  • To explain why Thorpe could glide effortlessly above the water , we need to have a look at his special training in the mini pool that was unique at that time . He was the first in the world to implement that kind of training . It was all about measuring the water flow around the body . Add to this his slim body , his height ,and his legs . He had a very unique leg movement in the free-style that slides the water from the dead zone which is at the end of the back towards the end of the body generating the perfect wave that helps a lot to keep the whole body gliding with no water resistance at all . This is the key for his free-style success (A very unique leg movement) . Adding to this that he had the longest arm stroke in history . All of that made him the unbeatable killer shark in water . In my opinion he's the swimming icon af all times .

He probably lost that fire after seeing someone as young as Phelps break his records. Had a friend in the Air Force who was a really fast long distance runner, though I was slower I could run for much longer. One day at a 5k race he got beat for the first time on our Air Force base and he never ran one of those races again. He couldn't take it being in second place. • @@RatelHBadger and @jimmy-vy8hy This one wasn't buoyant - it wasn't until 2008 that nett-buoyancy was allowed and that was what made the massive differences. They only lasted until after the world championships of 2009 - so only really one year of "cheat" suits and certainly not here. In reality, Thorpe's suit was no more beneficial than the long-legged versions of everyone else, but it's a shame really, because without understanding this nuance (buoyant vs non-buoyant) the focus is on the wrong thing (the suit, not the amazing swimming) and unfairly detracts from the perception of the performance

      @fattttb0y@fattttb0y8 ай бұрын
    • The suit actually slowed him though a nett wieght gain and restrictive in movement, every stroke against the fabric took a little more effort and also shortened his stroke,, not to mention trapped body heat,,,,, he should of shaved down and won by more , but sadly it was vanity that was the factor at play here! Imagine how fast he could have gone had he not retired before his peak.

  • Great to see the three legends race against each other, Popov is the only swimmer that could stand next to these three. Definitely the race of the century, it's so rare to get three all time greatest athletes actually race against each other. Can't think of another time that has happened in sport. Pity Thorpe retired at such a young age (we all know why), it would have been amazing to see the rivalry go on for another couple of Olympic games, especially against Phelps. Would Phelps have finally got one back on Thorpe in a freestyle race? That's the unknown question.
