The Poor Traveller by Charles Dickens - Full Audiobook | Christmas Stories
A full unabridged audiobook of the classic short story, "The Poor Traveller", by Charles Dickens - complete with sounds and visuals.
"The Poor Traveller" tells the story of a fictional relative of Dickens himself; a down-on-his-luck young soldier by the name of Richard Doubledick. Doubledick manages, with the help of a trustworthy Captain, to rebuild his faltering life and becomes something of a national treasure in the aftermath of the Napoleonic Wars.
The story originally featured as one part of a collection of stories entitled "The Seven Poor Travellers", which featured contributions from various authors including Wilkie Collins, Eliza Lynn and Dickens himself. It made its first appearance in Household Words magazine in 1854.
Dickens began a tradition of Christmas publications with "A Christmas Carol" in 1843 and his Christmas stories soon became a national institution.

I'm listening to this bedridden at the hospital but I had to stop because I'm not supposed to laugh and Richard Double Dick gets me every time
😆 it’ll literally have you in stitches. Get well soon, Victor!
I wonder if it was chosen on purpose. It can be read as 'Dick Dick-Dick by Dickens' 🤗

Hope your now well on the mend 😂👍
I must confess I had the same reaction. I know the meaning of words change but the effect is hilarious.
Forgiveness doesn't free the wicked from their evil deeds. Rather, it frees the wounded, allowing their lives more peace. Thank you Sir for a lovely narration.
Thank you for the kind words ❤️
I never read Dickens until I retired. I saw several versions of The Christmas Carol and the movie, A Tale of Two Cities. They seemed okay. However, when I read these stories. I was amazed by his craftsmanship and his beautifully conceived stories. He is now one of my favorite authors. This story, so beautifully narrated, added to my favorable impressions of Mr.Dickens. Thank you for this.
That’s great to hear, so glad you enjoyed it!
It may sound corny but for many Christmases I had a tradition of re-reading "A Christmas Carol" every year because each year I seemed to associate with a different character. Dickens is a giant!
This makes me wish I had a friend named Dick, so I could tell him “you’re being a doubledick today!” I love Dickens.
Surely not too hard to find a Richard out there?! 😆
I had never heard of this story before. Thank you for making this recording. What a wonderful illustration of the power of love and forgiveness!
That’s wonderful! I’m so glad you tuned in. This is an excerpt from The Seven Poor Travellers that also featured on its own as a Christmas edition in a magazine of the time. ❤️

The most powerful think in a mans life is to choose peace and being at peace with those who wrong you and trying to do right. As it is said, All wars are holy war's; because we are fighting different things we hold dear. Indeed, forgiveness is divine 🙏
Thank you for listening. Hope this was a peaceful listen for you at this festive time ❤️

A request: You might read "Tattercoats", an English fairy tale collected by Joseph Jacobs in his More English Fairy Tales, or other works in this collection. Thank you again for your fine narrations. A pleasure to listen.
There are a couple of Joseph Jacobs stories on the channel actually! But I’ll certainly have a look out for this collection
Marvellous 🥰

Wonderfully narrated Paul in Canada

😂 I can’t listen to this without laughing. Dickens must have written this when he was in JR High!
Thanks for listening!
Impeccably read. Thank you. Weird. Not sure I understood it at all. Was listening in bed and think I dozed off for a few minutes..
That’s perfectly acceptable! Glad this was able to help you to relax 😊
This fine tale was narrated so well; would love to hear you narrate “The Portrait Painter” by Dickens (2-part short story).
Ooh! An excellent suggestion. I’m sure it will turn up at some point. Thanks Rachel ❤️
@@classicaudiobookswithelliot I’ll keep my ears peeled for it😃- thanks Elliot
@@classicaudiobookswithelliot hi E, the Dean of Canterbury did a live reading of 🎨TPP 3 years ago (if you didn’t already know). Endearing to see!- but I’d still like to hear your version. A tale of such haunting beauty and convoluted wonder. At the point where he gets stranded, it starts to feel like a shaggy-dog story, funny- then one is promptly thrown into unfolding layers of the uncanny. Loved it for 20 years, don’t understand why it’s so overlooked. I look forward to checking out your offerings.📚
I gave it an honest go but my giggling at Richard Doubledick was too distracting 😂 It occurred like 10 times in the first 8 minutes!
Dickens certainly loves to get the name out as much as possible!
Good story
Thanks for listening!
Great book
Thank you!
I love how you read for us. Thanks a lot
You’re very welcome, Maribel!
Dickens choice of names i.e. Mr. Pumblechook!
Another absolute classic 😆
I truly like the thees and thous.
Thanks for listening, Patricia!
@@classicaudiobookswithelliot You're welcome.
Charles Dickens my favourite
Thanks so much for listening!
Thank you, this is another Charles Dickens short story that was hitherto unfamiliar to me. I wonder if anyone with better historical knowledge than mine can enlighten me on the last remark about the sons Doubledick and the French officer fighting side-by-side? Does anyone know which conflict Dickens was referring to? (If he had lived 50 years later, I would have thought he meant WW1!)
Thank you for listening, Katy. It’s a really lovely story, similar to his redemption tales more well known to us, but without the supernatural element. Incidentally I believe the conflict which the sons would have fought in was probably the Crimean War (1853-1856) as allies against Russia.
I too was unfamiliar and appreciate your thoughts and questions. The Battle at Waterloo is such a famous battle.
That was a good one, keep it up.wish to hear stories by O Henry.. please consider
Considering recording “The Gift of the Magi” so keep your eyes peeled!
My two favourite story tellers Dickens and Hans Christian Andersen, sorry I’m laughing my head off as whilst writing this he’s talking about Private Dicky Double Dick in the background 😂…Worth a Subb thank you
Thank you for subbing! Great to have you
isnt it funny...its just what i needed...the gift of forgiveness...love and privacy...the world doesnt need to know...kia ora...all the way from aotearoa(nz)
That’s wonderful to hear, thanks so much. I’m looking to come to NZ in the next few years so it’s great to know the stories are making their way so far!
Churr
Excellent reading. That singular name 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Many thanks, Johanna!
Wow
Thanks for listening, Ellen!
Strange subject for Dickens. Do you know how old he was when he wrote it?. I'm assuming it pre-dates most of his more socially aware stories🤔.
From what I can see he was around 42 when this story appeared. So certainly not a young man!
@@classicaudiobookswithelliot Thank you for replying. I had never heard the story before and I'm a great fan of Dickens... Shame about all the childish comments you've received over the name. I'm not even sure the term had the same implication at the time it was written
hello from Kansas🇺🇸
Thanks for listening, Janice, from across the pond!
What is an Ensign in British Army? Is that the same as an American Lt.?
Yes, I believe it’s an antiquated term for a 2nd lieutenant. One of their roles would have been to carry a standard, also known as an ensign
Wonderful..bravo and encore! Are you the narrator and channel owner? If so? Thank you thank you…. You’ve got a superb reading voice
That’s me! It’s a one-man band this channel. Really appreciate you listening
Nice
Thanks for listening!
Your voice is near asmr 🪕
Thanks Shauna! So glad this great story is getting a lot of love ❤️
Private Richard Double Dick would get flogged....Dickens knew exactly what he was doing lol
😉 thanks for listening Dan!
Do you only do short audiobooks?
Hey Rueben! As of now, I’m mostly focussed on short form audiobooks for KZhead as the time commitment for the long ones is so intense. However, some of the longest titles include my reading of “A Study in Scarlet”, “Tales of King Arthur” and “A Christmas Carol”!
@@classicaudiobookswithelliotWow! Are you the narrator? That is good reading
