Peaky Blinders is an epic gangster drama set in the lawless streets of post-war Birmingham.
In this episode, Tommy waits by the water at Charlie’s Yard to meet a dangerous adversary. Despite their past grievances, the pair agree to a truce. Later, in a private room at the Garrison pub, as Tommy meets with his constituents to hear their grievances, a mysterious stranger with a message arrives. At his Westminster office, Tommy makes Aberama an offer he can’t refuse before inviting Mosley to a party he is throwing for Lizzie’s birthday. On the night of the party, things soon take a turn for the worse when a surprise guest arrives.

  • ok I might completely overanalyze this or interpret way too much in this but there was something very profound about this scene. First of all the suspense that gets created is unreal and had me thinking there finna be 3 dead babyheads on the table so when there were only birds I also, like most of you, felt relief. As Arthur did as well. But something got me hooked about the reaction of Tommy something made me appreciate him more. I think what it is is the utter empathy Tommy has with this woman, that he completely understands that something quite as trivial as 3 pet birds dying is something to take serious. It broke that woman to the point where she felt the need to tell it to the most feared and respected family in the whole city. That got confirmed by her saying "I don't care if my husband beats me", implying that the life of the birds were more precious to her than her own well being. Tommys understanding in my opinion is what makes him the leader and the legitimate Boss of the family. Behind the cold-blooded and reckless facade of him is a man that has a deep understanding of human behaviour and empathy for his peers and people under his wing. That although he is ruthless and quite psychopathic from time to time he is a man that takes care of his people and a man with deep loyalty and values.

  • Such good writing. I like the scene for a few reasons. The humor of course, the acting, the text and the subtext. The woman isn't there just because of the birds... the birds are the evidence of the level of abuse she is enduring at home. (By a husband who may be a war veteran with PTSD like Tommy) If he killed these birds, he may kill me. She knows who the Shelby's are. She's come for their protection. Tommy responds perfectly.

    @lightuponlight6727@lightuponlight67272 жыл бұрын
    • That is so true. Although, not all PTSD means one's loved one will kill them. It comes out in all manner of ways towards different people and situations. But you have a point. Aggression because of PTSD post combat in those days as today, can be towards your own family.

  • This scene is a lot deeper than first seems. It appears funny but, to the woman trapped in a soulless existence that was the only bit of joy in her miserable life. And that was women's life then. You married and that was it. No way out until one of you died. Tommy understands this. And that is why, the people look up to him. Not totally through fear but because when you need him, he has your back. That breeds loyalty. It also shows how deep the character of Tommy is. He understood what it was to lose something, no matter how meaningless to others.

  • This scene is one of many signs that Season 5 took a giant leap from Seasons 2-4. Beyond the ruthless and calculating gangster, Tommy shows a new, caring side. Yes, being an MP is a business and power strategy, but he clearly takes his job seriously and is taking the time to listen to the concerns of his constituents. I did not see this character development coming in Seasons 2-4.

  • For me, this scene is integral in further highlighting the differences between Tommy and Arthur. Arthur finds the situation humorous, but Tommy, now an elected representative of the people, understands the importance of empathising with the people within his constituency. He's playing Chess, while everyone else is playing Checkers.
