In the remote mountains of Nepal, a shortage of healthcare means childbirth can be particularly fraught.
For some women who experience complications, an emergency helicopter service is their only hope.
The rugged terrain makes it a dangerous mission for all those involved, but it can be crucial in saving the lives of mothers and their newborns.
101 East meets the women risking their lives to become mothers and those trying to save them.

5th child by 25 and Gauriya’s husband seems like he is in his mid 50s . Walking 4 hours while 9 months pregnant ! I feel so bad for her. She looks like she has aged due to the stress. She looks like 35
I just said the same thing. That man looks every bit of 55. Im scared to know how old her first child is. The way he was giving orders; no compassion, no nothing. Then he was sitting there smoking his pipe while she was climbing a tree! You're right, all the demanding physical labor, and birth after birth has aged her so much; he needs to stay off her. I'm ranting, but her story makes sad, but also angry.
Likely arranged marriage
She looks way older than 35😑
Yes. I am always interested in what age they first marry and have first children. Father has grey hair so quite a big age gap.
Kkpk0kkkkkkkkkp
Imagine a world where all of our mothers were well cared-for.
They are in many countries but neglected & abused in others.
Imagine that
And,please help them not to get pregnant so early and so often! If they had a choice I believe they wouldn't want to have kids at a young age or have so many children.
This video gives me a reality check of how privilege my life is and how small my problem is . Hats off to the health officials, pilots ,amazing husbands and to the women themselves for going through all the hardships and not losing the strength (THIS IS WHAT MAKES A MOTHER ).
same here
Why should people put themselves through this , the government should be provide contraception!!
@Shirley Howley Exactly how I feel. Give them free birth control and if that dont happen, the women need to keep legs closed and stop having baby after baby after baby. They know where babies come from n how they get pregnant. I feel bad for the children,I dont feel bad for those women who keep getting preg
@@cherokeeheartct8633 totally agreed. I too feel sorry for the poor babies who are born into a life of misery because of two selfish adults

4 hour hike, up a mountain, in flip flops…9 months pregnant. These women are the real super heroes.
The father with two small daughters definitely needs help after losing their mother. Please Nepal, neighbors or anyone who’re there, please help them. Those little girls didn’t do anything bad.
I'm sure the neighbors are helping with the children as he is the bread winner and has to make money to care for them. I know it's hard for him for I'm their culture the women maintain the children majority of the time. He can do it, he just has to work a bit harder but it is worth it. He has two beautiful little girls depending on him 🙏🏾💕
Я заплакала (((
In support from India
Не переживайте за него. Он быстро снова женится, так не будет жить.
I did feel sorry for him and it did remind me of us with a baby and child that age trying to get them asleep, same all the world over in a way - trying to get small children so sleep.
This is utterly heartbreaking. I'm currently 32 weeks pregnant and walking short distances even though I'm in very good maternal health leaves me winded, my hips ache and my pelvis feels like it's about to give way. I can't imagine an 8hr walk. Given the kind of person I am, faced with this sort of hardship to just have babies, I would stop at 1 or none. My first pregnancy was hard and it took 10 yrs for me to build up courage to do it again(current pregnancy) and this will be my last. I hope their gov gives out birth control information and resources too. You can't let women just suffer and die like this. They barely have food to eat, how are they feeding several mouths?
Good luck with your baby. 8 hour walking on the video was a long way at such a late stage. I did cycle at 40 weeks pregnant in labour in London on my way back from work by the way. Exercise isn't always bad for you in pregnancy for those who are fit. Not everyone is the same of course.
I hope everything worked out for you!
@janesmith9024 thank you 😊
@@GOGOSLIFE it did. Thank you! I had the baby in May.
@@joylastname3035 Wonderful! Congrats! I hope you're happy and healthy and so is the little one!
*KZhead just recommended this video and I just clicked on to know what it is. But the documentary was telling a story which made me desperate to watch till the end. This is the still reality in most of the villages. Hard to believe but this is what it is.*
Its also important to educate them on contraceptive measures so that women who are suffering with the workload of housework and multiple kids can choose their own health over their families wanting more children. I hope they get good health care soon.
often times contraceptives are illegal for women bc procreation is "too important" in heavily religious countries even if those women & their other living children suffer
They cant afford food how will they afford contraceptive
the biggest enemy of these women is tradition and religion. The women and children are dying like it is in such communities since centuries. The lack of education, health care and contraceptives ... no one who tell them that the husbands in fact kill their wives. its devastating to see this in so many cultures.
@@happyme7513another reason why they should be free
How will they have someone to care for them when they become aged if they don't have several children. Some will leave home for work, some will leave to study, some will go to where their husband's family lives. There must be enough children so there is someone left to care for them.
