    • In fairness, one of the people who spearheaded change in the laws surrounding mental health treatment was a politician. He's prominently mentioned in this show. Don't make generalising statements; many politicians are there to genuinely try and make things change. It's just shit when a wider system (usually put in place by people with genuine evil aims) prevents them from making that change.

So if someone with was/is suicidal they potentially have the energy and functioning with medication to carry out their plan. It's not that depression meds make suicidal ideation worse.

    • @@vitas4783 you have misguided information. The pharmaceuticals aren't the problem. It is indeed the insurance companies. Reason why most of those doctor's deny insurance is because insurance companies deny claims. So then the Doctor has a bill with no one to pay out. So now the pt. has the bill and who knows how long that will take to get paid back. Every medical issue stems from insurance companies sleazing their way out of claims.

I’m so afraid of starting this journey, but we need to raise awareness about mental health in our South Asian community. If anyone’s reading this folks take it seriously and raise awareness. After few days, I started to realize what a blessing I have. Having a health insurance in Germany pays everything. From physical therapy to mental therapy - everything is covered. Being an South Asian, it was hard to go to counseling for mental health issue. Luckily, I went and the counselor arrange everything for me. Literally, I didn't had to do anything at all except signing some consents and visiting my therapist every week. Getting better day by day and still my therapist won't release me and again pursue my insurance to pay for more sessions. Because here in Germany therapists have a vision - "Don't let your patient leave until you make sure that they will be mentally healthy and never need to come back again." Definitely, I am getting more than I am paying for my insurance. Still the insurance are making profits and rarely deny any claims. I'm wondering what is wrong with American health insurance. Literally I can't find a difference between USA health insurance and South Asian. As a developed country they should be able to provide more support, specially for health. If they can't assure one of the basic needs of human, obviously, they are going on the wrong direction.

I got denied long term disability because I have anxiety 🙃 never even been hospitalized or had to take off work for it, but I still got denied. @Lyn-dl2du@Lyn-dl2du4 жыл бұрын
    • They often have waitlists, are only for short term (roughly 6 sessions), only let you make appointments every 2-4 weeks, so as not to clog the system, make it difficult to switch to a different counselor if you aren't a good match with one, and don't offer necessary in-depth therapies like CBT and DBT. They also do not personalize the care, in my experience, and have trouble even remembering who you are. The best option is finding a non-profit government-sponsored family and individual counselling center which opperates through a sliding scale, or an on campus counselling/therapy service run by masters students to practice their skills through the psychology or medical departments.

Chemical imbalances, which come from the brain directly, and societal, or existential reasons for depression. That’s why fools like you who’re oblivious to the spirituality factor of reliving depression indulge yourself in materialistic superficial things which help you distract yourselves from the basic life questions. No wonder celebrities kill themselves day in and out. No wonder an established country like the USA had 45000 suicides annually even though their living standards literally put them into the ranks of elite if compared to the rest of the world. No wonder from 1999 to 2019 30% increase has been discovered of suicides in USA alone. No wonder the drug intake is prominent in countries like the USA where you’re supposedly living the good life. No wonder celebrities numb themselves with drugs and alcohol constantly to escape from reality, although they have the money, fame, family etc. Imbeciles like you live a miserable life believing a simple pill will fix your depression. I had one who ended up making me feel worse by drudging stuff up every appointment, and a couple years ago when I moved back to Kentucky, one of only two therapists available who was covered ended up being an evangelical ideologue who got his degree from a southern baptist school. Meanwhile, a lot of stuff I need therapy for came from closed-minded Christians. When I lived in Boston, I had the opposite problem: I had a lot of therapists in my network but apparently EVERYONE in Boston had a therapist because it took me a whole year before one freed up.

    • abc philomath Ice Bliss is right- while a lot of universities do offer services, they often are very limited (even if you’re at a place like my alma mater where there’s a top-tier hospital right on campus with a ton of docs doing psych residency there). Wait times for a first appointment may be upwards of a month- even if a student is in crisis. Crisis-focused resources often connect students to law enforcement or non-health professsionals (RAs, deans, etc), which can exacerbate the situation. Higher ed admins also may have policies in place where they keep tabs on ill students- not for their well-being, but to keep liability off the school. Students at places like Yale and UChicago have been kicked out of school and denied the ability to return due to psychiatric emergencies- even when no laws or school policies were broken and after students had completed treatment/were well. Students should always do research on their schools’ policies and be prepared to do some serious self-advocacy (or have someone close to help advocate for them).

  • This sums up my experience for the last four years. Anytime I tried using insurance, there’s been roadblock after roadblock. I now pay out of pocket for a psychiatrist and a psychologist that in total costs me $450. I send the claims for out of pocket deductible but I still get road blocks; most insurances want the claims mailed in or faxed and they’re usually with another company different from your actual insurance. (EX: the insurance I’m on now works with Optum Health and I can upload claims, but it takes still forever to process.) I would love to have an insurance cover my mental health but I gave up on it ever happening. I don’t make that much money so majority of my paycheck goes to student loans, rent, utility bills and mental health. It’s nice that mental health is getting destigmatized little by little, but until real change happens, talking about it is basically a fad.

  • It's 2019. People still don't talk about depression, stress and other mental issues seriously. Boomers be like : " ItS aLl In OnLy In YoUr HeAd " . We need more awareness about it.

    • What irks me more is that some people will just have a bad day and label it depression or use it as an excuse for their bad behavior.. which is why people don't really believe those who actually need help, those who are suffering.. 😶 Depressed people never talk about suicide openly they're hurting & hiding but lack of sense in some people just desensitizes the word.

    • We need more awareness, but we also need less negative repercussions if you admit you've had mental health problems in the past. People wouldn't say: "He broke his leg once, he's unfit for this work", but they say: "He was depressed/had burnout once, he's unfit for this."

  • I wonder how many kids can't talk to their parents about this. I tried telling my mom I have recurring depression and anxiety, for which I've been to a psychiatrist and had as much therapy as I could get for free (major props to my uni for offering halfway decent services). Apparently it's a miracle I even got it without waiting months.

Almost no one stayed longer than a week, some less than that. Can't help to think its all because the insurance companies didn't care if people relapsed or committed suicide.
