leverage their weaknesses. I think the idea is to juxtapose the mentality of the two combatants. The Harkonean using cheating tactics with weapons designed to overcome the shields easily from a distance. Compared to the Atredes who fight honorably up close and give their opponents a chance.

People will always find ways to beat defensive equipment, be it shields, walls, moats etc and with this energy shield technology it is the same. It is only logical that people in Dune have figured out how to destroy shielded ships by using bombs/missiles/drones that are programmed to slow down near impact with the shield but once they pass they will explode. That's not cheating, that's finding countermeasures for something and i'm pretty sure the Atreides and all other houses have such weapons in their arsenal too. Also what is honorable about engaging in hand to hand? Atreides are not dumb, honor doesn't factor in that at all. Had the Atreides known the attack was coming they would have foought conventionally with air forces, guns, artillery and only hand to hand as a last resort. It just makes for a more exciting visual seeing Gurney leading them into a desperate last stand attack because by that point they had already lost but to believe they would give away any military logic to go hand to hand Samurai style is just not realistic in the context who Atreides are.

It’s easier for the bombs and ships to penetrate the shield when they know they exact height and location of every shield, know exactly where every ship will be, know exactly where the Atreides will want to rally troops and so where to slip Sardukar in behind them.

  • It's interesting to note that in the novels, the slow-moving bombs would not have worked. Holtzman shields actually only allow slow moving objects to pass through when tuned for it, and this is done for personal shielding because otherwise, the user would suffocate. They wouldn't be able to walk properly, or grasp objects either. There is also considerable visual distortion if I am not wrong, due to the shield interaction with photons. However, large scale shielding used for vehicles (which are mostly hover-based or flight capable) and for buildings can have their own air recycling systems. So their shields are tuned to reject objects of any speed. The lynchpin of the Harkonnen attack is actually Doctor Yueh sabotaging the shields of the Atriedes compound. That being said, I think it was a great decision to leave out this detail. Explaining to viewers that there are different types of shield settings is a bit dubious in a movie where there's already so much to absorb, and in our modern understanding of technology, industry and defense, it was plausible that one man could sabotage the entire defense of a stronghold back in 1965. Not quite so today, when we expect this level of scale and multi-layered defense.

  • Just as important. In the books, the personal shield has eliminated projectile weapons from the battlefield and now muscle weapons dominate. Even projectiles fired from warbows, crossbows or slings cannot penetrate the shields. Now armies once again assemble into combat formations and engage in hand to hand combat using swords and daggers, What Herbert misses out in this plot twist, is that pikes, spears, halberds and other pole weapons also become effective again. Batter your enemy down to the ground with the axe head of the halberd and then slowly push the spear point through the field to finish him. It also meant that while camouflage remained important for skirmishers and scouts, the primary combat formations could be dressed in uniforms of colors. This is something the old SciFi mini-series gets right. In the book, Thufir Hawat is captured by Sardaukar coming from a cliff using grav belts and w/o shields depending on knife work to defeat the combined Atreides-Fremen force. They are specifically said to be wearing blue uniforms, not environmental suits. This combat is taking part inside the Shield Walls in that part of Arakis which IS NOT the deep desert. When the Sardaukar or Harkonens venture into the desert, they wear stillsuits like everyone else. In the last chapters before Paul's final defeat of the Sardaukar and Harkonens, he uses the people of the villages as shock troops because of their hatred produced by the Sardaukar grabbing whatever women they wanted and decorating their standards with the heads of any who objected. The point is that you don't need standards if you're not going to fight in formations.

The spaceship dropping below looks just as much, but the air bags look like something out of a 1950 sci-fi on how airdrops will work in the 2000s. The ornithopters are also futuristic, but everything is forced into analog as computers are banned, and you see a control panel similar to a 60s chopper. The bombs are nothing crazy (no anti matter or nukes or anything), but easily passed through ships’ shields and detonate inside. The anti aircraft missiles look like something you would see right now in a ground to air defense system And of course there is the one on one combat. Because technology advanced so much, people have to resort back to using swords and spears. And that is truly something amazes me in the movie’s design

  • I love it, the bagpipes, Josh Brolin's smile and the chaos of the situation almost like they are beyond grateful for their doom. Beyond romantic warfare. It shows the love of fighting for something you believe in. And like dude Leto's already beaten. if I would've done anything...I would've done something like the pug from the 1984 version or made them visibly tearing up but this scene is perfect.

  • This movie perfectly encapsulated one of the greatest shames - we get very little time with House Atreides. We get just enough to see how badass they are but it feels like they are taken from us far too soon.

    @lukeycc67@lukeycc672 ай бұрын
    • I'm fine with that, we get enough and they are cool, unlike in the 1984 version where there's too much Atreides stuff for how fcking boring they are portrayed in that version, just the most vanilla good guys from sci fi

    • @@blueshit199 Yeah I absolutely agree, Villeneuve doesn't overindulge and as a result it feels like a tragedy. We're left wanting more but it cannot be because of how quickly the Harkonnen strike happens.

      @lukeycc67@lukeycc672 ай бұрын
    • You get a glimpse at the House so you don't notice any flaws of one. Then, after you lose the House it feels like absolute tragedy. Otherwise you would notice that Atreides are not ideal and it would belittle the tragedy of their loss. For instance, in the book Duke Leto describes assassins' work and how it is important to have spies (which can not be considered noble). Moreover, Atreides suspect Lady Jessiaca to be Harkonnen's agent and interrogate her.

    • As the months went by with no indication that Paul was alive or Atreides reinforcements were coming, the survivors used their smuggling money to get off world and most went home. Gurney refused to leave.

  • Once I saw Dune every said how amazing it's Shields are compared to other franchise. How godlike they are. Yes. These Shields are generously slowing down every projectile that hits them so they can safely pass through them. AMAZING SHIELDS. Truly the work of masters of their craft.

    @TurKlack@TurKlack7 ай бұрын
    • It’s world building. Why wouldn’t technology be developed that would defeat shields? What we see here are projectiles designed to penetrate shields. They’re all extremely situational and less useful than a blade. The darts used are more common but unreliable because they’re relatively inaccurate and a trained combatant will knock it away whilst it is still trying to get through the shield. The bombs are used against a target that isn’t moving. Like shielded fortifications or stationary ships. They aren’t useful against anything that is moving because they have to fall slow enough to not break apart when they hit the shield.

      @Hellhound23691@Hellhound236917 ай бұрын
    • adding to hellhound's comment, these bombs would not even be usable if the main shield hadn't been disabled by the traitor, Yueh. And, before the development of shields, the main weapons used were lasguns, which were basically high energy lasers. These were made obsolete by shields, because when a lasgun hit a shield, it would basically go nuclear. So shields are pretty cool in Dune.

      @nickthephoenix8494@nickthephoenix84947 ай бұрын
    • If you can move, the shields work, if you cannot move, they don't work. They are built for deflection, i.e. to give your much slower human body or ship some chance of preventing the given projectile from reaching your skin/hull by being able to move before full penetration, they are not built to stop bullets nor anything else for that matter it would seem.
