Halloween is almost here!! 🎃 We make lots of DIY Halloween Props for our yard haunt and our newest project is a GIANT SPIDER made from chicken wire and foam! Inspired by so many giant spider films and other amazing DIY props, this Halloween decoration is the perfect addition to any home haunt or haunted house. "Gertie" is an easy prop inspired by something between a Black Widow spider, Aragog, and the Boggart from Harry Potter. It's easy to build using simple chicken wire, pipe insulation, and expanding foam that you can find at any hardware store.
The great thing about this project is that you can adapt these techniques to make lots of different diy halloween props and decor. Using chicken wire as a base shape and then covering it in foam is a great foundation for making tons of different kinds of DIY props.
If you'd like to make your very own DIY halloween Giant Spider, we encourage you to give this easy Halloween project a try!

The little "things" next to the mouth are pedipalps
So sad, I don't want to pay every month just for one thing. This is so cool, thanks for sharing your video though..... :( really wanted to make this!
@@niterythmweb9152 Plenty of folks just join to get what they want then head out. It’s your call. 🤘🏼😄
No thanks but thank for asking
So u can cancel patreon any time we want?? Is it on the wicked or champion one?
Hi guys. I just wanted to pass on a safety tip. If you're using contact cement I would recommend using a respirator that is designed for chemical exposure (carbon filter). My step dad was a cobbler who used contact cement frequently and ended up getting multiple myeloma. I really enjoy your builds. Stay safe.
That's a great tip, thank you!
@Rosanna Caminero you doing ok? Seems like you're having a stroke.
@@i.dont.read.replies more like a seizure
@@guiltydelirium2532 more like cardiac arrest.
@@notgabby3783 More like a bot poorly programmed..
Yes, was gonna say something similar- if you soak fabric in water, (not dripping), you lay it over the foam, you can smooth it out, once the foam cures the fabric will peel right off leaving less shaping and smoothing with the rasp to be done
I think I like their videos because it's still pretty quick but they also show the struggles of winging it and attempting different things. Makes me feel more confident to try stuff even if I fail a little 😅
Your next video should be how you store all of your creations. I'm fighting for space with my wife (she likes christmas decorations) for the ever growing pile of Halloween decorations. If you can find the 3M froth-pak spray foam can be sprayed in much thinner, smoother, and stronger layers.
I was going to type the exact same thing!!!
I agree! I’m in the same battle, but with myself. Ha. I love Halloween & Xmas, & I’m at the point I may need to rent a storage unit. 🤦🏻♀️ Half of our garage is full of decorations, alone. My partner is not too happy, but he doesn’t get much say in the matter. 😉 I would love to know how they store this beautiful creature & if it stands up to time. I worry the body will get damaged.
Wait, we don't leave these up year-round?
@@BigHackAttack that would be nice right?
YES! I’m getting better at considering storage options (like removable parts and attaching with screws or all-thread or slip-on PVC), but I want to make all the GIANT things and am quickly running out of storage space!
Good job on the spider :) I started making mine about 3 weeks ago - I tried the chicken wire approach, but it's just super hard. I tried forming a ball for the 'egg sac' bit out of high tensile wire and wrapping it in that black weed-covering material - also a failure. I ended up just buying a beach ball ( like $4.95 for a 36" beach ball) - wrap it in cling film ( saran wrap), spray foam around it, deflate the ball, pull it out, finish the bottom. Worked fabulously. :)
I love spiders I think there adorable!
FYI: Immediately after covering the surface with foam, take a spray bottle and spray the entire thing down with water. Really get it good and soaked. Within a few minutes it will start to develop a skin. No waiting until the next day, and then having to do a bunch of messy shaving and carving on it. In about 15 to 20 minutes you can literally take your hands and push and squeeze on it, using your hands and fingers to flatten it out and mold shapes into it, and you won't get any foam on your hands because the water causes the outer layer to form a skin. Keep in mind, this expanding foam stuff doesn't dry; it cures, and what cures it is the humidity in the air. The more moisture, the faster the cure. Which is why spraying it down with a spray bottle forms a skin within minutes and allowed you to form it with your hands. A little trick I leaned from Stilt Beast Studios. Here's an example of him making a mask out of spray foam, and how he wets it down and then is able to mold it with his fingers. 🡺 kzhead.info/sun/e9CAYK1pkIJ3f3k/bejne.html
Awswsedrweryyyu,,.😭😭
that's a pretty huge tip, thanks!
@@michaeldiaz6023 huh? Ha.
Great tip. I was gonna ask, how does this hold up to weather & rain? Will the rain mess up the foam if it gets wet?
I love Stilt Beast!
