MATCHBOX Restoration 5b London Bus 1957
I've done a couple of buses before but thought it was about time that I tackled this one that I have had for a few years now. This small, but not the smallest, Matchbox bus, is a cute as a button! - One thing about this little childs model is that it advertised 'Players' Cigarettes. How unusual does it seem today, that a childs toy would encourage cigarette smoking? - I hope you enjoy this episode as I went the extra mile and have included a 'Kevin the koala' skit and also a short extra end video that shows how I made Kevin's bus driver's hat.

I think that Marty's A.S.S. should get worldwide recognition. We should have wall-to-wall Marty's A.S.S. spread all over the place. Magazines, walls, and even on double-decker bus advertising placards! Hooray for Marty's A.S.S.!
What?
Sunday morning, coffee and Marty's - perfection.
An extra thumbs up for Kevin's hat!!!
Kevin was definitely Puttin' on the Ritz!
It’s never just about the restoration, you always have another story going on. Making Kevin a bus man’s hat… from scratch… dude, you rock!
Yea, Kevins back !
Always a pleasure to watch your makeovers. Thanks for the additional hat making skills. Kevin looks grand in it🇺🇸
you do the most relaxing and comforting videos iv seen on You Tube,
Hi Marty, Very nice makeover of a classic bus. As for your sticker issue, back when I worked for a local trucking company, they used a spray bottle that had a couple teaspoons of liquid soap then the bottle was filled with tap water. I've seen the recommend mixture listed as 5% soap, 95% water, but you might want to experiment with what works best for you. They spray the soap water mixture on the door, allowing them to position the sticker. Once they had the sticker in position, they'd squeegee out the soap water mixture with an old windshield wiper (windscreen wiper? ) allowing the sticker to adhere to the door. Great job Marty on Kevin's hat, I sure hope your wife wasn't looking forward to using that bag on her next trip to the local market? Cheers, Rich S.
Great job on the bus. Love the hat making time laps. Kevin looking dapper there.
Love the frequent uploads. Wonderful makeover .
Nice work on the London Bus, I'm guessing Kevin didn't take any Bus Route Training when he'd got himself the job.
Got love Kevin!!!!
The Axle Separation System gave me a good chuckle. When I replayed the film, I caught the "Toenail Clippings " storage. Marty, you are hilarious! And subtle.😂😂😂😂
I knew you would have had to jump from that moving bus with Kevin at the helm! 😁 KEVIN!!!!!!! Well, at least he's off the baking soda. Nasty habit that.
Therein lies the reason you and your channel are so successful - not only is your principle talent so amazing, you take the time and effort to enhance a video with intriguing effects and photography as well as a bit of humor - and you take your dedication far enough to make the necessary props (to wit Kevin's clever cap) that make those effects worthy of your style. Never could give you enough kudos for you production quality and standards......................
Thank you so much George! - That bought a tear to my eye! - I greatly appreciate your comment, it makes it all worth it, Marty.😀
Great makeover Marty! Appreciate the shout-out, already had some messages 😂. There are more dutchies watching your channel.... Keep up the good work!
Have to say, Kevin's bus definitely was "Puttin on the Ritz." Off-road tires with custom bead locker rims! Kids these days, puttin' rims on everything!
Greetings from Nottingham, UK, home of Players cigarettes.
I had one just like that! Mom made me give up my Hot Wheels, Matchbox and other car collection at somewhere around 16 years old. At least I was able to pick out my recipient! I guess that collection was doomed from the start. Make if she had made me give the collection away, it would not have survived me being in the military and if left at home when I went to the military, Mom would have sold it bearing her garage sale days. You have refurbished quite a few toys that were in that collection. Those videos bring me back to my childhood. Thank you very much for reviving the memories!
great video. as usual Kevin steals the show... great!
He was rocking out, in his own little world. 😅
Axle Separation System.. LOL😂
Always loved the iconic red Double Decker British Buses
Miss the old route masters the desk at the back where the conductor used to stand with pram storage behind them
A two pence fare as a youngster and jump on and off when you wanted. Either sit on the long bench seats downstairs or the back seat upstairs, which always seemed to have more room!
What a treat for a Sunday morning. I get to watch a MMM and have a cup of coffee before our usual breakfast out and shopping. Thanks Marty
nekminit, australia is inundated with deadly netherland spiders :D
Nice Makeover Marty. If you're on a septic system like I am, don't por the caustic soda down the sink/drain as it will kill the bacteria that breaks down the human waste matter. It is best to empty the used caustic soda bath water into a bucket. Clean and rinse the container you used in that bucket to clean it. Pour the water contents in that bucket over any weeds around the yard. I'm now experimenting with a $35 sandblaster kit from supercheap Auto with a homemade sandblasting cabinet. Cheers Michael
Thanks for the info!
