Shows how much of a legend van den hoogenband is, only one to retain the 100 free title
Do you know Alexander The Great Popov ? The Russian rocket swept 50m and 100m at 2 consecutive Olympics, 1992 and 1996. He was the only one who could do that.

Hoogenband was the guy who denied Alexander Popov attempt to win gold in 100m for 3rd time.

Chalmers kick has to be one of the strongest out there, the splash is just always so big, especially in the closing 50m when he starts chasing everyone down
I have just realized that Sando Condorelli was actually excellent. At Rio 2016, we can see he was leading until 85-90m, but was surpassed by Chalmers in the last 5m, then by Pieter Timmers and Nathan Adrian in the last stroke. At Tokyo this month, he will only take part in 4x100m free relay for Italy. That relay will be exciting to watch too.

Cameron McEvoy of Australia was actually the main favorite at Rio, as he set 47.04 at Trials, becoming the fastest from textile suit era, before Caeleb Dressel surpassed it at WC 2019. But he was really disappointing in the final.
Those Games were the beginning of the end for McEvoy. He had been unbeatable before that, but must have got his taper wrong. He never managed to get anywhere near the times again that he was swimming before Rio.
@@gustaaf1892 I wouldn't say unbeatable since Ning Zetao beat him in world champs 2015 where Mcevoy was also the favorite to win
Maky also choked in 2015. He always swims amazing at the beginning of the season and at trials but comes up short at actual meets

The best Australians haven't had much luck. Sullivan goes WR in the semis in 2008 then loses out to Bernard, 2012 Magnussen gets beat by 0.01 by Adrian, although Chalmers got it done in 2016 as you said McEvoy messed up. Also bronze in 2004 with Thorpe (who I never actually realised did that well at 100 free)
It's so brutal seeing Magnussen miss out by 0.01s in 2012, then in 2016 McEvoy's best time was 0.5s faster than the winner Chalmers but he didn't produce in the final. So brutal to see how small the differences are, on top of being in top physical and mental state, probably need some luck too
Same goes for Sullivan in 2008 when he swam his fastest time in the semi final only to miss out by a small fraction in the final.
The 1st 0.01 upset I have ever watched live on TV is in men's 100m butterfly at Seoul 1988, when the favorite Matt Biondi was beaten in the last stroke by Anthony Nesty of SURINAME. He looked angry after that, probably to himself for the defeat.
@@lexsoft3969 I remember that well. It seemed to light a fire under Biondi after that loss. Biondi was the ordained and overwhelming favorite. Nesty was nowhere on his radar, from a tiny nation and had never done anything on the international stage. Perhaps it helped Biondi buckle down.
@@bry8636 Back then I didn't know who Nesty was, because internet didn't exist. But after finding from internet that he won gold at Pan American Games 1987, Biondi should have kept an eye on him. Some people said that Biondi made a mistake in his finishing : he decided to simply glide, instead of doing another stroke, or at least, glide with power dolphin kick. That can be seen on the video of the race. But Nesty proved his victory was not a fluke, as he won gold at WC 1991.
@@lexsoft3969 Well, the top swimmers were going to pan pacs while the next best US swimmers went to Pan Ams. Pan Pacs was where the best and deepest comp was. And while Nesty wasn’t slow at the Pan Am games, he was almost a full second off his Olympic time. I was a freshman at Bolles while Nesty was a Sr there, then again at UF. We were all rooting for Ti, but he came from relative obscurity. When he set the National high school record for the 100 fly we were all stunned-and his trajectory went up from there. His was a quick rise and Biondi didn’t see Nesty as his main competition as there were other swimmers who were swimming faster. I agree completely that his olympic swim wasn’t a fluke. He won the Pan Pac games in 89 (not sure how Nesty entered the Pacific games), the Goodwill Games in 90, and then a bronze again in 92. So Nesty was certainly not a fluke
4:00-4:04 Alain Bernard looked relaxed; he seemed to have forgotten his loss in 4x100m free relay previously, and ready to put pressure on Eamon Sullivan.
Bernard looked like he was getting ready for a shot at the Mr Olympia title.
Alain Bernard broke the WR in the first semi final and Sullivan broke it again in the second semi final. Everyone knew it would be between these two.

