For someone to be a commodity, there needs to be someone else to treat them as such, but he was his own boss on his movies. He did the stunts he did because of low budget and realism, whereas in Hollywood, they fake the stunts because of legal and financial reasons, like production time lost due to potential injuries, insurance, possibility of being sued by the actors, etc. The "West" doesn't value life more, it just costs more to not take precautions, that's all.
