  • I met him once in a comedy club in new york during his time away from the spotlight. He didnt really perform comedy, was just speaking with us mostly, making fun of us, talking about society, etc. He stayed until 3 am or so. It was very unique. I think he wanted to feel like a person, and we did manage to do that for him that day.

      @JillianFischer1@JillianFischer13 ай бұрын
    • @user-es7fc7ee6d not so sure about that. Sure, you can't make alot of money easily or quick, but you can make money anywhere in the world if you buckle down and work hard. But that depends on what you do. But I believe you can leave quite easily. If you're really desperate, live on next to nothing for a few months (spaghetti with mince meat, minute steak, chicken fillets, etc. Meat is cheap here. If you can do that, get two minute noodles, etc. Don't use a aircon, save the money, etc. Get a cheap plane seat that costs like 7k or maybe 12k max and fly to the US and just make sure you get a place to stay ahead of time... or rather go to a country that had cheaper basic necessities, like Prague.) There are plenty of European countries that are cheap to live in. Find one you like. And then just go to it. But here's the thing, that's scary to do. The problem isn't money to get a ticket, it's doing it... Italian Americais moved to the US with a whole family and NO money and made a living. Nigerians too. But that's easy because they had nothing, if you have something in SA, you're afraid to lose it for a while.

He would understand that for his bs with Comedy Central and Hollywood prior, and I think that if he looked at it that way more like he did with one comment he already made, he’d be as real as he was prior to his comeback. Doing real hard mathematics, civic and city planning, logistics, doing ordinary retail jobs, trucking, science and technology, both original creative work like research AND noncreative but still VERY USEFUL work -- THAT is genius. Some comedian does not need to be "genius" or "brilliant" to make funny points. I wish people would stop conflating the two.

Dave Chappelle and Katt Williams both turned that offer down cause they didn't want to subject themselves to public humiliation for money, key word being THEY DIDN'T, it's a different story if someone wants to do it but you can't force someone to do something they don't want to do no matter how much money you dangle in front of em, and people can say all the negative stuff they want about Katt and Dave but they held on to their integrity.

  • I remember when Dave was in the Nutty Professor movie and then later on with the Chapelle Show. Much later in life, just a few years ago, I was able to see him live and it was amazing. I think the sensitivity of todays culture is affecting the majority of the arts. I totally understand some things aren’t “funny” however, the work of comedians is to make things funny so that the vast majority of people can become accustomed to different topics or ideas. While I understand why some try to “cancel” performers, I don’t know if they really understand how beneficial it is to society to let things work themselves out.

  • The reason I love Dave is because he is incredibly middle of the road. He leans more towards being a Democrat but he has no problem opposing and supporting issues and problems on both sides. He’s realistic with his views and most of all, despite him usually going off into a speech sometime in his specials, it never feels like he’s lecturing the audience, it just feels like he’s telling us important stories. Like how many other comedians can seamlessly weave in the story of Emmett Till into a comedy special and make it feel organic. His public speaking is a genuine talent.

    • I think its valuable to show perspectives of older people. Dave isn't a young un anymore and young people are constantly trying to change the social landscape. They don't realize that all the older people are tired. They already fought their battles and got change when they were young. New ideas appear and just like those they fought against in the past, it seems ridiculous to them. Social Media and the Internet has accelerated the rate that these social changes are trying to be made so it becomes more jarring. Instead of slowly coming to terms with an idea over the span of a decade and then slowly changing things over the next decade, people are trying to make these social changes overnight.
