The battle for the best smartphone of 2021 is on its way, but this particular rivalry is about as old as comparisons themselves. For a better part of a decade, the quest for the best smartphone has mostly lied on these two lineups. On one corner we have the iPhone 13 Pro Max, Apple's larger vision for what Pros want in a phone, and on the other we have the Galaxy S21 Ultra, one of Samsung's best smartphones if what you value is the iPhone's selling point.
Yes, notice that this is Apple's best, but not necessarily against Samsung's best. Cupertino is still relying on tradition while Samsung is on its second generation of Ultra, and third generation of foldable. I'm not saying that's an indication of what the winner will be, but I wouldn't blame you if you consider this face-off to already be kind of unfair. I'm Jaime Rivera with Pocketnow and let's dive in, sponsored by SUPCASE. Stick around to learn about the best way to protect either of these investments

  • One reason I do not rate many tech magazines online or otherwise is that they fail to recognise the fact that large screens totally dominate the smartphone market, yet the software element that is needed to make these larger screen phones great is optimization for that larger screen. I have been saying this for many years, yet it is rarely mentioned. When Samsung introduced ONE UI it was a big step forward that no other phone OEM has come close to matching. You making the point here (I know it is not the first time) is a breath of fresh air. It is all well and good getting software updates for 5 years or more, but what's the use if they are only introducing features and functionality that was around 5 years go or does not cater for the modern form factor.

    • Well I am not sure just few people with your opinion define the ground. The Galaxy S21 series has been the worst selling Galaxy S ever, with only 13.5 million worldwide sales in its first six months compared to 100 million iPhone 12's in seven months! So if what you say was important or relevant then these figures would reflect that? The truth is most of us buy a larger phone for a full-scree bigger panel, not for gimmicks like split-screen (rarely use that on my Tab S7+). To me, since OneUI came along with its bloat, Samsung sales have bombed, changing a winning formula has led to flops (s20 and S21).

  • A note on software updates on Android.... there are actually several levels of updates. The Android version is one level, and not a very significant one at that. Then there's security updates, but while Samsung promises 4 years of those, a lot of security updates also come through directly via Google's Play services. And those are supported for a very, very long time. Going all the way back to supporting ancient Android versions. So even very old phones are still relatively safe against exploits. And then there are the app updates themselves. While Apple has this idiotic construction where you have to receive an entire OS update when the browser, mail client or calendar app needs to be updated, on Android all these apps are updated seperately from the OS. And again, they (the apps) receive software updates for years and years. So the situation on Android is not as bad as everyone always makes it seem.

  • I own both S21 Ultra and iPhone 13 pro (not a max one). The camera and built quality are indeed better in the iPhone. But the rest, i.e. screen color reproduction and quality, image resolution and refresh rate, animation, speaker quality, user interface, Android style notifications, I find that S21 Ultra is still superior. The UI in Samsung is somehow more superior and has more "professional" look that I like. Most Google apps such as KZhead, Gmail, Maps and even Non-Google Apps such as Spotify and Instagram, have better user interface experience. Why?? Because single Samsung screen contains more packed and denser text and information which requires much less scrolling than iOS version. Even when you do need scrolling, Samsung handles them much better than iPHone. The animation in My Samsung is also snappier than my iPhone. And not to mention Face ID??? During pandemic??? Wow, what a useless biometric. Even Face ID does not really work as good as Underscreen Fingerprint sensor on Samsung. More often than not, it fails to recognised my face.

I'm a firm believer in if it ain't broke, don't fix it so with that being said I still own my S10+ 1TB (not including the SD slot that can hold an additional 512GB of storage) that I knew would last me at least 3-4 years before I decide to upgrade. Camera and 4k video is still great, still last me throughout the day with no problem, it's the last S phone with a headphone jack that I still use and the screen is still as beautiful as any phone out now. Since 5G at that time was just surfacing, I figured everything this phone had to offer would last me years til I get my next phone. Although I would love to get the S22 ultra or S23 ultra, I'm also keeping my eye out for the Z Fold 4 to see what it has to offer when it appears but for now I will keep my S10+ with 700GB of space left and continue to enjoy the last year of a major Android update (12) and One UI 4.0 when it comes to this nearly 3 year old phone. I'm pretty sure I would never switch to IPhone as I personally think I will get bored quick, I like to customize and change up my phone often and discover new things down the road I didn't know my phone could do. Thats keeps everything fresh for me. And last thing is I personally love the android side while everyone else around me is into the IOS experience. I'm naturally different, so when I see too many people doing the same things which is not necessarily a bad thing, I just like being on the opposite end, but I can definitely appreciate the benefits each side has to offer. I haven't had any bad experiences on Android so I will stick to what I know!