The face doodads are called pedipalps (for the long ones) and chelicerae (for the short ones, this is where the fangs would be if the spider has them). The more you know ;)
I know a lot about pedipalps due to my odd obsession of the spider’s reproduction cycle (an obsession that I myself didn’t know I had)
nice you can google things...................
I have arachnophobia 😭
Mee too
You guys have saved me soooo much money when it comes to Halloween decorating! Plus everything you guys make can just plug right into real big professional haunt attractions. SOOOO COOL! An CONGRATULATIONS 👏 🙌 ON REACHING OVER 200K SUBS. You guys earned them. Impressed!
"Saved Money" by the time you spend all that money on the material that they used to make that thing you can buy one, PVC, Chicken wire, Foam stuff, pipe insulation, that stuff is not cheap these days , not to mention the time needed, just buy a fake spider on line, it would just add up to about the same probably cheaper.
@@jm1551701 it's still cooler
@@jm1551701 but can be expensive
Good job every time I try to do things like this I fail and I fail bad 😝
There is never a fail, just a prop that turns into something slightly different than you planned. 😄😄😄
It'd be super cool if you started including a side list in the video or like a pop up type thing of tools and stuff used and then costs/location of the materials you find or buy 🕷🕷🕷🕷 regardless, i appreciate all the links in description and love your videos and you guys
Or measurements of how long they cut the materials
Exactly. Even just what they used for e.g., the dimensions of the chicken wire used for the side body, the length of spider legs, the number of cans of spray foam, etc. would be extremely useful, even if it's just a rough estimate.
This is epic! You could, optionally, make it more terrifying if you added noise and/or movement to her, maybe some lights in the eyes too! Great build! I love seeing what you guys come up with and create!!
Yes! Glowing red eyes.
I'm assuming that this is the same sort of technique you could use to make a creepy snowman!
I have a recommendation, would it be possible to include a measurement list or something like that for projects? I am in the middle of creating this spider and find myself trying to fill in the gaps with the glazed over info from the video-I’m a noob to stuff like this 😅 However, great video and I’m glad I found this channel!
Late reply I know, but they just show the basics so you can up or down scale the project to fit your budget or yard. I’m currently attempting this project right now.
@@jamesshamblin5251 Totally understand, but as a noob to DIY yard things it helps to have a starting point and I can then scale from there if I choose to do so.
it's the propellant that eats in spray paint, if you don't use name brand loctite ( I don't) just layer it more slowly and from a greater distance so the propellant is dispersed more, won't eat it up that much. Name brand loctite won't get eaten that much at all
Love watching your ideas come to life!!! I'm definitely going to try to make this one! FYI...my grandpa told me, you should always stomp on your working gloves before putting them on, you never know what might have crawled in them while you were away... like a spiders🕷🕸
I’ve never seen something I find so cool but terrifying at the same time
My thoughts exactly haha
I hate spiders, I have arachnophobia, but really creepy and awesomely amazing
Amazing who needs store bought props when you can design and build your own. Great job as always.
Right?! Makin your own is the best
@@WickedMakers You & the folks from my area's Skeleton Crew Theater should do a collaboration! You can find them on Facebook
It would've also been cool to see you make a fluffy spider! It would cover the foam texture and there are so many cool colors and patterns of real tarantulas to base it on. plus I feel like I always see faux fur stuff at goodwill that's ripe for harvesting
Yeah some day!!
id be worried about the fur going nasty from rain
@jordanclarke2001 yeah, wouldn't want your halloween prop to look gross! /j
just the kind of project im looking to do! ive been thinking about how to make a giant fly for our beetlejuice themed decorations, this hits it on the nose!
Finished mine today. Was a really fun project. Pretty much followed your build all the way. Used a heat gun to weld the pool needles. Worked great. A ton of moments where you feel like its going wrong… but then it all comes together! I only found this because my wife bought some of the beef carcass netting to create the web, but I had no idea what to do… so I followed you instructions there, made your hanging egg sacks, and finished with this! Really appreciate the knowledge !
I have arachnophobia and I 100% know what Jay means, merely looking at close-up photos of spiders make me feel like they're crawling on me! Speaking of arachnophobia, this is an awesome build, scary as hell, 10/10 spooky!
I made it through this…somehow! Arachnids are not my favorite thing, but this came out stellar!
