Halloween is almost here!! 🎃 We make lots of DIY Halloween Props for our yard haunt and our newest project is a GIANT SPIDER made from chicken wire and foam! Inspired by so many giant spider films and other amazing DIY props, this Halloween decoration is the perfect addition to any home haunt or haunted house. "Gertie" is an easy prop inspired by something between a Black Widow spider, Aragog, and the Boggart from Harry Potter. It's easy to build using simple chicken wire, pipe insulation, and expanding foam that you can find at any hardware store.
The great thing about this project is that you can adapt these techniques to make lots of different diy halloween props and decor. Using chicken wire as a base shape and then covering it in foam is a great foundation for making tons of different kinds of DIY props.
If you'd like to make your very own DIY halloween Giant Spider, we encourage you to give this easy Halloween project a try!

My step dad was a cobbler who used contact cement frequently and ended up getting multiple myeloma. I really enjoy your builds. Stay safe.

  • Yes, was gonna say something similar- if you soak fabric in water, (not dripping), you lay it over the foam, you can smooth it out, once the foam cures the fabric will peel right off leaving less shaping and smoothing with the rasp to be done

  • Your next video should be how you store all of your creations. I'm fighting for space with my wife (she likes christmas decorations) for the ever growing pile of Halloween decorations. If you can find the 3M froth-pak spray foam can be sprayed in much thinner, smoother, and stronger layers.

My partner is not too happy, but he doesn’t get much say in the matter. 😉 I would love to know how they store this beautiful creature & if it stands up to time. I worry the body will get damaged.

  • Good job on the spider :) I started making mine about 3 weeks ago - I tried the chicken wire approach, but it's just super hard. I tried forming a ball for the 'egg sac' bit out of high tensile wire and wrapping it in that black weed-covering material - also a failure. I ended up just buying a beach ball ( like $4.95 for a 36" beach ball) - wrap it in cling film ( saran wrap), spray foam around it, deflate the ball, pull it out, finish the bottom. Worked fabulously. :)

  • FYI: Immediately after covering the surface with foam, take a spray bottle and spray the entire thing down with water. Really get it good and soaked. Within a few minutes it will start to develop a skin. No waiting until the next day, and then having to do a bunch of messy shaving and carving on it. In about 15 to 20 minutes you can literally take your hands and push and squeeze on it, using your hands and fingers to flatten it out and mold shapes into it, and you won't get any foam on your hands because the water causes the outer layer to form a skin. Keep in mind, this expanding foam stuff doesn't dry; it cures, and what cures it is the humidity in the air. The more moisture, the faster the cure. Which is why spraying it down with a spray bottle forms a skin within minutes and allowed you to form it with your hands. A little trick I leaned from Stilt Beast Studios. Here's an example of him making a mask out of spray foam, and how he wets it down and then is able to mold it with his fingers. 🡺 kzhead.info/sun/e9CAYK1pkIJ3f3k/bejne.html

  • I've wanted a way to build a giant spider that was also easily stored for a long time. This is perfect. I hope I get a chance to try it sometime.

  • Since you did not paint on the hourglass mark you ended up making Gordy into a male.

  • It’s not a stinger, it’s a spinner!!! Also with Black Widows, the females are the ones with the hourglass shape on them, and only on the underside of their thorax. The males have red - orange markings (usually dashes or spots) on top of their thorax. Now you know! 😁

  • Can y'all make a video on a werewolf? My husband and I have a werewolf skeleton and we covered the head in a werewolf mask that comes with his werewolf gloves and we are lost on how to cover the rest of his body. Please and thank you in advanced. Also I am willing to take advice from anyone in the comment section.

  • My dad said I’m like a special effects artist but you should put some kind of lights in the spider like Christmas lights with like different colors like red orange Halloween colors and then plug them in and then it’ll make the spider glow

  • This looks amazing!!!🕷the long pointed legs & shiny eyes really add to the creep factor!🙌🏻reminds me of Aragog from Harry Potter! I’m scared of spiders too so I totally would’ve been freaked out by looking at those reference pictures too😂

  • Lol the "creepy things" beside the fangs are called pedipalps and are used to help hold food, communicate and with males are extra flashy to help get a mate

  • You should paint the red hourglass on her back....plus she's just a little too much black....maybe a little bit more of the drybrushing. Also, maybe add some fur to the leg joints...make it kinda scarier. :) Just some thoughts and ideas. :)

  • i try not to use this kind of foam, but it brings a very good structure in this case. i don't know what the harmless alternative for environment is, especially when planning so big and even bigger surfaces.