These models from the fifties have their own challenges versus your favourite golden years models, but you managed to overcome the hurdles. Of course Kevin is the star with his new driver hat. Brilliant as ever! ❤
I do like these older models. I was seven years old when that bus was made. Memories. Good job on the resto. 😊
Job well done. Entertaining as always and funny with Kevin being Kevin.🙂😀😃😄😂🤣
The ending gave me quite a laugh! Thanks for that.
Great makeover. It's always nice to have Kevin drop in.
Beautiful work as always and that spray booth liner was a veritable cornucopia of headlines!
I was glad to see you paint the interior of both pieces before you assembled it. I thought the other approach would have been a bit hokey, not up to typically 3M standards. Well done.
Thanks for the hat extra. I had just commented to the wife I was impressed you found a busman's hat to fit Kevin for the skit when of course you had made it from scratch. Well done.
Thanks for putting the ritz on this bus, Kevin, and finishing the hat (Soundheim would be proud!) God bless you, Julie and your family. Have fun with your toys!
Marty, any chance you could give us a look at your collection? You must have got a few that didn't need makeover! 🙃
Beautiful restoration Marty ☕👋😎😎🎁🥐
Instant delight. So glad life has eased up to give you time to restore.
KEVIN!!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
27:46 Kevin was pretty cooperative, trying on the hat😆😆
Hi Marty, it was very nice to se you again so soon. And it is also nice to se that Kevin has got a new job. Very good video Marty I really like them.👍👍
Kevin’s days as a freeloader are hopefully at an end.
I was, in fact, eating at the moment...
Marty spray Windex under your stickers and you can move them around until the Windex dries. I put boat numbers on like this.
The end segment was brilliant.
❤ Kevin’s antics. Congrats on the video, love the way you put yourselves in the model!
I love Sundays and restorations with Marty
Saludos buena restauración y me preguntaba por Kevin...pero esta muy bien como chofer de buses jajaja
Great makeover as always!! Fun, informative, and Kevin’s antics!
Brilliant restoration and I totally loved the scenario at the end. Really made me smile seeing you riding in the toy double-decker. Awesome!
Great work, as always. The painting of the front grille was a nice touch. Your bus adventure with Kevin was one of your best bits ever -- you had me laughing out loud the whole time. Really magical and funny.
Gnarliest hand on the internet! Let’s go. Love it
Awesome as per usual. I agree with the other comment using windex. Works well. Try paint removal with oven cleaner as it won't harm the plastic. Super vidiography, love it! All the best from Canada. 😎
The Wallaby came to see the legendary rocking fountain.
Nice restoration, details and paint job 👌 👍
Heyy Marty... nice episode as always... your little clips of 🐨 always keep improving and i enjoy them very much. Keep up the good work and Greetings to You and the Family from Germany!
The greatest cigarette packet design I've ever seen was for a Korean brand called, I kid you not, THIS PLUS. It featured a starry sky, a ship's wheel, a whale, and the motto THE SEA HATES A COWARD. I'm not a fan of smoking or cigarette promotion in general (being a lifelong asthmatic will do that), but I make an exception for a package design as brilliantly weird as that. :)
Nicely done ,that tamiya clear cote worked well ,great job on the hat .
A beautiful Restoration of the London Bus, I also have one. Kevin will hopefully get you to your destination.
Nice to see you gave your hands and nails a little bit of care. And nice work as ever of course !
Beautiful! I was actually thinking you skipped the undercoat, and also that you could put clear on. So you have taught us well. I was hoping to see Kevin in the excavator makeover you did, so this was very satisfying.
Hi Marty, you old Mad Hatter! Great work on the Number 5. It looks very fresh.
Enjoing your video again Marty, quite relaxing to listen and watch your new succelfull job👍👍👍
Excellent makeover. You're my Matchbox refurbish Guru 😊 Put it on the Ritz 😉
Those manly paws should not be afraid of a teeny weeny cobweb😅 So glad you're posting regularly again👍👍
Great to see your new Clip. Great work again. ✌️😎🥁🥁
Great video, Marty! Darn Kevin always letting you down!
Kevin's cap is pretty clever, nice work, Marty!
