6 Insanely cheap electric cars from China

China are making by far the most affordable electric cars in the world, and many Western companies have opened manufacturing plants in the country.
So why can't the Western world have cheap electric cars? Rich takes a look at what's on offer in the Chinese market, and whether these offerings could reach the UK or the US.
If you are in the market for your own electric bike or scooter, then check out www.Electroheads.com

    • Cars like the C1, 107 and Aygo are desperately needed, but they were axed. Toyota cynically thinks that consumers are willing to pay +3000 more for less room and larger wheels and an 'X' branding campaign.

  • Best EV video up to date. Thanks.👍👍 We are born in the 1950th and would swap our ICE Smart Cabrio (EV Smarts have less than 120km range) for this Wuling Cabrio for around these prices, even up to €20k. But we fear, that the EU will play the protectionism game for its own car market and slap a huge tax on Chinese cars. On top of that, the Dutch government is lowering the subsidy every year, in 2023 from €3250 to €2750, but only for EV's bought in the first few weeks. For the rest of the 11 month there is no subsidy at all. We hope for the Chinese EV's, that would give the masses a chance to ride an EV to. Otherwise, 90% of the ICE cars will stay on the road for the next 50 years.

    • That is exactly what would happen. And it goes the same way for exports into China. No car can survive tarrifs and regulations unless it's built in China in partnership with a Chinese automaker.

      @toyotaprius79@toyotaprius79 Жыл бұрын

  • China has 10 million Evs, 46% of the global fleet in use as of June 2022. With such a huge market, Chinese car makers have all of the money to invest for renovation. Chinese Evs have a lot of cool features like voice control, AI etc integrated. The worst thing the US government did was trying to block Chinese Evs, that did hurt the US consumers by higher Ev prices without enough competition, when a nice BYD cost only ~10k USD in China.

    @chrismayer3919@chrismayer3919 Жыл бұрын
    • I don't think so. China had a bad reputation for producing products that won't last. My employer bought a washing machine and it only lasted 3 months. I bought an electric fan(made in china) and it only worked for 3 months. Japan could still continue to strive since everyone knows that japan could produce high quality products that could last for quite a while at an acceptable price.

  • It's less about build quality, and more about safety standards. Each year we add more expensive requirements for cars to be road legal. Also, RHD is a thing, and LHD Chinese cars will never come to AU, NZ, UK. Still interesting to see what's possible, but we need to double the price at least to have any hope of seeing them released in RHD.

We half brothers and sisters out here are always captivating by that proper English. Something about it just fascinates the rest of us. We really do love the people of the UK. But getting back to the little Chinese EV's, they really have very limited real world applications the way I see it. No offense please. I think I would want one strictly for inner city driving only. However, it is more tempting to order from a website that is bound by local consumer law. Particularly with regard to warranty and complaints. It's usually easier to deal with complaints with a local dealer, rather than arguing about shipping cost to a different continent in case of complaints.

V8 power, big, heavy, bloated, pompous luxury, etc. China EVs are changing the definition/use of vehicle mobility. While Tesla (Musk) is still catering to "western" appeal. • He’s gonna have to do something to understand that an electric car is built with the aid of fossil fuels it is charged with the aid of fossil fuels or some sort of thing that requires gas and oil so it’s really not saving a darn thing and then when you go with the range that is let’s say it’s 100 miles you’re only supposed to charge to 80% then you’re supposed to take another 20% for variables like windshield wipers lights heat and air forget the radio boom and that that would really suck down your battery so so now you have to cut that in half because not only do you have to get somewhere but you have to get home it becomes ridiculous.

  • You got a solid laugh for the Lance Armstrong comment. :) And yes, the Chinese Smart cars are extremely attractive and I'd be happy to pay European rates for one. The actual Smart car wasn't ever upgraded to modern tech, hence the tiny range, which the Chinese have proved with multiple similar size cars is a function of terrible Mercedes engineering and penny pinching, and not whether or not a car that size has enough room for enough batteries for a much larger range. Mercedes used to be a great engineer, but he died quite some time ago. Their current crop are pretty weak sauce and as much as I love the Smart car (I had a petrol one) it's the form factor I'm loyal too, not the manufacturer. The new incarnation of Smart claims they'll be producing a Smart car sized Smart at some point, which I will definitely be interested in, but since they're not doing anything quickly, I won't be holding out hope that it'll be reasonably priced or retain any of the Smart qualities that built the brand.

    @jonevansauthor@jonevansauthor Жыл бұрын
    • Thanks! Yeah the Smart form factor is good enough for me. I do worry about other road users being in much bigger, more destructive vehicles though.

      @Electroheads@Electroheads Жыл бұрын
    • @@Electroheads Why? Do you know how many times BMW drivers decided I was going too slow and drove straight through my Smart on the M4? Yeah. None. I seriously don't know what people think is going to happen if you drive properly. The risk is crashing. If you are assuming a crash, you should be assuming you'll die, not that the car will protect you. Put it another way, do your knife and axe, so you don't slice into a femoral artery because you don't know how to safely use an axe. Don't buy a rubber axe. There's nothing unsafe about small cars. In fact, the Smart had a great safety rating for the time because of the revolutionary design (to whit, they actually had a modern chassis instead of building new cars on top of 30 year old platforms). Plus if such small cars were readily available at sensible prices (the Smart was overpriced) and without fuel in them, safety would dramatically increase. But seriously don't worry about Range Rovers. Those people, as despicable as they are for owning a 4x4 for no reason, also paid enormous amounts of money for it. They don't want to prang it.

      @jonevansauthor@jonevansauthor Жыл бұрын
    • All that said - obviously if it genuinely scares you that's probably a good bit of evidence that you'd have a crash from sheer nerves. I think electric skateboards look really practical but since I never mastered a normal one as a kid, I'm 96% certain I'd fall off at speed, probably into traffic if they did actually make them legal and I got one. :D I'll stick to trying to master a scooter at some point :D
