Yes indeed, Jonathan Ferguson, the keeper of firearms and artillery at the Royal Armouries Museum in the UK, which houses a collection of thousands of iconic weapons from throughout history. A quite esteemed fellow.
16:30 Actually yes. WV manufactured a lot of black powder guns. Notably Harpers ferry armory (which remains you can visit in 76).
I may have to fire 76 back up just to visit it. We only have a handful of HF-made guns, obviously many more in US museums.

Johnathan, there is a “black powder” only season for Whitetail deer in West Virginia every year. While many people use the more modern “in-line” smoothbore guns, there are still many people who use reproduction muzzle-loaders no different than what would have been used to hunt Whitetail 150-200 years ago. My father has, hanging on a wall in his basement, a “Virginia Rifle” manufactured in the 1750s, which belonged to one of our ancestors (I believe the brother of his great-great-great grandfather) and which was used in or around the time of the American Revolution.

it's mentioned on a loading screen that many of the black powder weapons in the area were clamed from the various civil war collections in the are and that they were well antiquated even by the time of the bombs falling
Makes a lot of sense.

So, with the muzzle loaders in 76, they're part of the games smaller references to West Virginia's role in the American Civil War; there were several in game events on launch that were related to burying a soldiers remains or fighting other players wearing Union or Confederate uniforms. These were events during the games launch, but they had enough issues that they've been removed since. The developers haven't expand on the Civil War stuff since.
The soldiers burial is a daily quest largely buried under all the other dailies aswell as it required players to have a shovel, often found nearby, to bury the remains. The PVP event of union vs confederate was never popular so it was removed fairly early.

21:00 the game didn't only expand, but respectfully brought back classic weaponry. Fallout 2 had gauss pistols, and Fallout Tactics had the gauss miniguns! I've plenty to complain about with 76, but the attention to detail and care that goes into bringing back classic concepts is something these devs do exceptionally! The Gauss Shotgun is new thanks to 76 though I think, just nice to see things come back y'know?
Glad to see a mention of the riveted guns from The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. Utterly love those designs, pure dieselpunk
That blunderbuss that Jonathan showed us is amazing!
Fallout has had arcane and magic elements in the series since the very beginning. The entire plot of fallout 1 for example revolves around defeating a Psykers including telekinetics, Pyrokinetics, and Telepaths. It’s been a very consistent throughline for much of the series. Fallout 2 even has you help a ghost out.
Sad, the light machine gun was left out. Got to give some love to the MG42.
There are alot more guns to cover in FO76... I was waiting for a video like this and i LOVE it already
There are perk synergies (Stabilized) for power armor and heavy weapons. So in a build designed to use these to their fullest potential there are benefits for the power armor over being without it.
You guys could easily do a part two to this. There are plenty more guns in fallout 76. I really wanted to see him react to the railway rifle. Which is a personal favorite of mine. there’s also the handmade, the fixer, grenade launchers, cannons,Tommy guns.
The Tommy guns and Railway rifle were already in 4, which I think he reacted to already.
I laughed at the black power rifle when he said theyre probably not from a museum....which in the game they are proving his point of contention lol
Fun fact about the 10mm SMG- the receiver is a Browning machine gun receiver flipped around and squashed! The designer consciously wanted to mimic that "movie gun" feel where it apes a real design but in a different way.
@2:00 actually there are several modern reproductions of the 1873 made in .44 Magnum. Seeing as how the society in FO in 2077 is still as obsessed with westerns as America was in IRL in the 50s, a market for repro cowboy guns would be even stronger than it is now.
Oh, yeah. Revolvers and 1911’s are still possibly the most common handgun in WV overall, except maybe for Glocks.
@@generaljesus9825 heck, if we define 'Glock' as broadly as we do revolvers & '1911s', as in polymer framed striker fired semi-auto with at least 15 round capacity, then probably close to 95% of guns in WV right now are those 3.
@gamespot In the game ARMA Reforger, when Johnathan Ferguson reacted initially he said the M16A2 gun had too much wear on the gun and in the newest update they removed the wear and listened!
it's wild how Bethesda loves using left-handed guns to show the chambering animation in in first-person (eg, FO4's hunting rifle, the "870" in FO76)
My favourite weapon I picked up in 76 was a Black Powder Rifle with Instigating on it, which does double damage to targets at full health. It SHREDS. I called it Partystarter.