Very cosy Workplace ❤
Kevin’s new friend
Nice to see you keep your Toe Nail Clipplings Marty, just in case they come in Useful!!...😂😂😂😂
Another great video Marty! Love it when you post while I’m painting, give me such inspiration. Thanks again!
Lovely job Marty. Also, got to say Im impressed by your effort in making Kevin's hat. Lol!
Another top notch restoration! Thanks for sharing 🇨🇦
This man makes miracles
Amazing as always, many thanks! Good to know that you have some toe nail clippings in storage, you'll never know if you need some of them. Why the fuss about the cobweb? Its old, dried out and isn't gonna try to sell you insurance - so it's mostly harmless.😉 Watch me wallabies feed, they're a dangerous breed, mate!
Everyone needs an A.S.S in their lives Also I find oven cleaning liquid works very well for getting paint off plastics without harming them
Frank from Germany
Putting on the Ritz!!!
GREAT WORK, AS ALWAYS !!!!!
Quite enjoyed your video, love it to watch them, makes me relaxed, go on Marty 👍👍👍
always a great day when I see your upload. you are so talented.,
Nice restoration 👍
It took a pretty intricate mold, to die-cast this bus.
Hallo and thanks from 🇿🇦
lovely to catch this video so soon and always happy to see a new video from you!
Nice work love the bus ride Marty👍👍
Try few drops of dishwashing liquid in water. Wipe some of the liquid on the body of the model. Place the self adhesive stiicker in position, and you should be able to move it around. Sqeegee the sticker into position and leave couple of days to dry. This works with vinyl stickers, but I don't know if it would work on paper stickers. Cheers and thanks for the videos. Hesi
It wouldn't work with paper stickers I'm afraid. The glue backing isn't sealing enough, and the paper will get soaked in spots and look terrible.
Great show has ever Marty keep them coming
Once again you did an amazing job.
those small Matchbox models have a chibi look on them. :) I guess at Lesneys' they'd have touched up those knobs, too, and siurely they had a tool to make it easier. imagine a day of pressing these things together... lovely little hat you made for Kevin. :) I think cheap soldiers' uniform hats in 19th century weren't much more elaborate, the prussian troops had hats made of cardboard laquered in black... and of course the lil Koala pulling another Kevin. XD
Awesome restoration Marty😎
When do you open a ‘Marty’s Marvellous Miniature Hats’ KZhead channel? Excellent video as always.
The height of fashion for the discerning Drop Bear! 😅
Hi Marty, I'm a Lego nerd, so have to deal with loads of stickers - the trick is to float them into position. Make up an eggcup or similar of water with just the tiniest amount of dishwashing detergent added to break the surface tension and give it a slight bit of slip - you can feel it when you rub your fingers together when they are wet with the solution. Use a cotton bud (or your finger tip) to dip in the solution and dab on where the sticker is meant to go. I usually give it a bit of a rub to dissolve any surface oils or contamination, just make sure the entire area is wetted.. Then peel the sticker off the backing (I use tweezers), dip the sticker in the solution, and place near enough where you want it - you don't have to be precise. With all that slippery water under the sticker it's easy to nudge it into whatever place you want it. Then use a cotton bud or piece of paper towel to wick away the excess water. Finally, when the water is gone and you're happy with the placement, press the sticker into place. You have to be careful when pressing, because there's still residual solution under the sticker, and you can still move it. If that happens, just use finger pressure to try and nudge it back where you want it. If it all turns to poo, use a hobby knife to lift a corner of the sticker, tweezers to lift it off (it's not firmly stuck for a few hours), and repeat the whole process. It's a bit of a stuff-around, can take a minute or two per sticker, but the payoff is stickers placed exactly where you want them.
Another way to do it would be stick the majority of the sticker in some parchment/ baking paper, get in position and stick down the exposed side. Then peel away the parchment paper and stick the rest down. Vinyl crafters use it, very effective as shows u underneath but you don't have to commit sticking everything down till ur happy. Also saves getting things wet.
At australian customs they would have had a ball if they found that spiders nest🤣
I recall years ago Marty received a stern letter from the Australian government when he washed some foreign soil down the drain when cleaning a model that had been sent to him.
Hi Marty. I have the exact same bus. I enjoyed your makeover and I love the bus ride in the end
I'm thinking they cast the top somewhat splayed out and then put it around the base, jammed it into a vise lined with leather, and pressed the top together to close it around the pins.
Great 👍👍👍👍 restoration, like.
Nice restoration looks awesome.
Great work, Marty! Your poor thumb. ❤