Here’s a trick heat the “insulation tubes” with a heat gun and you can actually melt the tube & it will act as glue onto itself. You can even heat it and manipulate the tubes with your hands to taper the tube. This will work on pool noodles too
Would be really cool is fix a can of spray sting that when some one passed it it sprays them with webbing
The 'big round but' is not full of venom😂 ...it's a lot scarier - it can be full of eggs, or even live young🤮 Edit: the grabby things next to the mouth are called mandibles
That is…so much worse lolol
Actually in spiders the short little "arms" right next to their fangs are called pedipalps! They are "feet for palpating"
@@kainapplekreatures5855 Nice! I had only heard mandibles😃
@@ingajohannsdottir1180 yeah! I had to share because I think it's such a neat word!
Really well done. I used a yoga ball and mannequin to build a drider.
You guys are so fun to watch - glad you’re not my neighbors though as you’d be showing me up at Halloween each year big time! Thanks for sharing your skills and fun!
I know that's right. I like having the best halloween house on the block. 👻🎃💀🐍👾
The more the merrier! It doesn't have to be competition. I'm just glad when other people decorate.
The short legs at the front of the spiders head is called its pedipalps. They're dual purpose - they allow a spider to taste and they also use them as hands to pull food toward their mouths.
Can tell you guys did an amazing job when this creation gives me the same creeps a real spider does!! Crazy!
A heat gun works great to use on the pipe insulation or pool noodles, seals them together by melting them.
WOWWWW!! She came out great! 🕷🕷🕷
Dig the Dream Theater shirt. Spray foam is good for many things. In high school. Instead of shoving freshmen in lockers and filling it with shaving cream. We used spray foam. We realized it recreated little Han Solos in carbonite.
I love Gertie!
I really wanted to make a big spider so this video was perfect! Though I can't use foam since I live in an apartment. But I'll try to figure out another way.
What if you try paper mache ! ? 🤔 Then seal it with a water proof sealer. 👻
@@suepeterson5675 Even painting with acrylics will do a good job of sealing. We made a giant mushroom once and only painted it and it lasted well over a year outside everyday.
Wow! Your spider looks amazing! I think the textured foam actually adds to the organic look. I also loved how much fun you had making this… your constant smiles and laughter make this one of my favourite builds. Happy Halloween (or Hop-tu-Naa as we say where I’m from on the Isle of Man in the UK 😄).
I always beat my gloves against a hard surface before wearing to squish any possible spiders lurking inside.
Gerty the girthy spider is definitely joining the crowd in the yard.
You guys must be the favorite Halloween house in the neighborhood!
Ok I would be terrified to go to their house on Halloween THEIR DECORATIONS ARE TOO REAL
I have to do that as well 😍
Do ittttt
I wonder what they used for the stake to stabilize it. Im thinking about putting this on my roof. However, I don't know how to attach it to my shingles without worrying about it getting unstable.
They “hearted” this comment but didn’t reply. 🤦🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️
do your neighbors know you make your own halloween decorations? or do they think you guys have a really good decoration supplier 😂
That turned out really well ya'll!
wire brush attachments for angle grinders work for foam sculpting too. I use mine with a vacuum shroud
I love all your DIY videos, especially this one with the spider. I tried it myself, except I made it white with different fluorescent colors that glowed when I put it outside at night under a black light. It was so awesome. Thanks for the ideas & keep them coming! Cheers, Blake
you both are so good at this
Can you guys do a skibidi toelit animatronic?
Gertie is beautiful! She's also hungry.....how about some giant flies with human or skull heads?
I think you may have forgotten to add the PVC pipes + PVC pipe connectors to the list of materials required in the video description.
As a tarantula keeper I totally approve!! I need to make one!! Love it
Love this! And am definitely making this year. About how many cans of foam did you use for the body?
I believe it was 3-4 (ish).
I have arachnophobia and I was fine watching this video but when you showed the spider photos I got the chills 🕷️
So besides a spooky-nerd, Jay is also a prog-nerd?! Awesome! 🤘Caught in a web, ey?
Gertie looks awesome! You guys are so creative! I love watching you!
Now that you made Aragog we're afraid you guys will have to make the basilisk, Harrison is working on his Koala box right now an loves them.
Hahah yes! Full size.
Spooktober has begun and with it Halloween fun
How long did you cut the foam pieces for the legs ...just Binge watched your videos ..
Looks great! Happy Halloween from the UK 🇬🇧
It looks fantastic, though for my own personal taste, I would prefer a smoother finish on the spider. Again, just my preference.
Thx for these tutorials! I just watched another video where the person used a spray bottle to spritz water over the foam and was then able to pat it with his hands to give it better texture. I think I'm gonna mesh your creativity and his together when I do mine (I'm not big on all that sanding lol)
That foam will stick to itself very well. If you use a heat gun, no blue needed.
Wow! Another Awesome Halloween prop! Gotta thank you guys for your inspiration last year, during COVID. I took your Candy Slide idea and modified it for our Beetlejuice theme and made a Sand Worm candy slide using the same build. Let me know how I can send you a pic! Great job!