So regarding the Nuka Cola rifle... This is a nod. In 1986, Winchester and Coca-Cola created a promotional brand-crossover 94E 3030 and 1500-XTR, sold as a set. 2500 sets were ordered to be manufactured, but they stopped at just under 1600 after Coca Cola pulled out and cancelled. The product pairing was part of Coca Cola's 100th anniversary celebration, and was perhaps somewhat shortsighted given the era. The weapons now command a hefty price at auction, with one auction Starting at 1795 back in 2020.
I just looked it up and I am beyond dissapointed. It's just a plain old looking rifle with Coca Cola written on the side. I was hoping it'd be all bright Red with White accents.
@@TheFirstCurse1 reality is often disappointing.

I recently watched Kunk on Earth, and I was pleasantly surprised to see you on it
Happy to see Jonathan get a better camera and mic.
Wanted to point out, in 76, there are perks that significantly increase heavy weapon stability and decrease bullet spread while in power armor. At least I think? It's been a few years.
The Warmaster of Terra, Horus Lupercal commands Mister Ferguson to review the weapons of the Valkyria chronicles franchise.
That old single action is so smart. When you think about when it was made the little click is really satisfying and tells you, you're good to load the next round.
I think Jonathon Ferguson, Keeper of Firearms and Artillery at the Royal Armories Museum in the UK (which houses a collection of thousands of weapons from throughout history), might be mistaken here. The SMG from Fallout 76 is supposed to resemble the Fallout 3 10MM SMG.
Hearing jonathan talk about that colt, I'd love to see him comment on the gun handling in a game like Call of Juarez Gunslinger, especially the perk to reload with the cylinder spinning the whole time
I think Johnathan would get a real kick out of Ultrakill's weaponry, that'd be nice to see.
Wish I knew half of what Jonathan knows about firearms , Great Video 💯💥💥💥💥💥💥💥
Absolutely loved the video as always! In the games defense, the high damaged of the black powder weapons is allowed and or needed as an offset to the slow reload time for balancing. Also the leveling system (though needed due to being a multiplayer open world game) is more of a holdover from its original form upon release. In the initial release enemies would grow stronger depending on the region, and so as you gained higher levels, you needed higher damaging weapons to deal with new threats etc. This allowed for players to have a good idea of the grade and ability of their equipment, relative to the strength of the enemies in a zone this was changed in future updates where now the enemies level is scaled to each players level (so if two players are looking at the same enemy to one it may be a level 100 and to the other its a level 5) so that newer/low level players could play with their higher level friends. Also (something that is still relevant) is that balance wise it allows the game to level lock certain weapons so that you don't have a level 1 player running around with a fatman or auto grenade launcher just decimating all the low level enemies and/or causing a mess. Fun fact: Fallout 4 had a similar system to this, though being a single player game was able to be implemented more subtly. At higher levels enemies start using/spawning less with pipe weapons and more with combat rifles etc. the higher levels allow you to unlock more levels of gun nut, allowing you to modify your weapon to deal more damage to the now higher level and stronger enemies etc.
Harper’s Ferry in West Virginia used to be one of the 2 arsenals in the country that made black powder muzzle loading rifles. It was raided by John Brown before the Civil War and became a point of contention during the war. Kind of interesting.
The “yeah” and pause after the talk about the lack of handling change between power armour and no power armour was brilliant 😂
I use the Vampire's Gold .50 BMG as my go-to Big Gun. :) I've also got the exploding bullets mod, too. :) I added the Bayonet mod to my Blackpowder rifle. It has a brass handle, like the real ones, but the blade doesn't curve up. They used a Zouave bayonet as the model to mount on the 1841.
For the Colt Single Action Army i could imagine the first person animation to work, is that under the barrel there is some sort of button-pressed mechanism to spin the cylinder around (instead of ejecting the bullet-cases). But since the third person animation is completely different, there is no excuse for that. xD
I would lay down my life for this man; Jonathan Ferguson, the Keeper of Firearms and Artillery at the Royal Armories Museum in the UK, which houses a collection of thousands of iconic weapons from throughout history
I liked the bakelite battery on a gauss shotgun. Complements nixie tubes nicely.
