Antique Waffle Maker Restoration - My Girlfriend Makes Waffles for You!

In this video, I will restore an antique waffle maker forgotten by people and time. The waffle maker was extraordinarily rusty and quite challenging to restore. It is over 100 years old, and many layers of rust have found their place on it. It was produced in Germany and had something written on it before. Now, only Butter and Nr 2 remained visible. I love this object, and when I saw it for the first time, I knew it would make a great restoration video and deserve to be restored and preserved. After cleaning and seasoning the cast iron with canola oil, I'm satisfied with how it turned out. The restoration process went well, and I had the chance to experiment with new things, especially the waffles my girlfriend made. They were delicious! Trust me! Do you like waffles?
It was like a trip back in time using this old waffle maker.

  • Hi folks! This was a pretty tough restoration project, but I'm happy with the outcome. This waffle maker is full of history and it was fun to see how people used to make waffles back in time. The old german waffle recipe that was written on a side - 1 kilo mehl, 6-8 eier, 1 1/2 liter milch, 375 gramm butter, 1 loffel hefe OR en english - 1 kilo flour, 6-8 eggs, 1 1/2 litres milk, 375 grams butter, 1 tablespoon yeast. • Awesome restoration! As a senior who was raised with cast iron utensils as the main cooking items, it’s better to season by using lard -or if you can’t find that, render your own from baking unseasoned pork. Canola will gum up eventually and be challenging to clean off, detracting from your most excellent work. Also, I use my waffle iron to make hash browns-so crispy and yummy!😁 Great job, new sub.

  • We take waffles seriously in our house kzhead.infoUgkxUfphIgghPSpAXNq6OG2WRYsFVqylcqMn and worked our old one through many years of Sunday brunches till it finally gave out on us. Our old one only made two at a time, this one makes four! Nicely sized 1 inch thick which are lovely! Now the kids don't have to wait as long to eat our weekly waffle breakfast and everyone's are hot if we wait and eat all together! Setting 3 seems to work perfect for golden brown. Be sure to pour the batter in the center of each waffle square, not the center of the iron like the novice that posted the scorched waffles photo. About a 1/4 to 1/3 cup of batter in each seemed to work well for us. We tested making just one at a time so we could use all the remaining batter and it made it just as fluffy and golden as when we made 4!

  • I remember thoroughly cleaning the cast iron frying pan we took on camping trips, when I was fifteen. When I was done, it looked like the inside of this waffle iron, after you went after it with a brass brush. I couldn’t understand why my mother was so angry.

    • Almost nothing is new under the sun unless it uses crazy futuristic sounding tech. Even electric cars were invented before gas cars. Elon musks self landing rocket? They did that in like the 70s or 80s. Hyper loop? That idea is from before airplanes. The world has gotten pretty good at taking credit for things.

    • Yeast Waffles 1/2 c. warm water (about 100-110F) 1 tsp. sugar 1 package of dry yeast 2 c. warm milk 1 stick unsalted butter, melted 1/4 tsp. salt 2 c. unsifted all-purpose flour (10 ounces) 2 large eggs 1/4 tsp. baking soda The night before: In a large mixing bowl (at least 3-quarts in capacity), combine the warm water, sugar, and yeast. Stir & let stand 10 to 20 minutes to proof. If the yeast is active, it will produce many bubbles. Add the milk, butter, salt, and flour and beat until smooth and blended. (I use a whisk.) Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and let stand overnight at room temperature. The batter will rise from 4 cups to 12 cups and then collapse. Morning: Preheat the waffle iron until it is hot enough to sizzle a drop of water. (For crispy waffles, be sure to preheat both sides until very hot before adding the batter.) Be sure to spray with oil, or use a brush to wipe oil on it, each time, before pouring the batter onto the iron. Beat in the eggs. Add the baking soda and stir until well mixed. The batter will be very thin. Pour the batter onto center of the waffle iron, using a light hand because the batter will spread when the lid is lowered. Keep the waffles warm and crisp by placing them in a single layer on racks in a warm oven with the door slightly ajar to allow any moisture to escape. (This is the cookbook suggestion - I serve them to hungry guests as soon as they come off the waffle iron!) If you can find it, serve with Grade B (not A) maple syrup - it has a stronger flavor. Trader Joe’s carries grade B.

  • btw, here are two tips for preventing waffles from sticking. 1. add a couple of teaspoons of oil to the batter. 2. this is more important -- there's a chinese saying, "hot pan, cold oil, foods wont stick". (it rhymes in chinese.) heat the waffle iron, and when it's hot enough, spray it with oil, then pour in the batter. the second tip actually works for any pan - heat it thoroughly, then add oil and swirl it around, then add the foods to fry/saute/etc... they wont stick, and after several uses, the pan will become a non-stick pan.

If you know some one that can cast (or if you can do it yourself) cast an iron one! It’ll season in no time, and be a perfect match

  • For the rust removal electrolysis to work, you need a sacrificial piece of steel or iron to “absorb” the rust given out by the piece you are trying to clean. And it also speeds up the process if you add salt or baking soda to the water to make it a better at conducting the electricity. Other than that, it was an awesome job! And thanks for sharing. :)

  • Beautiful restoration! I'm so glad you got that dirt and the rest off the bottom one, as I could see nothing until after you'd gotten all that off. I was so curious. I thought I made out the word, "butter" and I thought, "I'll bet that's the recipe." COOL! And it was. I'm glad you included that. I also was thinking , "I'll bet that makes some really delicious waffles." And you said later that it did. Your girlfriend made you some. How wonderful. You might just be keeping this wonderful old piece just for you to have when you want melt in you mouth waffles. THANK YOU for sharing your talent and vision with us. 🤓

    @jsschvz0@jsschvz0 Жыл бұрын
    • I love the process too, but takes time especially when the object is extremely rusty. You have around 2-3 min of sandblasting till the air is gone and then you have to wait till the compressor cools down to avoid burning the motor and then refill it with air and so on. This waffle maker will take 2 days at least to be cleaned with sandblasting only. 😅

  • It's beautiful! People have lost interest in Iron appliances because they don't know how to season them, clean them & keep them from rusting. It's too bad, really. Much more healthy cookware than aluminum & Teflon. Of course the sheer weight of iron is something to contend with too, but to have at least some of these great pieces of cookery around is a great idea. And talk about a hearty recipe!! 🌸🧇🧇🩷
