Showjumping Lesson! Roger Bolted...?!! | GoPro

What an absolute muppet this pony is. But I do love him. I was expecting him to be a little bit sticky in the grass jumping paddock as he’s been a bit spooky & silly in general recently, so I wasn’t particularly surprised when he ran out at the very first teeny tiny cross pole… He had been spooking at some abandoned red jump wings left in the grass just outside the field, which of course was the perfect excuse to run out of the jump we were actually jumping 🙄 Once he’d stopped being so silly, we started building up to a short course, and after the first 2 or 3 jumps, he started feeling much more confident (basically I think he realised that it was much nicer to just jump the jumps and enjoy himself, rather than being naughty and getting told off at every single fence).
Once we’d popped over everything once, he felt fantastic and gave me a super confident feeling into each jump, with a lovely adjustable canter (which we were definitely missing at the start of the ride!). Our final mini round felt great, Roger was listening and responding to everything I was asking of him (including taking a bit of a silly flyer at the last - couldn’t resist!) and we finished the lesson on a really good note. I popped in some GoPro footage from Robin's camera showing some of our jumps, as I know a lot of you like seeing raws, even if I don't always like posting them! Sorry for the worse quality of those zoomed-in clips!
Just as we were about to leave, the Red Arrows (Royal Air Force aerobatic display team) flew over the field in two groups, but the two ponies were absolute saints and didn’t move a muscle. They do fly over the yard fairly frequently, but it’s still always a bit of a shock! Unfortunately, that is where my praise for Roger ends, as despite the beautiful ride he gave me round the show jumps, and his calmness when the planes went over, he was an absolute muppet on the way back in and decided to spice things up a bit with a silly little bolt and some (frankly terrible) dance moves. There was absolutely no reason for him to be so naughty after being so well behaved during the rest of our ride, but I guess that’s Roger for you! You’ll have to excuse the fact I pull him quite hard when he takes off - he is deceptively strong and at the end of the grass theres a sharp 90 degree turn downhill onto the concrete drive, which I was absolutely not going to let him bolt through. He was lead in after that to stop him from bombing off again and bounced all the way back to the yard, looking very pleased with himself... Someone needs to remind him he’s a 17yr old riding school pony!! 😂

⬇️ FAQs ⬇️
🔵 DO YOU OWN THE HORSES & PONIES IN YOUR VIDEOS?
No, all the horses & ponies belong to a lovely riding school, or are working liveries at the same yard.
🔵 WILL YOU EVER GET YOUR OWN HORSE?
I would love to own a pony one day, but for now I am more than happy having weekly lessons on the fantastic riding school horses & ponies.
🔵 WHY DO YOU ALWAYS JUMP THE SAME HEIGHT?
These riding school ponies usually jump more than once a week, and sometimes more than once a day, so we don’t jump ‘big’ except on special occasions to ensure the ponies stay sound and live long, happy lives. Fence height has very little to do with jumping technique or experience.
🔵 HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN RIDING FOR?
I’ve been having weekly lessons in riding schools for 16 years now!
🔵 IF YOU’VE BEEN RIDING FOR SO LONG, WHY DON’T YOU COMPETE?
I have no personal interest in competing or jumping huge tracks. I ride for fun, simple as that!
🔵 WHY ARE THE HORSES ALREADY TACKED UP WHEN YOU APPROACH THEM?
This is a busy riding school & livery yard and so the lesson horses are tacked up by the staff who work there to ensure they are ready to leave the yard on time and have been tacked up correctly.
🔵 DO THE HORSES STAY TACKED UP 24/7?
No. The horses are only tacked up right before their lessons and spend the rest of their time turned out in grass fields.
🔵 WHO IS ROBIN FROM YOUR VIDEOS?
Robin is my mum and she rides with me in my lesson every week. She's 65 and fearless as ever!

  • So often people tell me that Roger looks like he’s going really fast when I jump him (which I don’t mind at all!), but in the saddle it just feels like a lovely, powerful, confident canter and not rushy at all! 🐎 Roger can certainly rush when he wants to, especially on the cross country course, but in these videos in the school and especially the field (where there’s more space to open him up a bit in between fences), you’re just seeing a 14hh pocket rocket really enjoying himself! It’s a lengthened but very controllable & adjustable canter and it’s exactly how I like it for showjumping 😁 x

  • QOTD: she’s always feeling fresh! But she has had 5 years off so I can’t blame her for now 😉 there’s a training grounds for the Air Force near my yard too and the planes fly over quite often so luckily Neen isn’t to bothered by them, she’s more scared of parcel force than she is of the Air Force 😂😂 they are quite annoying tho, I know they can’t see the horses from all the way up in the air but it’s a bit inconsiderate of them being so loud 😣😂

    @miah7@miah72 жыл бұрын
  • Joey does that too! He’s nice and calm walking to the arena, does fairly well in the lessons (he gets close to the jumps and basically gallops to them) and then gets tired at the end so he won’t move and then bam he’s full of beans going back the the stalls! I’m seriously joey?!😂 joey isn’t mine btw he belongs to the riding school I work at/used to ride at 😁 he’s actually the pony in my profile picture!

    • I don’t tend to wear them any more on this pony (apart from hacking & Xc when he can get a little bit strong), but I do wear them on horses with thinner reins, or for horses like Magic for jumping (as he can get a bit heavy/strong in the rein) which rubs my hands.

      @PonyCam@PonyCam2 жыл бұрын
    • Haha I never wear gloves when I ride (unless it’s cold of course) but most others in my group do. I do get blisters sometimes on very strong horses and uncomfortable reins but they heal in a week until the next lesson😂truth be told I probably have very thick skin on my ring fingers now

    @lexi8893@lexi88932 жыл бұрын

      @PonyCam@PonyCam2 жыл бұрын
  • Was Roger really fresh for your lesson because he was really motoring during it, faster than your previous videos riding him? Or has the feed been changed etc? He likes to spook but even his spook in the lesson was a big one. Very on his toes but well done for staying calm and regaining control when he bolted, that is never nice.

    @Mosheltie@Mosheltie2 жыл бұрын
    • Nope nothing has changed and he was normal during the lesson, lazy even, until half way through - it only looks faster because we’ve got more space so I’m letting him open up his canter a bit more, which makes it look more speedy than it is. It was just right at the end when we were heading for the gate that he got a bit silly, but he’s done things like this his whole life, which is why he was given to riding school in the first place 7 years ago! It’s very much just Roger being Roger 😊

    @Equestrian-ce2xo@Equestrian-ce2xo2 жыл бұрын
    • Roger is only ridden by people who can handle him. You’re right in that he is not suitable to be ridden by everyone, but the riding school simply do not put those people on him. This pony been at the riding school for 7 years now with no serious problems and the riding school are extremely careful with regards to what ability of rider is suitable to ride each individual horse. They use a multilayered system when designating horses to riders, including a rider & horse grading system (ability levels 1-4), which ensures only riders of level 3 and above (and who have also individually been deemed capable enough by the staff at the riding school) can ride this pony. The same goes for all of the other riding school horses & ponies at this yard.

      @PonyCam@PonyCam2 жыл бұрын
    • Roger is 100% suitable for the riding school and everybody who rides him. He is regularly ridden by children and teenagers, and when he has a novice on him he knows to be on his best behaviour. Even the laziest riding school plod along pony would have a bit of a spook at planes flying very low overhead!!
