I don't mind a little jank if the story and characters are interesting, it could even add the fun, but they just aren't. Seems like they rushed the screenplay, filming and postproduction. The script feels like it needs 3 more drafts to get it right.
Totally agreed. The westernised Netflix one is typically Hollywood style sci-fi trying hard to add feelings but really hollow. The Chinese one offers a far more natural in storytelling trying why professor Ye invited the aliens and the factions within her organisation towards the alien civilisation . Thus the thought provoking effect of this story goes beyond the sci-fi genre inviting watchers to ponder what do you make of the existence of humans on this blue planet. Really hoping that the Chinese continue to make the rest of the trilogy in tv series soon and complete the journey.
I read the first book and let me just say if the Three Body show (Chinese) is like the book, I'm not a fan already. I feel characters building in the book is horrible. Really liked the characters in the show tho!

I just finished the Chinese version, it was pretty good. It’s a build up of emotions and it’s dark. I love how I knew Ye Weinjie so you would not dive in to judge her right away. They got the eerie atmosphere and great CGI. It’s very easy to follow. We are going to watch the Netflix version next
很 Now the Chinese version has released a director's cut version, it is called Anniversary edition, it has been reduced from the original 30 episodes to 26 episodes, I think the rhythm has become more reasonable and compact, I think I can explain why the original Chinese version is so long, because it needs to be broadcast on CCTV. However, CCTV requires that the length and number of episodes of the TV program should be higher than a certain number, and the investment of the current TV version can only support the production of the first one, so some protracted plots are added to this one. However, since the anniversary edition was broadcast on the Internet, almost all unnecessary plots were deleted, and I felt that this version was much more exciting than the original one when I watched it again

I watched both series. And they were excellent! The Chinese version was a bit slow, but methodical in explaining the physics behind the 3 Bodies. It really helped me understand the Netflix version better. I am not acquainted with the books although I have heard about the 3 Body Problem many years ago. I watched the Netflix version first and I would suggest this to anyone planning to watch both of these excellent shows. 👍🏽👍🏽💯

I watched the chinese version last year...I am thinking whether I should watch the netflix version...I have read the comments, it looks like netflix version is also good...but man these shows eat up so much time..
@@nyb_ok I watched the Tencent version last year and watched the Netflix version when it was released this year. Although not entirely trash, I really didnt care for the Netflix version whereas the Tencent version really made me think and made me love going into the science and philosophy and stuff. If you want that, the Netflix version has none of that. It only has the big moments from the story, without any of the suspense or buildup from the Tencent version.
I watched the chinese ver and it made me buy/read a book for the first time in my life, I enjoyed so much. The netflix one I've only watched 3 episodes and i think i'll give another change after I finish the triology and serve it as a summary

I have started watching the tencent version and after 4 episodes, I'm going to stick with it. I like the slow methodical buildup and I'm trying to keep away from too much information that may spoil the suspense. I like the real feel so of 2000's China. My personal biggest gripe with the Chinese series is with the English subtitles. They are very badly paced. They flash up and often disappear again in two seconds before I have had time to focus away from what's happening on the screen to only manage to read half of the text. And then there could be a gap of a couple of seconds before the next text appears. I feel I have to be constantly on edge to instantly read the subtitles or I will miss vital information. I watch quite a lot of subtitled TV and movies and this is the worst paced as far as I'm concerned. I'd be curious if others felt the same? Apart from that, great production so far and I'm excited to see where it leads. By the way, I have avoided looking at or reading any other comparisons between the two series because they all would have had too many spoilers. If you curious, I recommend to G00gIe "Three Body Problem Disembiggened". Fans have shortened the Chinese version into 6 hours of 3 episodes without throwing the core out.
I have the same thoughts about the English subtitles. I'm a fast reader but sometimes I'm missing some of the translation.
@@antm64 Yes, they are badly paced. I don't know how accurate the actual translations are, but I suspect whoever transcribed it for the screen probably wasn't an English speaker and didn't allow enough time between subtitles for the viewer to always be able to read them before they disappeared. My only advice is to stay sharp and be ready for instant speed reading! Enjoy the show. It is very good despite the subtitles.
I agree as well. The subtitles were very quick and not completely accurate to the actual dialog. But not as bad as some other foreign language films.

in the chinese series when ye wenjie is arrested she confesses to 2 murders at the red coast base, 2 superiors, one was her husband. in the chinese series she marries and has a daughter from her chinese husband, in netflix series her daughter is from Evans liked watching both series, the chinses version is definitely better, watched 26 of 30 episodes so far

