"That's weird how it's all flat, what's that all about?" Well, that line kinda dictated which states would have slaves (south of the line) and which ones would not (north of the line), it was called the Missouri compromise and was a really strange way of trying to come up with a solution to the argument of slavery. Of course it ultimately divided the nation quite literally north and south, leading to the civil war because of the opposing ideologies.
@memeindustry6725 жыл бұрын
That is not why the line is that way. It is because the original colony of Carolana (now NC and SC) spanned all the way to the Mississippi River and that line was the northern border. It was then separated but the line remains the northern border of several states

I’m loving the sporacle quizzes!
fineos Sporacle is a great site.
"it's all flat... what's that all about?" *cough* slavery *cough*
Yeah wrong injustice dude. The crazy line comes from an early version of “let’s take over the whole land” but they wanted the original “states” spreading halfway across the “country”
That is not why the line is that way. It is because the original colony of Carolana (now NC and SC) spanned all the way to the Mississippi River and that line was the northern border. It was then separated but the line remains the northern border of several states
16:19 You've been gnomed.

@@BenHunt10 It's the Missouri Compromise. Not the border of the Confederacy, but an important border nonetheless.
It’s because the colony of Carolana (now NC and SC) one spanned all the way to the Mississippi River with that line the top border. It is even with the northern Texas border
I'm pretty sure it's there bc they made a line and said that anywhere above that line slavery was illegal or something

Suspect pronunciations
Mitchegen
Well he's English so its not like we use US states on a daily basis
Mate, most people as well-versed in geography know how to pronounce these names.
Rick Sanchez - Pretty irrelevant argument, this guy's obviously put the time into learning them. That being said, I'd say the pronunciation doesn't matter, it's correct if that's how you'd pronounce the word in your own country.
Jeez it's just banter lads. His pronunciations were funny, no need to take it so seriously. I for one, could point to a maximum of 3 states on a map, yet I can pronounce them all correctly.
Your channel is becoming a new favorite of mine
Amazingly well done on the borderless states challenge! It took me like 7 tries to get it, mostly due to orders like "Missouri, Nebraska, West Virginia" and me clicking 2 pixels over on the wrong side of a border.

Your pronunciation of some of those is a bit off lol. Great video tho
Finn Interesting how he said Oregon
Randy Tortilla Lmao yeah, I hear "A raygun" also New Jersey lol. I've never heard anyone say it like that

He purposely does a lot of that. It gets some funny reactions.
New Jersey sounded like someone who lives in New Jersey.
God damn Tom I'm impressed! I love the videos and I love your knowledge for geography. I'm an American and it took me 2 tries... lol. The first time I clicked on South Carolina instead of Georgia which I think is tolerable because I was close. The second try I got 100% with 3 minutes 11 seconds remaining.
I live in Oklahoma and a tip for remembering the states nearby is that oklahoma is the only us state to border 6 other states: Texas, New Mexico, Colorado, Kansas, Missouri, and Arkansas. Great video!
14:00 it's actually flat all along the country because the Missouri compromise, where they made Missouri a slave state but made it law that no more states above N30 degrees could be slave states. Knowing Better made a good video on it: "slavery's scar on the United States".
That is not why it is flat, it was already that way before

TheSuomi States basically are countries. We just are united under a central government in the form of the federal govt. That's the reason the states and the federal both have laws and rights.

It's alright, It is good to see how civilised all these comments are from people with different countries. Everyone is always calling everyone else stupid and it makes me happy to see that people are putting their differences aside for something as simple (well, kinda hard if you don't look at the map every day) as a geography quiz.
When European states are the size of US counties, and US states are the size of European countries, then yes, they're the same thing.