    • While I agree with you that removing either was "unnecessary" the last time I plugged a pair of earphones into my phone was on the S7 Edge. One day I was using the LG V50, it struck me that the entire time I'd owned it (2 years at the time) I'd never once used its audio DAC. Last month I sold my trusty S10 and while I prepared it for shipping I realised it had had a jack at the bottom the whole time. I had to clean out pocket lint from it Lol Memory expansion? I haven't put a memory card in a phone since the Note 3 Samsung and all other mobile OEMs have access to anecdotal data such as my own use scenario and on a massive scale. They KNOW that the audio jack and memory expansion are not in any way a thing that people really care about on a phone. Samsung especially being the world's leading retailer of expandable storage cards they actually MAKE money from more phones having the option. The fact that both were dropped now even from mid rangers should tell you something

Final is now being rolled out only in various regions. The Note20 Ultra, not an ancient device by any means, is getting it (Beta) in various regions. In Canada, we're getting it in a few months (February, I believe). This doesn't happen with Apple and, to the best of my knowledge with Google's Pixel. Also, try buying a beefy Galaxy Book Pro in Canada. You can't find it with more than 8G Ram and 256 SSD. • I have been a Samsung user since s2 till s20+ being the last one, just recently bought the iPhone 13 pro max. I do realized a lot of flaws in the iPhone. It's isn't as good as iPhone enthusiasts hyped it to be. I would say video recordings is the only thing that the iPhone dominates. In terms of speeds and performances, I would say they are pretty much the same, the numbers in the benchmark test doesn't really matters, as the iPhone significantly outpowered all high end android devices but the ability to fully utilized it is not there, it's a device with a lot of limitations in terms what it can do if to compare with android devices but if you were were compare iphone with iPhone, the 11/12 and the 13 didn't really have a significant enough of differences, features or function to even have the need to upgrade and moving from high end Samsung flagship to iPhone really didn't hyped me up like ppl would buying a new phone. All the new features in the 13 are basically photography like cinematic mode where average ppl really don't even need, all ppl around me rarely even take videos let's not cinematic videos but on the other hand ppl uses their phone to do work related stuffs also relating to me so I prefer my phone to be more productive where I can work in situations where my laptop is not available whereas the Samsung device totally rock in this area. There are a lot of features that the iPhone do not have which I ended needing to keep the s20+ with me on a day to day basis. There are no features on the iPhone 13 pro max that made it significant enough to make me think it's a better device. I gave the iPhone a chance because I have been skeptical about it for a long time. I would say both devices is capable but in terms of which one really ease up your daily tasks would be the Samsung. The only problem that pissed me off with Samsung devices is they heat up easily when running really hardware stressed processes. In terms of design and quality, both stand out pretty good. If I were to be able to choose again, I should have sticked with android.

So if I do upgrade to a s22 series it'll most likely be the s22+. As for Apple devices I never like their phone screens or their os to begin with. The issue with owning any android phone in the U.S is that 70 percent of people here own iPhones. If you’re like me and you like to send videos, hi res pictures to friends, and run social media accounts, then then android ran devices aren’t your friend. Then couple that with the fact that when you start searching from products to compliment your mobile device, you come to realize that apple is head and shoulders above in tablets and smart watches. Then when we can go even further with device longevity… which apple has dominated for years. The truth is that the things that Apple does better are a pretty big deal and are real reasons why someone may or may not choose a device.

From the accessibility standpoint, it would be easier to swipe from the side instead of having to swipe up and hold, and when making notes, actually being able to highlight typed text as well as written text, like it’s an actual highlighter, would be helpful. Saying that, the iPhone still works better for me as someone who is physically disabled, although the Galaxy does have some good features.

  • Does anyone consider any iPhone to be suitable for one handed operation? I have a small iPhone for work and a much larger Android for my personal phone. The OS navigation conventions make it possible to use the Android one handed most of the time, the much smaller iPhone though uses a 3-point navigation model that pretty much precludes one handed operation. Rather than having the navigation at the bottom like Android the iPhone (which still has a home button) breaks this navigation up between the home button, a back button in the upper left of some apps or a cancel in the upper right of others makes it difficult to use one handed. My iPhone is the daily driver simply because it's more reliable and stable. iOS doesn't have maddening inconsistencies or software issues like my note does (My Note fingerprint scanner randomly decides to not work, the audio has bugged out and only come out of the earpiece at times, when I restart my Note Samsung pay immediately crashes and tells me to send error logs to Samsung, when connecting my galaxy buds to my Note there's almost 1s of audio latency, whereas Airpods to iPhone has less than 0.2seconds latency, etc) And in iOS, apps are just better written with fewer UI bugs and glitches. Apps crash less in iOS. For me, boring is a good thing. My time is too valuable to spend hours every day "customizing" or whatever nonsense android users keep drooling over. I will give credit where it's due though, Samsung has nailed the S pen experience, and its a shame the iPhone doesn't support Apple pencils. The ecosystem for apple is better in a view of “wholeness”. HomeKit together with HomeBridge gives you one of the best experiences for home controlling. The services apple provides are also better integrated than other services ever could be - iCloud, AirDrop, Apple Watch and Fitness+. If you just watch to the phones itself, the iPhone could be better in some aspects (software adjustments, more customisation).