Ah another great video with Jonathan Ferguson, the Keeper of Firearms and Artillery at the Royal Armories Museum in the UK, which houses a collection of thousands of iconic weapons from throughout history.
I mean there has been a decent bit of supernatural stuff in Fallout so a gun regenerating health from hitting someone can make sense
Seeing Jonathan react to the Single Action Army almost makes me wish for a Fistful of Frags episode.
With regards to the 10mm Smg it is a pre war weapon. In general fallout for ballistic weapons follow a very unique design philosophy due to the resource wars and lack of oil supply most modern weapons in the lore are basically just steel aluminum and wood with some rubber. Very little plastics or bakelite. Giving it a very unique design aesthetic as well since it blends in ww2 weapons (which were still in use by many groups), 70s esque weapons, and mashed up modernish weapons with some post war hodgepodges as well. The barrel modifications regarding it are likely post war but do still fit with the weapon designs we’ve seen prior of it.
10:56 There is actually a perk in the game called stabilized that makes heavy weapons more accurate while in power armor
Although they're older, I think Jonathan Ferguson, Keeper of firearms and artillery at the Royal Armories Musuem, would have a field day with the Soldier of Fortune games. Especially with the Desert Eagle reload animation.
Can't believe you didn't show him the single action with a 24 round magazine
Clip.
Yeah, the lack of velocity imparted by black powder weapons(comparatively speaking, of course) is the reason for the 2-bore and 4-bore "stopping rifles". When you absolutely had to put something down, the only way you could reliably do that was with a heavier bullet, since there was a notable limit on the pressure you could develop, and so the velocity you could impart, on a bullet.
In colts first Fallout scene when he is butting his hand under barrel he uses his little finger while gripping in small lifting movement to rotate the barrel.
Knock volley gun mentioned, now that’s soldiering!
16:45 YES actually, in 76 you DO retrieve them from the Museum in West Virginia at the old battlefield re-enactment and cemetery location lol.
in power armor I get the big heavy guns. Like I go heavy weapon builds, but I always rock power arm when I use those.
This whole Jonathan Ferguson, the Keeper of Firearms & Artillery at the Royal Armories Museum in the UK, which houses a collection of iconic from throughout history meme, reminds me of when the Arkham subreddit went completely insane.
24:20 You can see that hes absolutely chuffed to bits at the fact that he knew what he was talking about with flying bugs
You should show Jonathan the Operation Sunburst Animation by SODAZ when its finished! I think Jonathan would LOVE seeing all the guns depicted And how they're used Both by and against Power Armor
just a point the handling of heavy weapons do change with power armor if you have the perks like 'stabilised' etc.
The two games that I'd really like Jonathan Ferguson (the Keeper of Firearms and Artillery at the Royal Armories Museum in the UK, which houses a a collection of thousands of Iconic weapons from throughout history) to react to are Warframe and Nikke. As... unique as the latter game is, there is at least one gun nerd on its development team which means that they have a lot of interesting reload animations, including one where a character swaps out their entire barrel, rather than a magazine or any other ammo storage/feed device.
I think Signalis guns would be a fun video to go over
With the Colt Single, I just imagine they're pushing the ejecting rod and using their pinkie to advanced the cylinder
Regarding the .50 mechine gun (and the gatling gun and similar weapons), I always imposed a restriction on myself that I could ONLY ise it while in power armor, because otherwise it just felt... silly. Honestly, I think an actual game mechanic that prevents some weapons being used when not in power armor would be a neat addition.
One that could be interesting is armored core 6 guns. I know big mech game and not all the weapons use bullets but I think hearing about what could've inspired some of them could be cool.
didnt you used to be able to get like a chevy branded winchester when you bought a pickup truck? very reminiscent of the western spirit at 22:15 cant remember exactly what brand of truck it was.
