  • A well-bred merle dog with one copy of the merle gene will be as healthy as a solid-colored dog. If two merles are bred together however then they are llikely to suffer from vision, hearing and skin problems. It's important to purchase from reputable breeders who do all appropriate genetic health testing prior to breeding. Please don't purchase any dog, especially a Merle, from a backyard breeder.

    • The same goes for all poodle and spaniel full and crossbreed here in the uk. All our reputable breeders supply genetic, visual and musculoskeletal tests for your pup. And unless you want something over fancy breedwise, don't go to a pet store or backyard breeder. Go to your local rescue, and get a hienz57 mix mut! Their crossbreedingmeans they will be generally healthier than a pedigree, have great personalities, and able to take the rough housing being a pet in a growing family in its stride. And they make ideal first dogs too.

    • Gidget"ss a great doggo! Do you use her to help train other dogs in appropriate social behavior? Also, why not do all the mat shaving before the bath? Does some of the matted hair untangle with shampoo and conditioner so you don't have to shave as much?

  • I have a 20-lb pom mix, and she loathes being brushed, so I keep her hair cut short. One time, I forgot to specify to only trim her with scissors, and they shaved off all her overcoat. Her overcoat is the traditional red color, and her undercoat is white. So for about a year until her coat grew back in, she had a pure white body with a red head. People said she looked like a fox head put on a polar bear's body 😂

    • You're very lucky her coat grew back in! Spitzs' (Poms, German Spitz, Samoyeds etc) are double coated breeds and shaving their coats typically ruins it forever... that's why Vanessa takes great care to deshed Gidget! I've got a 3 yr old German Spitz Klein and like poms, HATES the brush or any kind of grooming... the exact opposite of what you'd think of a little fluffball, right?

    • @@3orM00Rrecharacters yes I was really afraid it wouldn’t grow back since it took so long! She was still adorable but I really missed the red! And the undercoat isn’t near as soft and silky.

    • Same thing happened to mine. His long coat did not grow back, but he was a rescue and so terrified of the brush... it's probably for the best in the long run. He had a bacterial skin disease and hot spots and black skin. Now he has a red head and a grey body. He looks ridiculous but I adore him.

      @Gloriousturtlechan@Gloriousturtlechan Жыл бұрын
    • @@Gloriousturtlechan As far as I know, there are some rare situations in which merle dogs have a risk of deafness. And knowing that humans are cruel when it comes to money, I am sure that breeders breed merle with merle to have all the profit of selling a 100% merle litter. So I warn about this critical breeds. :(

However, he will also answer to "Butter", "Scotch", "Butter-Butter" (sometimes with any number of additional "butter"s tacked on the end), "Nutter-Butter", "Your Royal Highness" (because cat), "Stupid" (he's kind of derpy), "Sewer Breath" (he is prone to gingivitis), and "Spitnik" (picked up because he will orbit the bed making weird chirping noises when he wants petting).

He would lay on the floor and allow me to pull his mats apart with my fingers because I didn't have clippers or scissors, only a brush and my fingers. He loved being brushed, even when it hurt, he would just lay there and bask in the attention. This was more than 25 years ago and I knew that the mats just couldn't be good for his skin. Thanks to groomers like you on KZhead I believe there are more people that realize the importance of caring for their pets' fur.

  • Thanks for this video! I’ve been a bather for almost two shears and was always taught to brush the tails from the base. After watching this video last night I went to work today and brushed tails starting at the tip working toward the base and the dogs were definitely much more accepting and comfortable! Thank you so much!

  • She's such a doll! I really miss my Pomeranian. My dad brushed him every single morning, it was part of their morning ritual/man time lol. So he never had matted hair and was always so soft and fluffy. He was such a shit though! Miss him everyday.

  • She's beautiful. I have a black and tan Pomeranian. He has a super thick and wonderful coat. I'm lucky that he enjoys his grooming. Although, I can't use a slicker brush on him but a wig brush works wonders.

  • She is so CUUUTE! I hadn't seen a blue Merle Pom before.Such a bitty thing,though I once knew one who might have weighed 3lbs at best,and was so fragile she broke her leg jumping down from a bed.Gidget looks big enough to be able to be an actual dog.A little Teeny dog,but still a dog.Thanks for the tip,we just added a longer-haired rescue dog to the household and he needs to get used to being brushed out.