THE THREE-BODY PROBLEM on netflix was very interesting, there is also a long chinese series, 30 episodes, called THREE-BODY, its in chinese with English subtitles. In the netflix series sometimes those scientist act immature, self centered, selfish, in the chinese series theres only one professor working with a cop, think the chinese series is more informative

i just finished watching Three Body Problem and I didnt know there was a chinese adaptation. I searched for a comparison between the two adaptations and your video definitly made me curious to watch the chinese one now. Even if I wasnt familiar with the books I did find that the netflix adaptation was going too fast and not as in depth as i would have liked, and I ended up liking it more because of the science fiction elements and themes rather than for the drama and characters, that felt rushed and a bit generic. But learning that there is a chinese version, more true to the books, and exploring the story and characters in more depth, and that has great production and CGI, this really made my day and I cant wait to watch it

I watched both versions and was struck by the Cultural Representation differences. IMHO the reason why much of the story was moved to England, was to avoid showing China functioning like a normal country. In this present climate of geopolitical tensions, China is constantly depicted in the Anglosphere as being repressive and dictatorial. To see Chinese policemen and soldiers behaving with humour and humanity would be too much for the Western narrative. Western mind control is slick indeed.
It has nothing to do with how Westerners think about China. It can't be filmed in China since netflix is banned there and the production of episodes will be extremely difficult under constant censorship and watchful eyes from the government.

"Three Body" is the direct translation of the original Chinese title of book 1. When Ken Liu translated it, he added his own interpretations and the word "problem", which I dislike as I believe translation should be as faithful to the original text as possible. It's the same for book 3, with the original title as "God of Death Lives Forever" and was translated as "Death's End", and the meanings are completely different.
The purpose of the title is to sell the book. Publisher's usually change book titles to something that makes sense in the target language rather than rely on literal translations which can sometimes be...problematic.

If you can condense a story and still keep the emotional core when translating a story from book to the screen you have done a good job. No I’m not a 15 year old with a short attention span, the mediums are different and you can show something on screen more easily and with less time than writing in a book. I found the book to be a little long winded, but that might be because translations often take the art from writing. While I was disappointed the Netflix series took place in London instead of China, I enjoyed by the pacing. As the series is complete it also makes sense to blend the timeless that start at the same time into one season. Maybe if I have 30 hours of time free one day I’ll check out the other version.
While I'm not happy with the gender swapping, race swapping, race-and-gender swapping, and overall butchering of the source material, in the Netflix version, I kind of understand why they had to do it. Given the attention span of the average Netflix viewer, they would have zero chance of getting greenlighted for a second season if they were completely faithful to the books.
I think you have watched an abridged version of Three Body because the version i watched was often almost one hour per episode. Maybe around 55 mins and not 40 mins
I was disappointed by the Netflix series because there was no school for young witches who discovered they had super powers and had to fight a secret evil occult order. The Chinese series was much better.

Mr Lui was not out to highlight the cultural revolution, he is just writing as part of the historical context. Condemning it does not make it more international. It would be great if people can appreciate his call for people to come together in face of a global challenge (from the trisolarans). Sci fiction does not seek to discriminate but to bring people together.
I agree, one of the best parts of the series is the whole world coming together, united to face a common threat.

The Netflix adaptation completly erasing the 2000s Chinese setting and only showing the chaotic 1970s Chinese setting seems to erase the book's cultural and socio-political themes of contrasting the chaotic and close minded 1970s China VS the modern and progressive/more open minded 2000s China. Furthermore, the cultural swap of characters like Zhang Beihai from a mainland Chinese character into a British character in the Netflix adaptation is one of the main reasons I am skeptical that Netflix's deviations from the books will work in the long run. Beihai is a very "Chinese" character rooted in China's authoritarian political system and represents very Chinese socio-cultural elements and tropes. His character serves as a political commissar who purges other people for dis-loyalty, but has his own disloyal agenda...which he learned to hide via growing up and playing the political game in China's authoritarian cut throat system (where saying the wrong thing can get you sent off to prison or worse). He is supposed to be an ideological opposite to the Chinese villain of the book where both grew up in a similar authoritarian environment but ended up with opposite beliefs. Apparently, the new show turned him into a British character. At that point, it's not even about race/ethnicity or physical features. It's about how does this change even work within the story, themes, and other context of the book? To change that type of character into a British character who grew up in the UK's liberal representative democracy with a very different cultural, social, and political environment & attitudes that is completely opposite of the character he is supposed to be based on - how does that even work?
Netflix's English adaptation contract with Yoozoo group does not allow Netflix to adapt the book accurately. This is on Yoozoo group who sold Netlfix the adaptation rights. When 2 adaptations are released so close to each other, it's understandable Tencent got the right to adapt it accurately because it is their own China's unique story. They do not want an American company doing the same thing.
Hey there, this is a great analysis and critique of some of the issues regarding taking away the Chinese sociocultural context in the modern segments of the series. I am making a video about certain criticisms of the different versions of the show, and would love to possibly include some analysis inspired by yours if you are ok with that! It is so valid that the system where someone is nurtured in affects their ideology and beliefs, and I am also curious to see how they will make a South Asian-British character channel the motivations that a Chinese character did. In Netflix, the discussion between him and his father at the dinner table gave us some initial insight, since his father is an immigrant who came to a country dominated by another race. Although the historical contexts are definitely different, I think this is a possible interesting perspective - bringing in the child of an immigrant perspective that could possibly influence his subsequent idea of loyalty vs. disloyalty, and the entire human race; I do want to say that, either way, this character is unique, and the way upbringings and ideologies are shaped are also unique - this is by no means a generalization of any groups of the people I mentioned above. I noticed this as well, probably because the US is in the middle of it's own cultural revolution to some degree and Media companies are at the forefront of it. When I started reading the book a few weeks ago, all I could think of is how the Wests obsession with Equity and Critical Theory echoes the 1960 cultural revolution. US media entities are not allowed to critique the outcome fo that philosophy to its logical and historical conclusion.
@@ccmzadv4879 Netflix had no problems portraying the chaos of the Cultural Revolution though. Netflix only erased the 2000s Chinese setting that represented the more optimistic and progressive China, and kept the chaos of the 1970s China. It was China's Tencent version that erased the Cultural Revolution scenes. So if it was due to an agenda of replicating the cultural revolution, then Netflix would've done the exact opposite of what they did here - they would have erased the Cultural Revolution scenes.

