Table tennis may come across as an easy sport to play. However, to be considered a top table tennis player, consistent training and hard work is required, as well as being able to perform at an international level for a number of years.
Several players have come and gone, but there are only a few that are come into people’s minds when the topic of all-time greats comes into question. In this video, I give you my top 10 best table tennis players of all time who at one point, dominated the sport in their time.
Number 1: Ma Long
Widely regarded as the greatest table-tennis player of all time, Long started his career by becoming the Asian and Junior champion in 2004.
Long impressively holds the record for being the longest reigning No. 1 in table-tennis at 64 months, and has been the captain of the Chinese table-tennis team since 2014. He has won five straight ITTF World tournaments in a row and 28 ITTF World Tour titles, which is another record he holds. Long is also one of the five illustrious players to have completed a career Grand Slam and the only male player in the world to have won every single title in the sport. He also won gold at the World Championships in men's singles in 2015, 2017 and 2019, World Cup: winner in 2012 and 2015, Asian Games winner in 2010, Asian Championships winner in 2009, 2011 and 2013, Asian Cup winner in 2008, 2009, 2011 and 2014, China National Games winner in 2013 and 2017, and two time olympic gold medallist in 2016 and 2020.
The success of Ma Long on an individual level as well as on a team level, make him the most successful player of all-time.

  • Well for MaLong the reason why he has this record is his hunger for a win always in every game, which the Chinese regards as "playing like giving it your all is a sign of respect to the opponent" and also his ability to adjust in every situation on/before and after each match is what his personal coach Qin improve in him. That's why I adore his mentality that much, the Dragon/Dictator/Dominator mentality I'd say. 💪💪💪 I'll definitely miss him if he retires 😭

Even the top 10 guys of this generation can beat Waldner prime . And for Ma Long to stay in top level for such a long in this competitive world is truly remarkable. Just compare the opponent of Waldner's days and Ma Long days, you'll understand it if you know table tennis. The technique, movement, reflexes, consistency, accuracy etc etc are way ahead and better than Waldner's days yet Ma Long never failed to dominate. I don't think Waldner can withstand Ma Long's forehand anyway. The game was slow during those days, now it's totally different.

  • 1. Ma Long - really undebatable at this point: double grand slammer, most men’s world tour titles etc. 2. Jan Ove Waldner - Perhaps the most beautiful table tennis player to watch and absolutely dominant in his era. 3. Zhang Jike - I still don’t think any table tennis player has been better than prime Zhang Jike (2010-2014), 4. Fan Zhedong - Six-time major champion (5 world cups/WTTs, 1 world championship), this one is a no brainier for me. Will likely go down as the greatest when his career is over. 5. Ma Lin - The pen hold God and 5-time major champion, which was the record for a long time. 6. Wang Hao - The most technically sound player on this list in my opinion, but didn’t quite have the physical gifts or mental game that those higher than him did. 7. Liu Guoliang - A step above his doubles partner Kong Linghui, he’s a a more successful player outside of the majors while also being a grand slam champion. 8. Wang Liqin - Three time world champion, the most prestigious major. Also possessed the most dangerous forehand in the history of the game. 9. Kong Linghui - A grand slam champion who is slightly overshadowed by others to win the award. 10. Zhuang Zedong - Three time world champion in a time when it was the only major. Absolutely dominant in his era. Hard pick over the honourable mentions but I had to go with him. Honourable Mentions to Xu Xin, Timo Boll, Vladimir Samsonov, Richard Bergmann, Viktor Barna, Ichiro Ogimura and Toshiaki Tanaka

  • Dude, you list cannot miss Zhuang Zedong, the three time world champion from 1961 to 1965. At the time there were no World Cups, no Olympics, and no Asian Cups, so the world championship is the highest achievement in table tennis. If you argue that the his victories over Lee Furong were fixed, I recognize that point, but you have to make your case in the video as a footnote. In my opinion, he's in the top 10 somewhere as he was still the most dominant player in his time regardless.

  • Table tennis underwent a major change in the 1970's with the "atomic" speed of play and a variety of trick serves. Therefore, Ogimura is woefully out of place in this ranking regardless of his titles. In most sports, the "best of" lists should be segmented into 2-3 time periods for the purpose of objectivity, reflecting the improvements in the sport.

Waldner & his various compatriots teach and share to the Chinese and they copied including the rest of their generation and beyond how shakehand is played. That is how shakehand in China came into existence as main style of play. In case you haven't realise, when u buy a racket at any shop u can order a chinese penhold bcos it is representative of chinese play but there is no chinese shakehand being named bcos it is a European style historically since the game inception in London. Thus it is also not a chinese country ball bcos it is founded in England. Meanwhile, in a broader perspective, the world follow the shakehand style started from Waldner and compatriots. So if Malong and etc are learning and benefiting from Waldner act of kindness. How does it make him great. last but not least, if his fans are not humble enough to recognise the fact, so Malong had did the game a disservice and bring a bad name to the game. So above being said, believe not only debatable but it is abundantly clear who is 1. Not a fan of anyone but stating the correct facts. Wonder what Malong or etc before him have ever done to the global game other than sharing how many cups or double they have got etc etc. Winner dont need brag as it is evident in record and can be avilable via a click. But one thing clear is the first ever person who win the olympic and world champ is not Malong or any of their compatriots. Even the 1st olympic was not as well. Wonder did they elevate the game globally or make it a poorer game in the world ?? Somehow believe inclining to the latter.
