A new depreciation king has arrived!
Yep. I wouldn't like to see the prices after say a year or 18 months time. A boulder in a swimming pool style!
This will be a lease only car.
Heck even the G3X 5 series cars go for sub 20k dollar range used, not even the base 530i
They are way too rare to depreciate a lot because now one is buying them rn. Trust me.
With a 250/299 mile range it makes me wonder what the actual range will be on a cold day after the lease period ends.
I've never seen Doug wearing long pants
he usually likes to show off those sexy legs of his
Global warming…
I didn't think he's owned a pair since he moved to SoCal
Some of us are here for those pretty thighs, he knows.
Maybe he's finally getting the fkn hint
This BMW I5's camera system has given us the best tour of the Cars&Bids Headquarters - the only one I think we've ever had!
BMW i7 XDRIVE60 got a little better spec compared to i5 EDRIVE40.
Doug is the type of guy who says that the car doesn't have a sport mode, but when he opens the menu, the same sport mode greets us
If it wasn’t for the logo and kidney grill I probably wouldn’t recognize this car as a bmw at all
Strange fact 🏅
Looks like a Nissan from behind
Well that is true for every car ever isn’t it? Like pick an old e-type and remove the badge, it could honestly be from any luxurious and sporty brand in the 60’s
“If this car didn’t have its two most iconic and defining traits, I wouldn’t recognize it at all”
Looks like a Polestar 2 kinda which is not a good thing.
The G30 was design perfection. So naturally BMW thought, "we have to make it ugly like the rest of our new cars" and thus the G60 was born!
I still think that the F10 was the best looking one
U say that but bmw has skyrocketed in sales since their new gen of cars. The new m3 and m4 g8x models have sold TRIPLE the amount per year then their old f8x models. I actually love this design it looks like a big bulky bmw muscle car. The m5 will look insane. It definitly has presence. If someone wants the more gentleman's m5 they will get the previous gen and if they want this one they'll get that. Better then having the same exact design every single year. Actually a good marketing strategy
@@user-my4xu4gf1z Trashy people gravitate to trashy looking cars, hence the sales increase!
Yawn. It's all I ever read in most car comment sections. People thinking a particular model design or generation is somehow perfection and complain endlessly about the new stuff. I prefer all the new designs. Time moves on. Oh and the people that complain about the screens and increasing tech bore me to death too.
'design perfection'? really? maybe if you'd see no other cars.
The most interesting part about this video is the Lucid Air Dream Edition selling for $87,000. That’s half price from 2 years ago!! I believe Doug needs to adjust the Value in its dougscore making it the new champion!
it needs to be zero, Lucid won't make it out of 2024
@@philipkoekemoer4705or even January 2025.
Not offering AWD on the base model of the electric model is a big mistake. Lots of potential buyers for this car live in areas that get terrible weather and an AWD model that sits between the 40 and the 60 would sell pretty well, especially in NY, Northern CA, MA, Washington State, etc. Almost all of this cars competitors offer AWD without requiring customers to purchase the top performance model too.
I suspect BMW will soon release an AWD i5 xDrive40 as they have with the i4.
That opening startup sound sounds a lot like Macintosh computers when they power up 🤔🤔
Doug is the type of guy to own every Apple product from the mid 90s to now
Well they are looking to make their products be subscription based and with planned obsolescence so it stands to reason bimmer would try and get consumers to identify with it like it's their i5. I mean iPhone.

As someone who came of age in the E39 era, there’s very little about this that feels like a BMW to me. It just seems so far removed from what I have in mind when I think of BMW.
Heavy and hideous. Why bother?
Agree. I found it interesting that Doug was so accepting of this car to not feel like a BMW. What is the point of buying a BMW if it does not feel like it? Then you could rather buy some other random electric sedan or even a crossover. They might sell a few of these, but the appeal of the brand is rapidly descending with each car like this.
100%
E38, E39 and E46 were peak BMW styling, and it has gone sharply downhill from there. The passage of time has not, and will not, change my mind.
Nice way of saying it’s an ugly POS. And I agree.
The BMW I5 is here! Not great, not good, not awesome, not the best, not bad, not awful, but here! Reminds of Christopher Hitchens beginning his lectures with: "Of all the introductions of myself that I heard, this is certainly the most recent!".
certainly not as good as a model s. even the "high performance" i5 m60 is worse at being a performance car than the model s dual motor, with FAR less range, practicality, and reliability to boot, while being more expensive. or you could spend $5k more and get a plaid. this cars only real market seems to be for old people and bmw stans. i really dont see who else this car is for, its only better in 1 way and even that is counteracted by poor longevity and reliability which bmws are famous for, specifically electrical issues... and this car is literally all electrotonics. it doesnt even have design going for it against the model s. just quality interior, which im sure will be worth it when everything starts breaking.
BMW i5 in terms of handling looked quite rough like the Chrysler Crossfire.
@@user-rm7kb3il6x Well I would stay rather drive an BMW than an Tesla. Sorry. I just prefer having an BMW badge.