It’s fascinating how Gloria is just 25 but has had 5 children already! But I’m glad she has decided not to bear anymore children as she barely even have enough food for herself. God bless and provide for them 🙏🏾
I hope she can get birth control
You are a little naiv. It's very clear that if her husband wants it, it will happen.
Single-Dad is trying so hard! His scenes with his baby where he's oiling them to keep their skin healthy, are so beautiful. Goria is badass, climbing trees while heavily pregnant and making multi hour hikes in the mountains. We underestimate how much basic modern conveniences helps us, even just to avoid these situations altogether. A blood transfusion could have saved Jaula, and birth control could have helped Goria and her husband, who already have four children and who knew ahead of time that her last pregnancy was dangerous. Kudos to Nepal for at least building health centers.
Mother’s are real warriors❣️.. she is pregnant but still do work, walk miles..In that critical situation…❣️ And big salute for our nepali army..❣️ Nepal army are the pride of our nation
So inspirational to see all the hard work she maintained even while being in fill labor! This really made me appreciate life that much more 🥺🙏🏾💕
Oh, come on! The mothers are forced to be warriors! They were not given a choice! Child after child, and endless hard labor...
@@sleepybunny2and that hard work is probably what caused these complicated near-death pregnancies
I’m so sorry for your loss. This can happen even in the hospital. You did not fail your wife, you obviously loved her. I’m praying for you and your beautiful children

God I wasn't aware of this problem in our country . there is so much difference between rural village life and city life
9 months pregnant and she does a 8 hour walk over the mountains, i will never complain again
Sobhan-allah, when i gave birth to my third son , my body felt pain beyond barrier, i saw two angels, felt peace just to die, then at that moment i was given help , me and my son survived . I am forever grateful.
Suddenly my own life feels very easy. This was so educating.
Thank god I can feel that pain of mothers I was also born in the mountain area at home, not in the health Center this is what it is mother's love for her child. Respect all the mothers bottom of my heart.
Repect is merely enough. Men need to help with every house hold chore there is , take extra care during pregnancy and after delivery
@@mountain85 right,
@@mountain85 be quiet. Women have been doing that and slaving to men for decades. That is the least they could do. Complaining of a little household chores. Jesus. Men call women weak but sometimes I think men are the weak ones. I can't believe you had the audacity to say that. Men have it so easy.
рожать ребенка дома без надлежащей помощи врачей , это по-вашему mother's love for her child?
Its was hard watching whole episode! Our country is still lacking behind in many facilities like there is no proper road , transportation, basic facilities etc. kudos to all the man and women who supported her , her husband and she herself. You all are brave. Government really needs to focus in this part of country. Its shameful if we say we dont have facilities living in Kathmandu after comparing with them 💔our problems are so tiny compared to them ☹️ Such a good documentary.
Thank you Al Jazeera for reaching such part of our country and uncovering the pain and suffering that people are coping hardly. It hurts!!
I'm one of the very fortunate women in the world. I live in Sweden and I have given birth to four healthy boys. Without the Swedish health care system it wouldn't have happened. It's beyond tragical to watch this and see these poor women suffer sooo badly. Working, carrying children, basically taking care of the entire household while 9 months pregnant. Horrific😱. A huge eye opener to how different our lives are😢.
Excellent video. Thanks for sharing. I feel so bad for these women and families and the hardships they face. God bless those who help them in any way.
Not to be mean or cold hearted, but if women are having that much trouble and serious health risk because of being pregnant or giving birth then government should be encouraging contraception..
This is so hard to watch. Education is key - they need to be taught about the importance of contraception and reduce the amount of children these very young women are having. These female babies are guaranteed to repeat the cycle if they aren’t educated.
I felt so sorry for the first lady her 5th pregnancy she so young then she still has to do what the old lazy man gives like cleaning house ect😢
Thanks to all who are involved in this life saving service!!!
It's a lovely documentary n kudos n shout to the MOTHERS, pilots, villagers ,health workers ,etc n of course a vote of thanks to the documentary team.
Respect to all the mother......thanks for exploring the darkside of the remote area of Nepal
I m a nepalese living in city area seeing this all i found my problems so smalll n i feel so helpless n emotional for these women... may god bless these moms n those little angels
Many women die in need of treatment and maternity care in Nepal. I read a heart wrenching story of many women in rural areas of Nepal where women are forced to give birth in animal shed and forest. Due to lack of nutritious food and maternity care many struggle for their survival. They are driven away from human settlements as people consider childbearing "impure". How can a taboo that considers childbearing "impure" still exist in todays world? High time to put an end to this taboo!
Child bearing impure 🤔🤔🤔 I heard first time I m from india 🇮🇳 your neighbour country. Is it true in Nepal pregnant ladies treat as impure 🤔🤔🤔
I was so glad that she was able to have her baby safely I was praying for her.
pray for contraceptives, pray for education also
seeing what these women have to go through really breaks my heart...more power to them for keeping up with the patriarchal society of Nepal 💗
Although it’s tough but also equally happy to see supportive husband ..