Jay I am 100% with you getting creeped out by pictures of spiders! One time this huge spider was on my porch and I described it to a friend and she said “sounds like a wolf spider” and I googled it and FREAKED ALL THE WAY OUT. Don’t google that, Jay. DON’T. Just know that we live in the same part of Texas so your yard is full of them too and they really are beneficial and won’t hurt you but THEY ARE SUPER SCARY LOOKING. 🤣
You know, if you went with a layer of the seal and fill stuff they make for people who want to go over brickwork or similar, you could get a more smooth look as well.
this is one of the best giant spiders I've seen, well done.
Gerty came out looking amazing! Congrats on reaching over 200k subscribers!!! ♥
Thank you!! 😄
@@WickedMakers You're very welcome! 😄
Love this so much
I find the amount of fun you two are genuinely having as entertaining as the project you end up making. Thanks!
I've wanted a way to build a giant spider that was also easily stored for a long time. This is perfect. I hope I get a chance to try it sometime.
Wow! That looked like a lot of work but the end result is phenomenal 👍
Since you did not paint on the hourglass mark you ended up making Gordy into a male.
This one is Crazy. at night this will startle the "heck" out of people. Awesome
It’s not a stinger, it’s a spinner!!! Also with Black Widows, the females are the ones with the hourglass shape on them, and only on the underside of their thorax. The males have red - orange markings (usually dashes or spots) on top of their thorax. Now you know! 😁
Would also love to see you guys try to create a creepy 5-foot haunted tree
Absolutely loved making this with the kids this year. It turned out fab! Wish I could show you a pic! Thanks guys
Great spider - has really inspired me to try!!! Any tips how I can also add some lights to the eyes?
We made this! We couldn't get the fangs right but it turned out amazing! Thank you so much for this awesome tutorial!
Can y'all make a video on a werewolf? My husband and I have a werewolf skeleton and we covered the head in a werewolf mask that comes with his werewolf gloves and we are lost on how to cover the rest of his body. Please and thank you in advanced. Also I am willing to take advice from anyone in the comment section.
That looks awesome! Cheers
Wow fantastic spider Halloween prop very realistic . Thank you for sharing 🎃💀🧟♀️☠️🧙♀️👻🎃
That came out so good!!🕸🕷
This is so awesome! Y’all always do a great job and are so entertaining to watch! Thank y’all 😊
I am tatrfid of spider 🕷️!!😱😱😱😱 and happy Halloween!!!!!!🎃🎃🎃🎃🎃🎃🎃🎃🎃🎃🎃
Having made plenty of costume and functional armour and weapons for Cosplay to Combat.... your techniques are splendid! Thank you for including your mistakes and adjustments. I believe that is important for folks that are experimenting.
I usually don't do over the top decorations for Halloween but this looks amazing!!! I definitely want to build it! What did you use/how did you prop it up in the grass?
I believe they used the 12 gauge wiring extended so that it can be ancored into the ground
My dad said I’m like a special effects artist but you should put some kind of lights in the spider like Christmas lights with like different colors like red orange Halloween colors and then plug them in and then it’ll make the spider glow
This looks amazing!!!🕷the long pointed legs & shiny eyes really add to the creep factor!🙌🏻reminds me of Aragog from Harry Potter! I’m scared of spiders too so I totally would’ve been freaked out by looking at those reference pictures too😂
This is AMAZING. 😮 Still watching all your other Halloween DIY videos. You guys are awesome. 👏🏻
Great project! How long are each of the leg segments? Trying to make sure to buy enough pipe insulation to complete our project. Thanks for the great content. Just subscribed!
Great project guys! The spider came out great and I love how you did the legs! Thanks for sharing!
Lol the "creepy things" beside the fangs are called pedipalps and are used to help hold food, communicate and with males are extra flashy to help get a mate
I absolutely love your ideas! Do you think you guys could do a grand finale video of what you yard looks like with all of your decorations this year? My husband and I just got everything we need for the fireflies! I can wait to make them! Thank you for sharing your ideas with those of us who struggle with them.
Amazing.
I just found your channel and I really love your videos Halloween crafts year round?!? YESS PLEASSSSSSE!!
You should paint the red hourglass on her back....plus she's just a little too much black....maybe a little bit more of the drybrushing. Also, maybe add some fur to the leg joints...make it kinda scarier. :) Just some thoughts and ideas. :)
i try not to use this kind of foam, but it brings a very good structure in this case. i don't know what the harmless alternative for environment is, especially when planning so big and even bigger surfaces.
