    • I was there in the booming years and again last February. I spent 10 minutes talking to Rupert about the old days and enjoyed the conversation immensely. I’m sure he’s had the same one with 1000’s of people but it felt genuine and sincere. I will miss seeing what once was. I also was happy to see muchibar and sarajewel (butchered I know) as I wondered what had happened to them! Enjoy your retirement!!

  • Here is a message from Rupert and May they asked we help get out there: * MANY THANKS! * ( from the Hello Deli ) Dear Late Show Family, We send our heartfelt thanks to Dave for his gracious and generous kindness; to you, Walter , Nancy & the LS gang for your impeccable planning and HARD WORK. The celebration was a memorable goodbye and more so a sentimental reunion of the Letterman Family. Walter, thanks for your great MC- hosting. The warm and funny speeches from Tom, Kathy, Mike, Chris and Tanya touched us all. We were so pleased by the video presentations from Jill, Donick, Jon, Steve and of course the great Mr. Letterman! And Matt, it meant so much to us that you came from London, even though a Rupert Jee T shirt was a meager compensation. Loving thanks go to all who travelled long distance to be with us. Paul, we cannot thank you enough for the support, on & off camera, you have given us through the years. Your musical performance, enhanced by the Vegas- style dancers livened our celebration all the more! How lucky we were to be among the sharpest minds and hardest workers of the entertainment industry of our Country! Thank you all for honoring us, giving us a journey that dreams are made of! Our love goes out to all of you! Always, Rupert and May Hello Deli NY

I've never wanted to bother him -- because I'm a New Yorker and don't bother celebrities -- but always felt a little starstruck seeing him. This icon of my childhood/adolescence. I KNEW more than 20 years ago that people love The Late Show, from conversations with islanders who worked in Australia. I took Rupert to this island, and the non-Greek Australian family next to us at the restaurant stared, waited politely for us to finish dinner, then approached and identified Rupert. He was in complete shock. This was a vacationing family who told him that Dave was king in Australia. Many others from my island who came back for the summers told me the same!

  • The level of cool is off the chart… so many people showed up. So many great episodes… you could tell Rupert and May were really touched by it all…. The Letterman show been off air 8 years… outside of Conan there hasn’t been anything even close in late night TV.

    • It was a dizzying experience being in that famous lobby that night. The level of cool (and warm-hearted kindness) made the event one that you keep trying to relive in your mind.

  • I had the pleasure of meeting, Rupert, at his Hello Deli when I went to NYC on business and thought I would see how long the line was to get into the Letterman show. Well, the line was LONG and I was parked in a meter spot in front of the McDonalds across the street. So, like the gentelman said in this video ... If you couldn't get into the show, then at least go around the corner and visit Rupert (who was at least a part of the show.) I also ordered a Paul Shaffer Sandwich and stood there talking to Rupert for about 5 minutes while I was eating my sandwich. He took the time to talk and he was friendly. I saved my plate and beverage cup from the Hello Deli ... AND, Rupert, signed my plate before I left. Thanks, Rupert, and you and the Mrs. enjoy your retirement! - Jim Starr - Harrisburg, PA 🤩

    • Wonderful. As Mike (host of our show) said, tens of thousands of people got a ‘Letterman experience’ over the years just by visiting the deli and being made so welcome.

  • No joke, just this past weekend I was looking up the Hello Deli to see if it was still open. I saw that it was closed earlier this year and Rupert was looking to sell the store. I was sad that I never made it out to see the deli but happy that Rupert is getting to enjoy retirement. Seeing this piece is perfect timing and I'm so happy to see the Letterman staff remember Rupert and the Hello Deli! Give the man a nice cold cut platter as a retirement gift.

  • I was a HUGE fan of Letterman and watched every episode I could catch (I'm Australian and it was sometimes hard to find back in the 80's and 90's) but from 2003 I watched EVERY show! and recorded it if I had to miss it anyway! Anyway when my sister went to New York her one job was to get me a Hello Deli shirt!

  • Hello Dave. I just saw you on Password Plus here on the you tube with you and Allen Ludden & Ronny Howard's mom from Happy Days (her name escapes me at the moment--Marion Something-Or-Other). Anyways, I was really rooting for you to win. I know this has nothing to do with Rupert but, as some career advice, keep showing up on the Barbara Gains Show & maybe Password will ask you back.

  • Very nice. And you know the only reason Dave didn't participate is because doing so would have distracted from the celebration for Rupert and May. A class act from all players. So happy to see Paul.

  • I love that Rupert has a Late Show with David Letterman shirt on. I find it odd that Colbert never had him on HIS show. But, I dunno what happened there with that.

    @Writebrain82@Writebrain826 ай бұрын
    • Rupert did appear on Colbert one time on January 7, 2016. Why not regularly, I guess it's just a different show that didn't want to look like it was stealing a bit.