The Netflix version is like a summary and cuts all the suspense and buildup, so basically you'll be spoon-fed what's happening in the story. In the Tencent version, you can take time to try and figure out what's happening yourself

I've watched both back to back twice and I love them both, the cop in the Chinese one annoyed me though, he was very confrontational and rude, always shouting etc, plus the Chinese one lacked a lot of warm emotional aspects. No hugging of family or kissing loved ones, very cold, Netflix one made me cry almost with its emotional parts. Both tell the same exact story in a different manner, the Chinese one is like a flower opening to bloom, whereas the Netflix version is like a hard hitting documentary, straight to the point. Watch both and you will agree the story itself is very cool, the only part I disliked in both was the cutting of the ship and killing Evans and crew, that was a tad too far imo. They could have snuck someone onto that boat in the night via a small boat, navy seals are trained to do this exact thing. My fav parts are the stuff about the Sophon's and unfolding of higher dimensions, that stuff had me wide eyed, alert and wanting more.
The sophons are my favorite part in Three Body Problem as well - have you read up to Death's End? That book was absolutely insane, and I'm sure you will love it/loved it if you wanted more about the dimensions :)
Interestingly, the constant emotional moments is what made me dislike the Netflix version. While these moments aren't problematic on their own, they took away time and attention from the crisis of science that was going on around the world, or what's supposed to be an extremely important plot point of the story. In other words, Netflix made scientists suiciding feel like something that was just happening in the background instead of something that actually matters in the story.
I felt the total opposite - I didn't feel very emotional at all with the Netflix version whereas the Tencent version made me cry multiple times. Just because the Chinese version doesn't have hugging or kissing doesn't mean it is a lack of love - it's a cultural thing. The Chinese aren't in your face with their emotions - they're more reserved.
@@MM-qt2pc I found it quite bizarre that as a father he doesn't even ever kiss or hug his daughter or wife in the Chinese version, a simple hug or kiss on the head or cheek is still being reserved, I saw none of that. As a father of a young daughter I find it quite strange to not hug your children.
@@fiddlestickzmuzik This is the way Chinese family members interact with each other, not using too much body language. The care for family members is reflected in every aspect of life, and hugging is not the only way to express love.
I like the Chinese version, except for having to read all of the CCs; English is a huge market and they should have an option for it, especially on shows like this. Since it IS a drawn-out series, it's way too talky and slow so that they can ridiculously pad it for more time, which is obnoxious and done by all streaming show series. But at least it's not full on non-Chinese, I get so tired of that like Dr. Strange's Ancient One being a Swedish woman instead of an ancient, Chinese man...!! Effing 'diversity,' not EVERYONE belongs in EVERYTHING, so knock that crap off!! At least I haven't had any lesbians or gays or any other alphabet people yet, and that's a huge plus! Best of all, there's no Jewish producers that I can see, thank God!!
The Chinese version drove me crazy with a commercial every 8 minutes or so, but I liked it with real Chinese actors.
Watching Tencent Version in early Ep feel like an Indian movie so many effects. I force to watch it cause it close to the books, I hope the netflix adaptation should also use The Shooter & Farmer Hypothesis cause this is the reason why so many scientist killing their self. Unlike the netflix they just saying to the audience that so many scientist taking their life. I believe you need to watch this two series.