I will always watch these videos thanks for making them Gamespot
17:13 180gr. .50cal roundball can get over 2,000fps on a magnum powder charge with a tight patch. People greatly underestimate the power of muzzle-loaders. It just takes three days to load, and will massively rust if not cleaned immediately after shooting.
i always thought the 10mm smg reminded me of a massive Vz. 61 with the top folding wire stock
From my experience in 76 one of the most reliable places to farm for black powder weapons was a Civil War museum, so I absolutely had a few guns that almost certainly would have exploded in my hands if it was real life lol
I am curious how much Jonathan's knowledge of firearms and artillery extends to things like vehicle mounted weapons or tank turrets. I have been playing a lot of Sand Land this weekend and would be interested in seeing an expert react to the weapons that you can put on your vehicles.

Just a heads up.. Gauss pustole is started back at Fallout 2, and the gaus minigun first apear is Fallout Tactics ad the last map.
I love that this went straight from the 10mm SMG to the M2 MG, as the 10mm SMG is, somewhat infamously, just a small, backwards M2.
All I could think when I saw the bees was “is this a stand up fight or another bug hunt.”
Would love to see a breakdown of the weapons from The Division series
Just a note with the pump action, the first person reload animation is a bit fudged when the player pushes shells into the tube with the action open. On an 870 that would be impossible. Love the content!
I'd still like to see you take a look at Planetside 2, which uses "Gauss Rifle" to mean "conventional ammo with a coilgun boosting the bullet in the barrel".
I LOVE the bulldog gatlin in 76. Heavy weapons, power armor builds are my main and I choose the Bulldog Gatlin every time. Especially if it’s explosive with the right build to make you just a devastating tank.
I love this ongoing meme of mentioning Jonathan’s FULL title every time his name is mentioned as if it is an absolute must. It makes me chuckle every time I read a comment and it takes me 12 seconds to just read his name!😂
I love that he's a Fallout fan as well as an expert. Love these series.
From the 3rd person view of the reload of the M2 it looks like the player is putting the ammo box holder on his thigh to help balance it while holding the pistol grip.
don't forget the stabilize perk it only works in power armor for heavy weapons. it adds accuracy
There's still 1, 2 and Tactics. They all have pretty impressive voice casts for games at the time.
You can actually retrieve some of the black powder weapons from John Brown's Fort which is both a museum in game and IRL Is in fact right next door Harper's Ferry Armory where massive numbers of firearms were produced with the "Fort" being the armory's firehouse where John Brown made his last stand and was the only original building of the armory left standing after the Civil War.
21:25 Fallout Tactics already had a gauss pistol, a gauss rifle and a gauss minigun which fire the 2mm EC magnetic projectiles.
I think I see the trigger finger twitching when the cylinder rotates on the Single Action Army. Maybe they thought it had the feature found on some later revolvers that let you rotate the cylinder with the trigger when the hammer is half cocked?
So for the single action revolver (say that ten times fast) there's a reason for the reload looking like the not doing anything in the reload your character is actually tapping the mechanism to shoot out the spent shells of the bullets
I realĺy appreciate the giant smoke cloud after firing the blackpowder muzzle loader in this game. It dissipates too quickly, and there isn't the 8 foot flame leaping out the barrel, but I can't think of another game that properly depicts shooting a blackpowder gun. First deer I ever got with a gun was a muzzle loader. I was worried cus I couldn't tell which way it ran with the giant smoke cloud. Once it cleared I could see it didn't run at all. Probably had a heart attack. Imagine going into your kitchen to get a snack and a giant flame jumps out of the houseplant 😂.
Not *strictly* true about the heavy weapon handling being the same in power armour. There's a perk you can take that means heavy guns in power armour gain increased accuracy, as though you were able to hold it more steady!
Is this the one and only Jonathan Ferguson, the keeper of Firearms and Artillery at the royal Armories Museum in the UK, which houses a collection of thousands of iconic weapons from throughout history?
Actually on the subject of using big guns in power armor, you can get a perk card that makes them handle a lot better in terms of recoil and stuff while in power armor but not out of it
10:55 Correction. There is a perk in the game called Stabilized under the Intelligence S.P.E.C.I.A.L. that increases the accuracy and armor ignoring capabilities of heavy weapons while in power armor. Yeah, it's tied to a perk, but is an obvious choice for a power armor heavy gunner build.