@@user-ey8cj3xt2c No, men's 4x100 freestyle relay final took place in Aug 11, whereas men's 100 freestyle final in Aug 14, in that 2008 Olympic.
7:36 you can clearly see Magnussen pulling away from Nathan Adrian, and then in those last 10-15m Nathan Adrian regains the lead.
After having 2 gold favorites losing in the final (Sullivan and Magnussen), Chalmers made the change, passing light and coming back strong. Australia cannot swim in lane 4 in the final, wow.
Sullivan lead off in the 4x100 was amazing though...overshadowed by Jason Lezak pulling out a win. But look how far ahead AUS was after the 1st leg

Today, in semifinal he clocked 47.80. There are 5 sprinters faster than him in the semis. We will see tomorrow. I predict he will fail to get to the podium with that result. Hwang Sunwoo of Korea is ready to upset him too after clocking 47.56 today.

I forget that Dressel actually was in for the 100 in 2016. Only forget because it was his first that he made and his first final that he made. He’s coming for gold in all these events this time.
You can also say the same about Chalmers who was 18 in Rio - and he won the race!

Australia should have dominated in recent times. Both Sullivan in 2008 and Magnussen in 2012 swam their best races in the semi final only to get beaten by an eyelash in the final before Chalmers finally brought home the gold in 2016. Those losses destroyed Sullivan and Magnussen mentally and they were only a shadow of their former selves after that.
Yeah... but what a rapid regeneration : Sullivan-Magnussen-McEvoy-Chalmers. Who is next ? Currently I don't find potential candidates from Australia. We will see within the next 4 years.

@@simonpaterson9720 and Lezak went 46.04 in the relay. Relay times are always better because you can time your start. You can start 0.4-0.7s faster.

Popov was better : 50m and 100m in two consecutive Olympics, 1992 and 1996. Nobody had ever done that, except him. I don't think even Caeleb Dressel could do so. But I agree, both are legends.

People say popovici or dressel but they greatly forget about kliment Koleshnikov... all i know is that there will be a lot of low 47’s this year... most anticipated 100 freestyle race ever in my opinion
Top 5 : Dressel, Kyle Chalmers, Popovici, Kolesnikov and Alessandro Miressi. The water won't be clean for Popovici to race in the way he wants like in Junior WC : pressure...pressure from elite sprinters.

To all those doubting Popovici can perform at the Olympics - he swam at Euros this year (I'm not talking about Euro Juniprs which came later and where he set his outlandish PB) against much of the top competition he'll face in Tokyo, and set a PB. There won't be any pressure of being the favorite (he's not) and the atmosphere in the natatorium will be different than in the past due to no spectators being present. I think he's going to be a threat. The way he swims is very similar to Chalmers in 2016, a fast second 50 riding on the waves of your competitors works. It's how Chalmers won gold and set his PB against Dressel though he wasn't able to overtake him. Don't count him out just yet.
Better luck next time. I'm looking forward to seeing more from him this year.

All winners except Hoogenband in Sydney are placed in lane 5!

In swimming the top time in the semifinal gets lane 4 in the final, and the second best time gets lane 5, then lane 3, then 6, and so on until you reach the outer lanes. Middle lanes are better for a couple of reasons but mainly because you can see your main competition on both sides. The outer lanes aren't so great because you can't really see across the pool and you sometimes have to deal with waves bouncing off the wall. But usually in big competition the pools are better and that problem doesn't exist.

I think Chalmers will have to make up too much ground over the 2nd 50 to be able to win. I think the winning time will be under 47.15 and I just can't see him do that.

Chalmers went around 46.45 today and i asked my son. Who is the favourite Chalmers or Caeleb Dressel, and my son looked it up and said Dressel is paying 1.12 and Chalmers is paying around $4.00. I said Quickly put $200 on Chalmers for the 100 meters as Dressel swum the relay at 47. something. Might be different at the race but Chalmers is a weapon and looking great, and he has that relaxed attitude. Can't wait for the mens 100 meters. Oh and just as i said for my son to throw on $200 the betting markets closed and Chalmers had the shorter odds.

Eamon Sullivan was not the single favorite, since Alain Bernard was actually number 1 seed going into the Olympic as the WR holder. But then both broke WR a couple of times at the Olympic. It was a tight competition between the two that I was not sure then who would win. Whereas at 2012, James Magnussen was the main favorite, but was upset by Nathan Adrian.

Actually three consecutive Games, because McEvoy was the strong favourite going into Rio. Chalmers was the surprise winner to make up for it.

I wish there were more black swimmers in the olympic games. 2021 and we still don't see equality in this sport.
Whilst I agree the lack of black swimmers in the sport is disappointing it's nothing to do with discrimination at the Olympic level it's down to how expensive it is to become a high level swimmer and also the lack of facilities in neighbourhoods primarily inhabited by POC's
They have to be fast enough to qualify
it's nothing about skin color or equality, it's all about talent & skills. We could say the same about sprint's events in athletics.