Probably the best review I've seen in an age, thanks for the insight.
I had a brand new 2024 530i rental from sixt about three weeks ago. At first, I hated it. I accidentally turned on the overhead lights and had to go through 3 screens to turn them off. Once I figured out the basics, I was in love. This thing was great. It snowed in Maryland (where I was) and this xdrive was a blast!! Seriously thinking of trading in the Allroad for it.

Rest in peace to my favorite sedan ever
I mean, the 5 series is basically a thing of the past anyway with everybody switching to SUV's.
Rest in peace BMW as a whole
I agree....I think this whole pure EV thing for the German car makers is a fad...Shocked to see Porsche going that way too-- major dilution of their brand...Once they see their sales sink, they will have to pivot...German government is pulling EV subsidies this year, EV sales are tanking... As an example Audi E-tron sales are 60-70% down this year, the consumer feedback on these is pretty stark....
@@stephans1990 even worse, SUVs are just sedans/hatchbacks but bigger, less efficient, etc...
@@ift7628there's ban on ICE cars since 2035. All manufacturers will move exclusively to EVs. Theres no hope
Harry from Harry’s garage had a very interesting review on this particular car. I am sure Doug enjoyed it, as a big fan of him.
I saw one of these today. It's huge. It has a backup beeper because it's the size of a truck!
Last gen was nice from the get go.
Even BMW Z8 2003 also is nice.
The G30 and the E39 were the best. Not just design but everything else.
It boggles the mind that there's no front trunk in this thing. They've got an engine bay the size of a swimming pool but they can't even find the space to fit the charge cables under there. Just a complete lack of ambition in the packaging department.
Im guessing it’s because most of these cars are built on an ice vehicle frame first and adapted for EV! That’s why range and power isn’t as crazy as teslas because teslas are built from the ground up to be an ev so they could space things correctly most of these are retrofitted from an ice architecture!
The problem is that BMW decided to go the route of a basic chassis for each series that can accommodate either an ICE power train or an electric powertrain. That necessarily means compromising both types of models.
The edrive versions of the i4 have enough space for an aftermarket front trunk (no front motor.) I imagine the same will be true of the edrive i5 models.
the engine bay in bmw’s electric cars are all filled with electrical components
As someone who owns an i3, I find it super amusing. The i3 is 3 feet shorter than this i5 and still has a frunk. Goes to show the importance of designing an EV to actually be an EV.
I drive the bmw i5 M60. I agree with everything you said Doug. I’m 6’7 I have plenty of room, car seat fits easily in there. I came from a ford bronco Wildtrak backseat space was so limited. Also this BMW drives so well on the road takes bumps well and that M60 is a beast speed wise
That carwash camera mode is great. I have the same on my i4, and I do use it every time I go to the car wash.
It's not ugly...it just has an economy car vibe
Eyes.exe has crashed.
This is probably the first BMW that's less attractive than Honda's entire lineup.
Ur opinion will change when u see one blacked out with aftermarket rims
The BMW characteristic Hoffmeister kink is now butchered beyond recognition and the 5-series seem to have lost it’s luxury performance feel and is looking cheap to the point it could be confused with the 3-series. That greenhouse now reminds me of the Corolla sedan. Nothing about this car indicates luxury or sportiness.

Agreed. The echo chamber that is that garage is so bad for audio.
@@djejnyc It would probably get better if he'd invested in white background and some HQ lighting, maybe hexagon one that some detailing studios have. It would make car body lines more visible.
First impression: The i5 has the presence of a Toyota Crown sedan. And, according to Doug’s assessment, you can pay a premium price for a prestige brand and enjoy the same type of competent but unremarkable experience delivered by a mid-level Honda Accord .
This car is so lame
That's a real car though.
I was gonna say the outside of this car feels like a modern accord (if you ignore the front grill) and the interior is beyond quirky. Hey Doug, just a friendly suggestion, but could you think about putting sound-deadening material on the walls to reduce the hall in the sound. That would be a great upgrade for the new filming location. ❤️
I am a software engineer in mid 30s and I find all this tech and screens too much. I like having cruise control, navigation, Spotify and backup camera, but this situation with big screens everywhere, no physical controls and lights everywhere just seems distracting and unnecessary.
Cars are not iPads. They need physical switchgear. Watch as BMW moves back to traditional interiors in the future.