I have 4 kids, ages 24, 24, 21 and 19, God is great they were delivered safely, natural birth. I thank God that here in the Philippines midwives go to remote villages...
Sudden pop-up in recommendation, and i didn't regret watching it. I can feel their pain
It is heart breaking but the government needs to step in to provide birth controls .
And education on how to use it
Poor girl is only 25 years old with five kids, and her husband looks every bit of 55. I don't even want to think about how old her first child is. All of the demanding physical labor and birth after birth has age her so much. After she had the baby she looked so out of it. That old man needs to stay off her because she needs a break!
Heart wrenching 💔, salute to all the mothers there and also to the pilot for his timely arrival🙏
Where is the fathers like she’s doing everything 😢🙏🏾❤️
This literally gave me a goose bump and I’m crying watching this 😥😢😰
Salute to these strong women🙏
My heart goes out to these women!! But please, the men could really help using birth control!! Especially when it’s the difference between life or death, and orphaned children.
Why is he telling her what to do while he smokes his pipe! You make the flour pipe man! Let her rest!

I don’t like the husband who was telling her wife to do the cleaning and washing baby clothes… and I could se that the woman was so in pain even if she was trying to show it 😢
Thank you for this making video ..❤️❤️
Thank you for getting into light 🙏
You have the best stuff on your channel! Thank you!
It shows we have to do alot more in our country. We are still lacking the basic facilities in remote areas. Thanks for the reporting team for this effort to make us aware about the condition of women of our own country....
We highly blame our government for such things. In name of development they only focus on urban areas where as rural areas are even can't get thier basic needs.
God bless them!!! I know how much hard and struggling life they are living in such a rural part of Nepal. Government should do look and make better facilities for the rural part of nepal
Great documentary with reality...
Lots of love and respect for Nepal army 🙏
And a good scheme to reward them with $30 of clothes if they use the health centre (assuming move in late labour like that is safer than staying where you are. it is probably safer to move to the birth centre not quite so late in the labour.
We belong in city of Nepal even we are blaming about facility but if we able to see this scenario than we are in far better place as comparison to rural area but government should have to be active there for completion their basic need. Thank you AI Jazeera English for your remarkable Documentary🙏.
Thanks for sharing❤️❤️❤️
Literally, I m crying while watching this documentary 😭😭 😭
Are contraceptives an option and available 😢? Childbirth in such rural area with so less really is worrying. Strong women in deed.
The pilot is a real Life hero !!
It's sad that these men can't get a vascetomy, and so they constantly put their wives' lives at risk, and rob their living children of a mother.
They should expand after morning pill and education about how to not get pregnant...
There should be a program to house pregnant women, where they could go before giving birth. A support person could come with her, returning home only after mother and baby are stabilized. They could also have medical personnel who live in villages on hand. That way, the helicopter could be reserved for unforeseen emergencies. Even if you live in a remote area, there’s really no reason for so many women and babies to die in childbirth. The world has the technology and know-how to significantly improve this situation.
Maybe go there during last month. It would be so much better. Probably cost less than an emergency helicopter also. Army could pay for it and use facility for training their nurses.
It's a real situation of nepal I can't stop my tears after watch this video....god bless them....n Tq so much for your video.......Al-Jazeera channel....♥️🇳🇵🇳🇵
That’s why I will always respect and love my mother , I’m scared just by watching this video, it’s really sad 😢.
Great documentary.
All nepalese needs to see this.....people in the city of Nepal will find it hard to believe this stuff.... most of them will have a hard time believing that this situation still exists in 2022.
When I see videos like this and how barbaric it came be is astounding. I gave birth to a son who weighed 12.1 lbs and 21 inches long, I was in labor 39 hours and had him natural. The baby was so wedged where they couldn’t do a c section. I had severe complications and hemorrhaged so badly that they lost me a few times. This was all done in a hospital unlike these women. It’s up to these men to practice birth control.
Wonder Woman ..seriously , I had a Nine pounds Twelve ounces baby and that was hard enough ‼️. So happy all ended well for you eventually , but I can well imagine how rough it was 💐
Finally somebody said it!!! Birth control!!!
@Donnell Okafor Why, it is usually the men who doesn't want to use a condom, there is no reason why a woman should bring danger to her body for that. There is a condom for woman but men normally don't like it, so they should do their job and get a vasectomy then.
But the husband's also need to help them with house chores
@@lilu1655this is always a problem in Desi countries (india, pakistan,Nepal, bangladesh, srilanka) including whole Asia most of the Desi husbands don't help their wives ,Desi men will have another excuse that we are working outside you are all housewives, 😭 like they are all livin in the nutshell many Desi women are also working women these days they would dragging religious, culture thing when you debt about men taking part in household chores idk about western countries
