If you wanted a luxury car without the luxury price tag, you’d probably consider buying a used car... But how about a used car that’s 20 years old!?
Well, Mat’s got his hands on an old Mercedes S-Class, BMW 7 Series and Lexus LS all from the early 2000s to see if opting for a classic limo is worth it. But to find out, he’s going to put them through a series of tests to find out which is the ultimate old luxury limo! Not only will he review and launch them, but he’ll also take them off-road, run their engines without oil, and swab test them all to find out just how disgusting their interiors are!
So before we get into the video, which models do we have our hands on? First up is the Mercedes S320. Back in 2001, it would have cost £51,000 but we bought it today for just £1,800. It’s got a 3.2-litre straight-six turbodiesel engine that produces 197hp & 470Nm.
Then there’s the Lexus LS430. It would’ve cost £54,000 when new, but we got it for £2,000. The Lexus packs more power than the S-Class, coming with a 4.3-litre V8 petrol engine that delivers 281hp & 417Nm.
Finally, we’ve got the BMW 735i. In 2002 this would’ve set you back £53,000, but today it cost us just £1,400. This 735i has a 3.6-litre V8 petrol engine putting down 272hp & 360Nm.

The Lexus did all the tests spewing coolant and overheating so the last engine test wasn't necessarily representative.

@@abdimalikzardheye6623 I will also note that the Lexus servicing schedule includes a new radiator and water pump at 10 years, and presumably at 20 years. The only way to truly compare such cars is to know if they've all been maintained according to the schedule, or all have been run on a shoestring for the last 10 years or so. It also wasn't a fair test because the Merc was a diesel.
The luxery and tech in the Lexus is really impressive if you ask me! I don't have this stuff in my way more recent Tesla M3 and A4 Avant!
I would definitely take Lexus as my daily car , even in till this day people over here in middle east maintain this Lexus very well because of which they look like brand new and runs perfectly and also realibilty of Toyota and Lexus no doubt Lexus is a good car

Pointless to destroy the vehicles and create waste on purpose just for entertainment. If one has so much money that it doesn't mean anything, do some tests without destroying the vehicle, make the video and give the cars to people that can use them.

I'm not a Lexus fanboy, but if all had been maintained according to schedule, I'd choose the Lexus. I wouldn't choose any if they've been run on a shoestring, because they can all be ruinously expensive to maintain properly, particularly if they need a suspension refresh. The LS 430 is not without its problems, but would be my choice out of the three to keep going if the maintenance has been kept on top of...and it can be afforded to keep on top of it. Of course, there are other large luxury cars of similar vintage that are cheap to buy. One of them is the X350 Jaguar XJ, which is also a heavy car with air suspension, but IMO, if you wanted to try to run an old luxury car on a shoestring, your best bet would be the Jag. The Jag's classic styling is also a reason to own one, other than the price, whereas I don't think many people would choose the W220 S Class, E65 7 Series, or LS 430 for their styling. However, IMO the LS 430 is the only choice if one wants to champion the engineering and try to keep such as car going long-term. It's not inexpensive to maintain, and there are various problems, but the engine has proven durability and longevity. And a 430 is a very well-built car made of generally good quality components and materials. All of these cars have electronic components that can make them ruinously expensive to maintain and/or are challenging to source. I think the LS 430 belongs to the latter category. Whereas I think something like a W12 VW Phaeton definitely belongs to the former category, as well as being particularly difficult and therefore particularly expensive to work on. It's also worth bearing in mind that all of this generation of cars include some plastic mechanical/engine components, which isn't good going forward. The E65 7 Series has a particularly bad reputation in this regard, as well as for problematic electronics, and the interior is also full of tech ready to fail at any time. I don't think the W220 S Class is as bad as you may expect, but they are from the worst period in Mercedes history in terms of build quality. My choice of an early-mid 2000s large luxury car would probably be limited to either the LS 430 or an X350 Jaguar XJ. But I'd steer well clear of the cheapest examples.
I'm not complaining or anything but why has Carwow uploaded an episode which is actually just 4 older episodes merged into a long video/episode? Were there no reviews, drag races, off-road challenges or comparisons ready for uploading this week or.....?🤷♂️ Either way, it's always good to see Mat thoroughly "testing" cars🙈😂 Carwow and Mat definitely always deliver when it comes to content though, I must say. I just sold my 745i in Australia. Beautiful car, but every time I drove it I was worried something might break and break me. Champaign taste on a beer budget. Also in Australia, the rego for 12 months was $1200 compared to 450 for a 4-cylinder.

The body doesn't rust as much as the Merc or the BMW. I have a LS430 best car I've ever owned, never had any problems with it. Even when I drove 100k a year.

Surprisingly, this is also another one that i liked a lot.
Drove my first new M5 from era. Belonged to a friend, I was rather impressed when comparing it to my new special ordered Lexus IS300. While the IS300 had beautiful design elements such as the Rolex like instrument cluster, a great shifter, good handling and felt rather lightweight. My friends M5 felt like a tank, in a good way, very solid feeling doors, impressive interior in it's own right, beautiful exterior, the massive separator was the power and performance. That M5 V10 made the 2JZ 6cyl IS300 feel as slow as a Civic, lol

The LFA regardless of straight line speed or track capabilities has the most perfect sounding V10 ever made, possibly the best ICE engine sound ever for a production car. The LFA was also a $375k - $450k priced car compared to a 2010 BMW M5 @ $85k - 95k. The two cars don't compare on any level. A used LFA today goes for around 1 million dollars US.

Although this is an old video, it does show that, considering the Lexus completed all the off road tests on more or less the same course you use for the SUV’s… in future, you really need to make the SUV off road tests, a bit more “testing and difficult” for the actual “off road” type cars.. 😂

Thr 308 in thst colour is a very nice car indeed. Ive seen a few on thd motorway latley, and its pribaly going to be my next car in August. I also liem thr 208 in mustard yellow, but i think thst will be to small for me. I think pug is nailing design atm.