Dont act like Skoda didnt rip off BMWs design to begin with.
Feeling optimistic about BMW EVs. BMW makes good electronics. My 5 series had 200k miles and every button worked, had no rust and rode like a dream. It just had a lot of oil leaks. This car has no oil and less coolant, so it might be reliable. I might buy one of these.
which generation is your 5 series?
Oil leaks sounds like a huge concern. Oil loss can cause engine failure. Did BMW repair the oil leaks within warranty?
Plus BMW have been selling EVs for more than a decade, so it's not their first rodeo
It was a 2007. I fixed all the leaks, but it burned maybe 1 quart per month. It needed all 4 02 sensors (probably due to the burned oil) tires and I hated the stereo so i traded it for an Explorer Sport so my kids would fit. I got like 3k for it cause it was in great cosmetic condition. It was a fantastic car though. I miss it a little bit. Awesome on a windy Pennsylvania backroad.
@@dgw4049 That's very fortunate, glad you had a good experience. The E60 generation is infamous for its electronics

I'm surprised Intel isn't upset with the i5 nomenclature
Didn't think about that. I guess the products are so different they didn't mind.
They need the exposure more then ever
I remember when Ford was against Ferrari naming their F-1 racing card F150.
Ah yes, I always get confused when I go the the BMW dealership looking for a processor and end up leaving with a luxury sedan
Intel just dropped the i branding. Now its called core ultra 5
It gives you a MacBook startup sound when you get in?
Base model ICE is going to be a great buy in 18 months
It's hard to outdo the previous gen G30 in terms of styling. Designs like that just have a timeless, signature look to them that defines a brand and makes it hard to deviate from. Especially the m550i with the more aggressive front bumper. I hope this 8th gen is a stepping stone to something great in the future. Also, those prices. No longer best bang for your buck.
I have a 2018 plug in m sport trim n i still stare at it 6 years later like i always did. Some of the options i have aren’t even available anymore which is depressing
I've already seen the new 5 series in person and this thing is huge. Cars have gotten way too big now.
So have the butts sitting in said cars
You from the uk too? The five series does look massive here now but that’s because they have made a world car rather than one for Europe and what looks huge here is really just an average sized sedan in the USA. I agree that it’s looking too big for our roads though.

Cool you like the car. I have the car for a couple months now and really like it a lot.
Even though the design is imho a step back from the G30, I like the strategy where the ICE and EV’s have the same design. Mercedes should also do this instead of making those hideous EQ-serie cars.
The car looks massive with you sitting behind it.
It's longer than a Toyota Highlander. It's a big boat

It's ironic that Cadillac is now eating BMW and Mercedes-Benz's lunch for sporty luxury cars. It used to be that Mercedes-Benzes and BMWs were known for their subtle design and solid driving experience while Cadillacs were big gaudy things you bought to be seen in. Now, Cadillac is the brand with the driver-focused chassis and restrained styling while M-B and BMW are making ugly, bloated cars. All Cadillac needs to do is improve their interiors to really be world-class.

The interior is definitely impressive. The fact that is longer than the older 7 is also a great change. Eventually 1 out of every 3 homes will have a EV. This will definitely make the value of the classic 5 series (V8,and V10) go up in value.

It's disappointing that with all the advances in battery tech, 240 miles is the best BMW could come up with, especially at that price. I'm no EV fan but there are several similarly priced EV sedans that destroy its range for the same money or less. You did a smart thing by keeping your 540i. 240 miles is a dealbreaker for me too when I can get double that out of my gas car and refuel in five minutes.

One interesting quirk to BMW infotainment is that the basic functions can be controlled by hand gestures - for example do a little circle with your finger in the screen vicinity and it will adjust the volume - I'm quite sure, that there's one for A/C fan speed as well. It's actually quite handy - you don't need to look away from the road or look for any button at all.
I'm sure that will still work amazingly well in 10 years time....

Um...that was lame.
As much as I hate offroad cars, allroad-like cars and such stuff, Sterrato would be 1000x better choice than Countach. It's one of the last V10 Lamborghinis, it's unique for what it is, it's way more fun and reliable. It would be great daily driver. Countach is cool but it's just old italian car that has been produced for over 25 years. It's not even last of a kind so it's not really anything special about it apart from crazy styling which I personally don't get. And it only goes up in value so it's scary driving it in traffic.

Meanwhile, my 2016 VW Golf (ICE) can recha-- I mean refuel in ~3 minutes to the full 100% and my range is about 900km (highway). But I guess he's very comfortable sitting in his BMW where even turning on the airco or heated seats or entertainment or all those interior lights affect your range. My car also has lane assist, adaptive cruise control, has a DynAudio sound system with subwoofer, blind-spot warning, and so many other nifty features. All for the grand total price of (back in 2017 when I bought it 2nd-hand) $20,000. That BMW offers minimal added comfort (on top of forcing 40 to 60 minute recharging breaks very regularly) for an additional $60,000? Imagine that saving $60,000 can get you. Here's what: $40,000 in profit if you put it into an index fund for 5 years. Your expensive luxury car (that also costs a ton in expensive BMW maintenance) is costing you more than just the additional purchase price. And guess what? Most people driving those things are broke. As. F. Posers. If you want to get this car and make it make sense, you should have $1,2 million in liquid savings. And even then you should rethink your choice 15 times over because you can get a far more reliable Honda (also very comfy) for half the money.