The problem with the Netflix version isn't that it's "woke", it's that it is an incoherent retelling of the key moments of the 1st book
I’ve seen both. The Netlflix adaptation is better. Here’s why. The Netflix series is not a perfectly "faithful" adaption in terms of scenes and characters. It changes some of the book characters into new characters and there are some new scenes and added events. BUT, in terms of tone, story, scope, and overall concept it is 100% more faithful to the books. In my opinion it even improves upon the original story by Liu by making the characters that much more relatable and likable. It is also better than the Tencent production in nearly every single way (production value, acting, directing, visual effects, score, cinematography- literally everything) and I have a sneaking suspicion that the so called "fans" of Liu are not giving the Netflix one a chance because of the changes it made rather than going into with an open mind. Or simply because they are reading negative comments by those who have not even watched it. Well I have and I have watched the Tencent version too (hoping that I would get even more out of it as per the consencus online). I didn't at all. The Tencent version feels overbloated, redundant, and just an overall cheaper made version of the same story. People are complaining of losing the Chinese setting, but the Tencent one removes/changes pretty much everything about Ye Wenjies backstory (which is the most important part to keep considering the events of the Red guard is what led her down her path). I think this is just a case of group think and not genuine criticism. The tencent version is absolute junk compared to the Netflix one and it’s really not even close. At least decide for yourselves.

There's like 10 episodes dedicated to Ye Wenjie's past and motivation for her decision. Netflix just lazily drops the "humanity is incapable of dealing with its own problems" explanation and we're supposed to immediately understand everything. The Netflix version tries to condense the plot of the 1st book into just its key moments, but everything between those moments is filled with junk like characters being edgy, relationship drama, and Augustine throwing another tantrum. If that's what the American audience likes, I fear that in about ten years you'll be writing raving reviews for "Ow My Balls!"
@@ih8people 1) Characters being "edgy" isn't a valid criticism and frankly makes you lose a lot of credibility because you can't actually vocalize your issue without relegating to obscure nonsense. Makes it seem like you are not reviewing the show in good faith. I'm not sure whether you are or not, but keep that in mind. 2) Relationship drama and Augustine throwing a tantrum are 10x more character development than anyone in the Tencent series (or frankly the book) even gets. The 3 body problem (novel) might be one of the most impressive books I have ever read in terms of its ability to introduce brilliant science and philosophical arguments. However, it is one of the most poorly written, dry, and lifeless books when it comes to creating an actual livable narrative and world. I genuinely believe the entire Rememberance of the Earth's past would be better to consume as a wiki rather than a series of novels. So the fact that someone was able to take a frankly unadaptable story and actually populate it with likable and realistic characters is amazing to me. 3) More detail does not always equal better. We've all seen movies that drag on and could use a good edit- that's because the way and progression in which important events are presented incredibly important in creating something captivating. I don't know anyone who would actually prefer the Tencent version over the Netflix one- if they haven't read the books. Reminds me of how Tolkein hardcore fans hated Fellowship of the Ring because it made too many changes from the book- and then it won like 50 oscars and is one of the most revered movies of all time. That movie would have to be 2 times longer to actually fit every scene from the book and would undoubtedly be worse off for it. Like I said, the Tencent version is definitely a more faithful adaption, but definitely not a better overall product in terms of entertainment. Oh and those 10 episodes of Ye Wenijes past were grossly misrepresented because of communist China's inability to allow a shred of self criticism. That is a gross contamination of what is one of the core elements of the story and frankly inexcusable. Also you did not need to spend 10 episodes for that. it was completely unnecessary and illustrates one of the biggest problems with the show- it dragged and dragged and dragged.

I had to adjust too. We watched the Tencent series with my wife who watches a lot of Korean series, and she told me it's the same there. I figured it's just a cultural thing in those countries, same as those weird last minutes of every Tencent episode where characters just stare at each other and then it cuts to a slideshow with some music on the background. That said, I liked the CCP-approved version much-much more despite the weirdness. It feels like a coherent story, unlike the stuff Netflix produced
Don't bother watching the Chinese series! You'd think the Chinese govt would want to trumpet the success and love for the source material but they're too busy living a lie in real time to acknowledge their past atrocities. Move on CCP! We all come from a place that fucked Up in the past! Look at the US, UK, Germany and Japan! It's okay, your people will appreciate the maturity required to let them talk about it! You don't actually have to do anything... Just let people speak! Your people are intelligent and thoughtful! They'll work it out!
the book stole a lot of ideas and plots from other western sci fi, as a sci fi fan it's hard to give credit for the author since it is good but it is also a good copy and paste story.
Not sure what you’re talking about - what are your sources for this? Just because there are existing science concepts doesn’t mean it’s stolen lol, the generic concepts of aliens or physics are not patented IP. Just because something from the east is interesting and creative, doesn’t mean it’s copying from the west. Whatever you’re implying is disrespectful - to the author, to the sci-fi community, and to non-western creatives.
