Why is it that geography class never seemed to cover where any of the countries were actually located? I always wished they had because I wanted to learn about that instead of rocks and stuff. Now of course, being the ever-curious young scholar I was and still am, I took it upon myself as a young buck to learn about where all the countries in the world are. But after a while, the passion faded, and I began focusing my geographical study time on other endeavours such as polo and consensual lady-touching. Turns out I was great at both! Anyway, the passion for geographical study returned 2 weeks ago so here's a video that isn't about rocks and stuff.

I know this is a joke, but this is how Europeans imagine how Americans see the rest of the world.
It's mainly because of SNL. It's a show made for entertainment so of course they are gonna only show people who get it wrong
@@vinukabest3 Not only that. I've spoken to many people from the States online. It's rediculous what comes out of their mouths sometimes. I do understand why however. Why know where every other country in the world is located on the map if you're never going to need it? Depending on occupation this can change if I ask American people the same question for obvious reasons so it is just a stereotype. Also has allot to do with history I guess, but I'd have to sit here and write for a bit too long. It's not like all Europeans know where every country in the world is located on the map out of the top of their heads either. I know the countries in Europe very well obviously but Africa is a different Story. It's still fresh in my head now as last year was when we learned in history class and in geography class about wars, colonies and locations of the country, mountains and cities of African countries but ask me about them in a few years and I'd probably have to think for a while. The stereotype is mostly used in jokes however, which is nice. All countries have their stereotypes that get joked about. I'm from Belgium myself so you can probably think of a few there.
Tbh this is too much information for an average American to handle
Asking US folks for European countrys is like asking Europeans for US states. We'd fuck that up too. I can maybe from the top of my head show the location of 10 US states on a good day.

Actually, Russia is partly in Asia. Up until the ural mountain range its Europe.
Russia is its own thing. Together, the Slavic regions, Europe, and Asia, form Eurasia. To clarify: no part of Russia is in Asia. There is a huge geographical and cultural divide, and it’s just incorrect to say that Russian people are Asian. Mongolia is up for debate, but Russia is firmly recognised separately from Asia and Europe.
@@jaguar_8344 yeah no.. it isn't.. Russia is transcontinental, just like Turkey and Egypt in geographical terms. In political terms, Asia is a fuck ton of vastly different cultures. To say Russian people in Siberia are non Asian just because they're different is like saying the Arabs aren't Asian just because they're different. Asia is different in many ways so you can't really say they're not Asian because you're not specifying which kind of Asian. And what do you mean by "the slavic regions?", the slavic regions are in Europe, Siberia is certainly not majority slavic so you can't disprove there. And "mongolia is up for debate?" what..? Up for debate for what..? Being European or Asian? If that's the case then never have I ever heard the most stupid debate ever. Mongolia is and always has been Asian lol, they're ethnically east Asian, descendants from Korea and Manchuria, like all the other Siberians. Mongolia only uses the Cyrillic script because they were a Soviet puppet.
@@jaguar_8344 dumb
@@jaguar_8344 I would say there is less contradistinction between Europe and Asia in Russian mindset compared to western Europeans and Americans. Europe and Asia are seen more like just geographical regions rather than distinct identities or "existential planes". It's true that slavic people of Asia came there from Europe, but there are also lots of people who came from Asia to Europe and most of them came through territory, which is now Russia.
Russia is a multicultural country. Most of Russians are half Asians but they don’t actually consider themselves Asians or white. Russia “counts” as Europe only because Moscow is located in Europe. But no one in Russia actually consider themselves as Europeans or something because our mentality is more Asian actually. Fun fact: Indians and Slavs have the same genetic ancestor

@@MattColbo The hell, what're you guys learning about in school??
@@Pollicina_db I don't think Americans actually learn about Geography as part of their curriculum unless they decide to take it as a degree.
Well, I'm not sure about what the more recent curriculum in Newfoundland and Labrador (Matt's province) is like these days but back when I was in high school, my own province had two mandatory geography courses in high school: one world geography and one Canadian/provincial geography. Neither course put strong emphasis on political geography. It was covered, of course, but a lot of time was spent on physical geography (plate tectonics, biomes, climate zones, etc) along with demographics and other geographic subtopics. Canadian political geography is fairly straightforward and learned in primary school so that class was really heavy into physical geography. World geography involved more political geography but it was basically a survey course and the political geography emphasized the dominant or populous countries (e.g. Argentina and Brazil got more attention than Uruguay and Paraguay) and groups of smaller or less influential neighbouring countries were often covered as a group. Even so, we did lots of physical geography and basic geology. I don't remember being specifically taught US states but most Canadians have a good grasp of them from sheer cultural osmosis. Our world maps often have the subnational divisions of the US and Canada (and sometimes the UK and Australia; the USSR too back when I was young).
@@paranoidrodent I graduated from a high school in NL last year. We used to choose between Canadian history or Canadian geo, and then world history or geo in grade 12. Some people divide America in 3 North, South and Central: South is the same, North is Mexico, USA and Canada, and Central is the other countries.
I've seen mexico also Included in "Central America" in a few maps. I think it makes sense sociologically, since mexico is a lot more similar to El Salvador or Guatemala in terms of people, language and culture than they are to the US and Canada
@@sebastiangudino9377 But this type of regionalization that divides America into North, Central and South takes into account geographical aspects. @@talcantaraa Continents are always subjective. North and South America ARE to different tectonic plates. Australia is indeed the only country on the continent of Australia. The name ‘Australasia’ is sometimes used collectively to refer to Australia, Aotearoa/New Zealand and the various Pacific island groups, but Australia refers exclusively to the landmass and associated islands like Tasmania. Source: I come from Aotearoa.
The island of New Guinea (divided between Papua New Guinea and the Indonesian province of West Papua) is sometimes regarded by ecologists as part of the Australian continent because they form a single bioregion, but not any of the others.
While not false, you're most likely refering to the tectonic plates, however common used continents are a vague definitionless thing that are between cultural and political regions and the actual tectonic plates
